Both Foxx and Magrat are toast, politically.

And, YES, there needs to be a full investigation. The citizens of Chicago need to know how a grand jury indictment for 16 charges just vanishes into thin air.

I do think that Magats was put out there to take the blame for this. We will see if he stays with the DA's office or not. While Foxx claimed to have recused herself, thats not really how it is done. You can't just hand it off to someone who works for you just down the hall. And she apparently was still working with Smollett's family.

She needs to be disbarred immediately for gross ethical misconduct.

I would like to have this thoroughly investigated and all appropriate legal action taken, but as of yet she hasn’t been indicted of a crime.
The complaint to the ABA needs to be filed immediately.

I do agree with this. But they will defer to any other investigation before taking action.

She will never regain the trust of Chicago's citizens when she uses her position unethically. She knew immediately she shouldn't take any call from a defendant's family member, but she did it anyway.

I can't answer that. It does seem odd. However, given the contents of those texts/emails, there was some potent influence going on. I'm sure that the DA just assumed she could slip it all by and it wouldn't be that big of a deal. I'm fairly certain Magat just had this thrown in his lap and may have had little choice. But look at all the collateral damage that behavior like this causes.

Obama's former COS David Axelrod is displeased with how this was handled.

IDK who was behind it, but the whole thing was handled poorly. JMO, Smollett was overcharged (ridiculous that someone was facing 40+ yrs in prison for making up this story. Rapists don't even serve that much time), but the whole thing shouldn't have been erased the way it was. Smollet's life going forward will be unpleasant. He'll have a lot of crazy people following him around, trying to harm or kill him. So, dumb move overall, for how this was handled.

ETA: I'm also not sure this was done to cover up for someone else. There weren't any other people involved besides the two guys who helped stage it. It was handled this way, most likely, because that's how powerful people do things - the way they want with no accountability to the public. Chicago has a lot of this, but this kind of corruption is at every level of government everywhere in the US and is non-partisan.

I respectfully disagree. JS was not overcharged in the least.

Imo he was guilty of all 16 charges, and he knew if it went to trial he would be found guilty, and so did Foxx which is why he was given this unexplainable deal.

What JS did is far far more egregious than doing insider trading or for not paying their taxes.

What he played was a very dangerous game when he specifically targets certain individuals, and one race who hadn't done anything wrong at all.

He sewed more divisiveness across our country, and he did it purposefully, willfully, and intentionally based on nothing but LIES.

His hideous false claim of a hate crime will affect true victims of hate crimes.

He purposefully with great planning said he was violently attacked because he was gay, and black. All a pack of orchestrated lies meant to cause chaos, and unrest.

Lying that his attackers yelled a certain slogan when hoping Trump supporters would be blamed unjustly leaving them vulnerable to be harmed. The truth didnt matter to this wretched little man. He didnt care who may have been hurt by his false claims.

We are all painfully aware of how false narratives like the ones he made, and other false claims can, and has, quickly spiralled out of control causing violence to spill out on our streets.

JS knew this was also a possibility when he scammed the American people by bald face lying to everyone, but narcissist JS didnt give a crap about innocent others who may have suffered.

He is far from someone who shouldn't do prison time. What he did is far worse than many others who are doing prison time right now for committing just one felony, not even 16 like he was charged with, rightfully so.

The presented everything to the grand jury and that is what they returned. That is not uncommon. The DA gets everything charged and then that gives him/her leverage on a deal. Part of why there were so many charges is that JS kept doubling down on his lie. As the case developed, it seems clear to me that the CPD was slowly hinting that it was a hoax, trying to give him opportunity to come clean. But he kept telling the lies, not just to the media, but to police, all of which were new crimes. And that is part of why the police are so upset. And even now, he still claims he is the victim and his attorney throws shade on the police, who gave him every opportunity to end this charade. So, he earned all those charges. I agree that the initial allegations (MAGA, etc) had the potential to lead to more violence. Very dangerous and irresponsible. If he had gone to trial and been convicted would he have gotten jail? Probably not much if at all. And I would have been ok with that. The important thing was to show this was false and have him admit that. To prevent future false claims.

Wow, so does this mean that a very high powered government official either past or present was in on this hateful very mean hoax, and when it blew up knew Foxx was the one to make it go away?

It's so hard for me to even believe that anyone could stoop so low, but then I do realize that some individuals have morals lower than a snake's belly is to the ground. Sigh.
