RICHTON PARK, IL — A 10-year-old girl brought a semiautomatic handgun to her Richton Park school Wednesday, according to police.

Officers responded around 8:30 a.m. to Neil Armstrong Elementary School for a report of a child with a gun, police said. A teacher had wrestled the loaded weapon from the fourth-grader, WLS reported.

The girl was taken to a hospital for an evaluation, according to police, who said the gun belonged to the child’s parent and that charges were brought in the incident. No one was hurt, police said.

The school underwent a lockdown and was then canceled Wednesday, WLS reported.

The girl’s mother, a Cook County corrections officer, owned the gun and is charged with endangering a minor, according to WLS, which reported the woman was stripped of her law enforcement powers pending an internal investigation, but the child was not charged.

Sure, why not? We haven't had a gun-related situation in the last several days. It was due.
And the weapon was loaded -- or the girl loaded it herself (doubtful, IMO). At least no one was hurt. The teacher who wrestled the weapon from the 10 y/o may well have saved lives, and the teacher surely may well have been the first one injured. SMH.

I'm really glad i don't live in a country were guns are allowed. I know a lot of Americans like the fact that they can defend themselves but i would be scared to death. And now kids are taking these guns into schools more often. I was also be scared of my kids going to school. We have a lot of knife crimes instead of guns and that is just as terrifying lately. You cannot win. People will always find a way to hurt/kill others when they want to but you can hurt/kill a lot more people with a gun that you can with a knife in schools. That teacher might have saves lives.
