Clad in sandals and a purple dress with white lace, Jennifer Ann Lewis left her Rock Island, Illinois, home to buy a pack of Juicy Fruit at Mac’s Liquor Store a few blocks away. It was shortly before 6 p.m. on Sept. 17, 1990, the last time her family saw her alive. Three hours later, a janitor at Jefferson Elementary School in Davenport, Iowa — about 3 miles west of Jennifer’s home — found her body burning near a playground.

Police arrested Stanley Liggins, a 28-year-old friend of Jennifer’s mother and stepfather, Sheri and Joe Glenn, for Jennifer’s murder. He was tried and convicted in her death, first in 1993 and again in 1995. Liggins' defense team exploited errors by police and prosecutors to win a third trial last year. It ended in September with a hung jury. A fourth trial is set to begin March 12 and time may be on Liggins' side.

April 2, 2019. Stanley Liggins kept his composure as a judge read the word he has heard twice before — guilty. After several hours of deliberations over two days, a Black Hawk County jury Tuesday convicted the 57-year-old of first-degree murder in the September 1990 death of Jennifer Lewis, 9, of Rock Island, Ill.

One of the attorneys for Stanley Liggins has filed a motion seeking a new trial just two weeks before he is scheduled to be sentenced to life without parole in the September 1990 murder of 9-year-old Jennifer Lewis. Black Hawk County Public Defender Aaron Hawbaker said in a motion filed Wednesday morning that a Black Hawk County jury's guilty verdict on April 2 was “contrary to the weight of the evidence in that, given the absence of any direct proof of defendant’s guilt, the circumstantial evidence did not and could not as a matter of law establish his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.”... Seventh Judicial District Chief Judge Marlita Greve set a hearing date for May 30, the same day as his sentencing.

I had not seen this, or didn't remember it if I did. I swear we had another thread on Jennifer's case.

Prosecutors in upcoming Liggins trial want testimony about prior sex abuse allowed

The arrest came one month before the rape and murder of 9-year-old Jennifer Lewis.

---------------------------------------------

She said after the little girl successfully testified against him in a sex abuse case and was convicted, Liggins yelled at her daughter as he was lead away.

"Stanley Liggins threatened to kill my daughter," Brown testified.
