I mean, it's possible that potential teen perps had a gun with them, but it seems more likely to me that they somehow overpowered the officer & shot him with his own gun. Word on the street is that his weapon was indeed fired. Now, whether the perps fired it or the Lt. did (at them, not talking suicide) is anyone's guess.
In general, not that many people are walking around this area packing heat, but I'm sure there are some.

Sounds like a great place to live and raise a family!
If you like water activity (liquid or frozen), beer, and greasy bar food, it doesn't get much better in the midwest.

could 1 or 3 hop on but on commuter I think people would say something?
Pretty unlikely at any speed as the vestibule doors close pretty securely. Conductors would be in the vestibules monitoring the train cars for the quickly upcoming Ingleside station stop.

Local investigators don't have the proper equipment to see the recording, so the footage was given to a nearby Department of Homeland Security office, and police hope to learn what it shows soon.
There has been a large Homeland Security truck/bus/trailer in town since pretty much Tuesday. It was at the memorial/vigil and I think I saw it at the Fox Lake PD tonight. Not sure what goes on inside (people transportation, evidence processing, ?), but it is pretty substantial.

So hopefully they know soon which gun was used (his or another gun). I find it very odd that if a different gun was used, that this group of 3 would be out at 8am with a gun hanging around in the abandoned plant. If that is the case, that means they were prepared for something bad to happen. This would lead in the direction of a drug deal. If they were trying to steal scrap metal, would they do this during the daylight and with no car/truck? I also think this could rule out teens or someone who works in the area as I can't imagine that person walking around with a gun ready, and then planning to report to work or school at 8am. Again just speculation, but things just aren't adding up.

If the men overpowered him and fired the gun, then hopefully prints would be on the gun (unless they were (somehow) wearing gloves). Certainly possible, but then what were these guys doing that was so important that they would overpower and kill and cop? Maybe things just escalated and/or they were impaired.

We had gotten a some rain lately in the Chicagoland area, so if the area was swampy, they should be some tracks. However, with all the searchers combing the area, hopefully they marked them early on.

It's also interesting that the 8am timing starts to make me question how these guys got there. The train wouldn't have been an option, as it arrives at 8:30. So either they were there overnight or arrived in the morning. If they left on a train, I think someone may have noticed that someone or several men were sweaty boarding the train (hot/humid out and they were running?). If they had a car, did they leave without being noticed by one of the businesses in the area (a local report where they saw the cop car but nothing else suspicious like a car or truck speeding/driving away)?

I am hoping that based on the huge response last night to the "prank call" that the police do have some confirmation that there were three men and they left on foot (tracks). Otherwise, they may be working on the same info that we have (which is the call in to dispatch).

Finally, looking at social media, for the most part, his public posts are positive of his mud races and family. However, there was one post a month ago about him being turned down for what looks like a police (chief?) job in another community. Perhaps with his upcoming retirement from the Fox Lake Department, this was his next plan but that fell through. Not sure how much that affected him, but if this was coupled with other (currently not-known) issues in his life (money? chief also retiring due to an issue?), maybe he was not right in the head. Just speculation, but hopefully the "significant" video and forensics can clear this as an option as he appears to be a great man.

Didn't some young woman give false info leading the cops on n the wrong direction?
This case is interesting, to bad we have such little info.

I am also a local. While I haven't been to the old cement factory, I've been a patient (well, my animals have) at Fox Lake Animal Hospital since I was a child. There's a wooded area right behind the animal hospital (I guess really in front of it, since the wooded area is across the parking lot from the vet's front door) & every time I've had to take one of my dogs there to go potty, I've thought about how creepy & isolated it feels.

IMO, there is absolutely no way the Lt. took his own life. I did not know him personally, but I know many people who did. There is not a single person on the street here who thinks this was a suicide.

I'm not LE, nor am I into the drug scene, but I've heard that Fox Lake has been having some drug problems lately. I suppose what small town doesn't, though...

Also, Fox Lake is not upscale. It's home to working class people & a place where many go for water recreation when the weather is nice. There are also several bars there. It has a rural, small town feel, IMO.

I believe the killers are locals who somehow managed to slip back into their regular lives & elude the manhunt. I hope once forensics come back, that LE will have more to go on.

I've also wondered if it might be teenage perps, what with the high school being so close by, & with the odd time of day for people to be out acting suspiciously.

The police here are good, dedicated people. They will find these perps. It's just a matter of time. They are smart, too, & know their work. (I agree that the dumb reason given for not being able to view the video was a stall tactic. I'm sure they've seen the video. No doubt.)

Rest in peace, Lt. Justice is coming in your honor.

Thanks button was not enough.
While reading I was hoping and praying for a voice of reason.
My blood pressure just dropped by half.
My hands are starting to feel better already.
I am no longer feeling nauseous.

Rest in peace, indeed Lt. Charles Gliniewicz.
Sending prayers to your family, loved ones, friends and community

Residents and business owners in one of Illinois' most popular recreational areas say a manhunt for three suspects in the killing of an area police officer will bring a more quiet and somber Labor Day weekend than usual.

The northern Illinois boating and fishing playground known as the Chain O' Lakes normally draws tens of thousands of visitors for end-of-summer fun. But concerns mounted Thursday that tourists might decide to go elsewhere because of the heavy police presence and fear that the fugitives could be hiding somewhere in the lush landscape of lakes, wetlands and forest glens.

Also Thursday, authorities said they had recovered video from a homeowner's security system that could provide clues in the search for the three men suspected in the slaying of Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz.

The homeowner told investigators the video shows three people near the scene of the shooting. The recording was turned over to the Department of Homeland Security for analysis, and results were expected later in the day, Lake County Major Crime Task Force Cmdr. George Filenko said, though a public briefing was not planned.

Local investigators hadn't viewed the video because specialized equipment was needed to retrieve the footage from a hard drive. Authorities did not explain how the homeowner was able to see it.

Perhaps it is really not the general public's business to learn any details, but, seriously, wouldn't the powers that be know by now whether or not the officer's weapon was fired, how many times, and have inspected the weapon for fingerprints other than the officers? Where are the spent cartridges from whatever gun was used? Were bullets found impacted at autopsy? Do they ballistically match the officer's gun or not? JMO

Authorities said at a news conference Thursday that a resident in Fox Lake has turned over a security videotape taken in the vicinity of the shooting. The private resident had the security video taken at his home, not far from where the body of Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz was found Tuesday morning.

Police said the footage captured "individuals" in the area who may match the descriptions of the three fugitives -- two white males and a black male.

Gliniewicz told a dispatcher early Tuesday he was checking out three "suspicious" men, while on a routine patrol in the area. Moments later, he radioed that he was chasing the suspects on foot.

Responding officers found the veteran policeman's body in a marshy area a short time later. He had been shot and his firearm was missing. Officials said Thursday that Gliniewicz's gun was later recovered.

As I understand it, the video MAY show the three men and corroborate what the officer reported, but it has to be enhanced. OK. so, when do the local LE get to see it and possibly identify the people in it??HUH? JMO.........Steel, I agree that the video would not be of much use to the homeowner, if its purpose is to identify potential home invaders trespassing on the owners property....would they have to get the FBI or HS involved in deciphering it? JMO

The cameras we have are recorded to a server and then we access it from our computer. But the suspects may not have come onto the homeowner's property making it hard to visualize. They may indeed be trying to get clearer and larger images from a photo that shows suspects in the periphery of the cameras.

Yes - agreed. Homeland security may have lots better equipment to analyze the images to isolate and screenshot images, enhance them and then run them through facial recognition software to see if there are any mugshots that match up.

I'm open to all possibilities. As evidence is developed, some of the possibilities can be disproved. I am as anxious as ever to learn what is on the surveillance video. It was the homeowner who thought that it could be significant and reportedly saw 3 individuals on it. All male, 2white 1 black. The homeowner had a trusted LE friend convey this to investigators. I do not know if he or she saw it or if they only relayed what the homeowner said. Sounds promising, as it would better focus the investigation. JMO
