Lake County authorities said they have a new strategy in their search for three suspects in the fatal shooting of a Fox Lake police officer. They will explain the new strategy in a press conference at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

WATCH LIVE: Authorities unveil new strategy in Fox Lake investigation

The investigation of Lt. Joe Gliniewicz's shooting death continues as Fox Lake business owners prepare for big crowds over Labor Day weekend.

In Fox Lake, the mood is somber and people are still in mourning the death of Lt. Gliniewicz. But many area businesses still want people to visit over the holiday weekend.

Patrons will likely be about sharing their grief and stories about Gliniewicz, their hometown hero, in local bars and restaurants.

"They can all share their thoughts and tell us how they are feeling. It's good for everybody to be able to communicate with each other," said Jacqueline Homola, manager of Route 12 Bar and Grill.

Visitors will also notice more officers in the area. Although the intense manhunt is over, the search is still on for the three suspects in Gliniewicz's murder.

One strategy seems to be a BIG reward.

Trying to catch notes during the live stream:

· Det Christopher Covelli
· Motorola Solutions – pledged $50K to any tipthat leads to arrest and conviction.
· Number of pledges and offers.
· Large # of tips. FBI has offered a fully staffedfunctional tip line.
· Will help the process leads and investigate. Tips# - 1-800-CALLFBI 24x7 operation
· Web site: www.fbi.gov/foxlake
· Leads or tips or suggestions can be submitted. Imagesand videos can be submitted there too.
· Now Ali Kapadia, Motorola VP. This is an areawhere many Motorola employees live, hence the donation.
· Next CMDR George Filenko
· Questions about a weapon. Confirmed it wasofficer’s weapon obtained at the scene. Forensics underway. Substantial amountof video. Coordinating that w/FBI. They are doing that today.
· Contacted by a number of other videos, includingLake County Dept of Trans. Intersection cameras. Usually recycled within a fewhours but they held video in this case. Likely traffic.
· How many times fired?
· Found near the LT remains, can’t reveal how manytimes it was fired.
· Video from homeowner yesterday to HS has stillnot been returned. It’s an actual hard drive. That video will get turned overto the FBI.
· w/in 24 hours they have gotten video with Imagesof people that they believe are “subjects of people we are interested intalking to”
· mix of video from residences and businesses
· 2 main roadways surround that area.
· Q: Any schools with missing kids, employees notat work, etc. A: They do cover that in their canvassing process.
· Caliber is 40 cal gun.
· Acquired several more videos (overnight) they believeare more relevant that the one sent to HS.
· Videos they examined before and after the approx.time of the murder. Won’t reveal if they show individuals entering or leavingthe area
· The videos all come together chronologically. Differentcameras putting a storyline together. “there’s a commonality there”.
· Historically have seen in uncommon locationsknown to only those who are local (but not just Fox Lake), generally/historicallythey find that individuals are more comfortable hiding in place. They arehoping these individuals are still within reach.

Second half. Sorry for the messy notes, hope others can use to fill in other details I missed.

  • Still an ongoing criminal investigation, won’t disclose forensic evidence
  • Stronger sense got away on foot or on car? Initial would have been more likely on foot.
  • Not prepared to give out specific descriptions yet. Description still is the Lt.’s original one.
  • Individuals they have been interviewing they have been gathering DNA swabs from them, it’s part of their process.
  • They do feel safety of the community is not in jeopardy? Amount of police presence and saturation patrols, community should feel safe.
  • FBI “source in Michigan”? vagueness of the Lt.’s description means they are getting calls from all over. Example, MI was suspicious individuals call. Was associated a gas station, and a vehicle stolen from Chicagoland, so it was passed on as possible relevant info.
  • Several videos (has stressed this a LOT)
  • Traveling together or separated? Don’t know, can’t answer.
  • Will discuss no forensics.
  • I am oldest member of the task force, almost 60. What’s energizing these guys is we have a murdered colleague. Are we tired, yes, do we send people home to get rest, yes, but have enough resources from the law enforcement in place right now. Needs to stay focused and efficient.
  • Will sequence them by time. Collect from individual or business, if not timestamped have a general idea of when the individuals were present so you can timestamp from that.
  • FBI has the video for time sequencing except what was sent to HS, and as soon as HS gets that back to them it will go to FBI to include. HS was there when that video was retrieved, so he made call to give it to their lab.
  • Q: “weapon and his pepper spray were missing”? A: perhaps they didn’t see the weapon immediately. You see your colleague dead, overgrown area, our ETs have been out there with machetes and high-powered magnets, ATF canine being brought to scene today too.
  • Coroners report? Is it a homicide? Coroner has a process, in process.
END of interview

He just said he's "optimistic" they'll be making an arrest.

After watching this video I am 100% confident that this is a murder, not a suicide. I also love that he mentioned that they have SEVERAL videos that tied together create a storyline. In other words, what he is trying to say is that they have video of the 3 suspects before and after the murder. I also think adding in the reward is going to be a big incentive to have someone point the finger as soon as possible. I also get the distinct impression that they feel the men were on foot and were local or from the surrounding community. I give them less than one week and they will have their men. <modsnip> JMO

From the presser: They're following up on all leads. One lead is from Michigan, in which someone called police about suspicious people at a gas station. When police arrived, the people were gone but they were able to determine that the car the suspicious people were in was a stolen vehicle from the Chicagoland area. They're currently looking into that.

Could be something, could be nothing.

All of their progress and potential leads are encouraging though, imo.

from the presser today at 12:30 central

have acquired SEVERAL more video that we believe are even MORE relevant.

We can tell chronologically - the FBI has the technology to put these videos into a sequential order to create a timeline. We have video of before and shortly after the crime.

I think we are optimistic about all of the videos. Different cameras putting the story together. There is a commonality there that makes us interested in those videos. not at liberty to reveal any forensic info, can confirm it was officers weapon found at the scene. We will not stop until we make arrests.

perps had local knowledge. Not necessarily in the community but possibly from neighboring communities.

saturation patrols from multiple agencies make us confident that the community at large is not in immediate danger.

partial resort community, plans in place for this holiday weekend. we are prepared for the possibility that some of the folks visiting during this holiday weekend may contact us to let us know they suspect someone has been squatting in their property. Check boats etc to see if it appears someone may have been squatting there.

haven't had a chance to view the videos. we are not prepared to give out specific descriptions of suspects yet. Those videos are still being pieced together and enhanced.

You all know in order to get a DNA match there must be a match in the system. If we get DNA sample from scene we will run it against codis.

We feel that the saturation of police presence that the community should feel safe.

Because of the vagueness of the description of the individuals provided by officer it makes it hard to sift through various tips. Federal partners are following up on leads that are further away.

I am not technology expert - we have a call in to see how much progress has been made with the initial video provided by business owner but that is not the only nugget we have we have multiple videos.

No idea if suspects separated or are still together.

wow this is a long presser with little info.

We do not need any other agencies involved. We have to keep investigation focused. We have a mission here and we will keep going until we solve this case.

what you are going to do is if it has a time stamp that will give a general idea of when these individuals were in that area. That is how the videos will be used to create a timeline of the activity that day.

It is great to know that a lot of tips are coming in. While it slows them down because they have to check them all out its worth it. It makes it more likely that the tip/s they are needing will come in.

Quote:
On Friday, authorities announced a 24-hour staffed tip-line has been established to efficiently process the large number of leads as they investigate Lt. Joe Gliniewicz's shooting death.

They must find these men. Until they do no officer is safe or anyone else for that matter. It is obvious they are very dangerous to shoot an officer in cold blood and they wouldn't hesitate doing it again if cornered, imo.

I know all police agencies up there have to be on heightened alert for their own safety knowing how dangerous it can be for them if and when they find them. I just pray that no other officers are killed when trying to apprehend these three men.

It is good to see how aggressively they are investigating the murder of this fine officer. I do have confidence they will catch them. Imo, someone out there right now knows who the murderer/s are so with the tip line bringing in many leads maybe these people will do the right thing and call.

IMO

I think I heard him say they are taking buccal swabs of everyone they interview. Did anyone else hear that?

  • #392
I thought it notable that he said that Homeland Security is having a little difficulty with 'that' video.

Good to know there are additional videos.

I heard it as well. Just couldn't type it fast enough. Got hung up on how to spell buccal

That seems odd since the owner was able to see it was 2 white males and 1 black male. Wonder what the difficulty is? Not techie here.

IMHO, Cmdr George Filenko's choice of words don't sound like hedging at all (as I would expect if they are uncertain about homicide vs. suicide). He mentioned being able to answer [a question] when they make an arrest, saying he's confident they will make an arrest, saying the videos have a commonality--doesn't sound to me like he's leaving any room for suicide.

I'm not sure what that means exactly, the videos have a commonality?

  • #396
It would be great if there is some surveillance video of the three inside a business or milling around just outside so that a clerk or customer could possibly remember seeing them or hearing them or a clothing description. LE seems much more confident today, with recently acquired video. I hope that it pans out. And I really hope that the crime scene was meticulously investigated and documented. Hopefully footprints in the swampy escape area, etc. JMO

He used the word 'commonality' in answering a question about whether the suspects can be seen in all the videos. He was obviously choosing his words carefully and would only say that the videos have a "commonality". Obviously, we can only speculate about what "common" element is seen in each video that ties them together. Hope that helps.

ETA: I took it to mean that while he couldn't confirm that the suspects are shown in all the videos, he would go so far as to confirm that there is something suspicious (maybe persons??) that ties all the videos together.

We had a pretty good 1/2 hour shower come through the area yesterday early evening. Pretty common this time of year, with high heat and humidity. His mention of being back out there several times may have been in anticipation of weather becoming a factor with the scene.

Just guessing....maybe the locations before and after the event, and directions headed. And 3 men together in all of them? JMO

That's how I took it too, and that whatever the commonality is is what helps them put all the videos together to tell a story. I have no idea what it could be though. The officer's vehicle, the suspects, a specific vehicle like maybe a school bus...?
