Yes, I can see someone who was not properly hydrated rushing to the scene and trying to keep up with his dog Succumbing to the heat. Do k 9 officers carry salt tabs and water? Some here seem to have no love for the police and want to paint every part of this as an example of how dishonest and inept they are.

Personally, I respect and appreciate honest peace officers, of which the majority are ,I believe. I do, however, have no respect for dishonest agenda-driven law enforcement. JMO

Yes, they carry water and this new fangled.technology called cell phones and radios where they request water, power bars, bathroom breaks, smoke breaks, switchout.

Yeah, I don't like liars. Especially ones trying to take my tax money.

Do you know any of these guys and gals personally? Do you know any of them by reputation ? Is it possible that the k9 officer ignored his own health due to the excitement of the chase? You seem to have quite a bit of anger towards them. Do you think that they are not as professional as you?

Well, don't sell yourself short -- construction work is usually far more physically taxing than working with a scent dog, to the best of my knowledge.

And I'd want to add, no disrespect, but I don't think that the folks here generalize LE as being corrupt or inept, but that doesn't mean that there may not have been problems with the LE response to this event, or that there may be some problems with, shall we say, competence or direction -- but that doesn't imply any sort of indictment of LE in general.

And he didn't say some became over heated. He said evacuated.
Standard protocol is you put the person somewhere cooler, give them water and if they don't improve in 30 minutes or get worse quickly then you evacuate.

So, more than one person didn't get better with a cold cloth and a cool drink?

Or is it likely this was big news and some people like attention and a little workmans comp?

Who but people with no love of the police are going to question someone out on a pleasant 88 degree day looking for a cop killer?

I think there is dishonesty running rampant. Honesty is not a profession. JMO

This article does't say anything about bringing in another handler, but it does say that the dog lost the scent rather than the police giving up on the trail.
http://patch.com/illinois/crystallake/k-9-tracks-gunshot-residue-14-mile-lt-gliniewiczs-gun
The main problem with that article is that it mostly quotes from material as reported by The Daily Herald. I.E.

“In the hours after his body was found, a K9 unit specifically trained to track gunshot residue followed a scent for more than a quarter-mile away from Gliniewicz’s gun, according to the Daily Herald. The dog followed the scent to the southeast before the dog’s handler had to stop due to fatigue and dehydration.

After the handler stopped, the dog lost the scent, according to the article”.

You ignore your own safety or health to the detriment of the team and the investigation and you get zero sympathy from me. And his commander should not have allowed it either. No excuse. You do the job you are paid and trained to do.

So you think that the officer that was evacuated was dishonest? The people who decided to evacuate him were dishonest too?

So nobody makes mistakes or encounters obstacles that cannot be overcome in your world as long as they are honest and doing their job?

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion from what was written. Perhaps the officer was just poorly trained or unsuitable for the job, or perhaps s/he was just having a bad day. I don't think that the 'honesty' statement was necessarily directed at the presumed dog handler, as well.

I have no idea. I am saying I find it very unlikely anyone suffered true diagnosed by a doctor heat exhaustion that day. And if someone did it was more likely to be someone stuck in an unairconditioned helicopter picking up other people claiming to have heat exhaustion.

I have to attend to some things but I am interested in your opinions. There seems to be righteous anger felt by Cady and Vestigare towards just about everything these cops have done. The police officers I've known have always wanted to do the best they could. I just have a hard time believing that they would purposefully screw up so badly.

Are you familiar with chain of command, SOP and training? That all mitigates a great deal of this uncertainty you have.

I never said they purposely screwed up.

I'm not SURE of anything, and I do not necessarily think that the officer whose dog lost the scent is lying. I do think that LE needed an explanation for why the dog and handler stopped.....in a frantic search for two white guys and a black guy, as the deceased Lieutenant reported. The community would want to know WHY. JMO

It was 20 years ago in 1995 and it was a string of 100+ degree days.

Yep, five days. Math is not my strong suit.

Well, I guess my question about the GPS has been answered. Sound to me like he could have possibly arrived there early enough to set up a scene? I don't know at this point. But I would be respectful of the authorities to be able to put together a full assessment of the events that went on that morning prior to making any announcements. As I said earlier, a suicide ruling will end the investigation immediately. I think we should give them enough time to put together a thorough conclusion based upon all of the evidence before making any further statements.

I don't really see the anger, but I do know that there are many people who are somewhat frustrated by the way that this case has been handled. Mind you, I do not think that anyone has been critical of the boots on the ground. Just a guess here, but I think that most people have a problem with the management rather than the workers in this case.
