GUILTY IN - Christian Choate, 13, starved, beaten to death, Gary, April 2009

Throughout the sentencing hearing, Riley Choate showed no emotion and sat flipping through court documents as details of Christian Choate’s years of beatings, imprisonment in a small dog cage and starvation were again told in court.

Even defense lawyer Lemuel Stigler called the case against Choate, “a very, very bad case, a terrible set of circumstances.”

Deputy Prosecutor Michael Woods described how the boy was systemically beaten, kept in a dog cage next to Riley Choate’s desk in his parents’ bedroom and given little food.

“Christian Choate sat in that cage, losing his mind, losing his strength and probably his humanity,” Woods said, adding that Riley Choate sat at the desk next to the cage and played car racing games on his computer while his son slowly deteriorated.

“There were many other children in this house. They all saw Christian suffer. Those images haunt their sleep and drives them back into counseling,” the prosecuting attorney said.

The stepmother of Christian Choate was sentenced Tuesday morning to 35 years in prison in the 2009 neglect and death the 13-year-old boy.

Kimberly Kubina, 47, of Gary, Ind., pleaded guilty in May to felony neglect in Christian's death, a story that attracted national headlines for its gruesomeness, the Northwest Indiana Times reports.

this is an old article but one I do not recall reading back when the case broke.

maternal aunts of Christian describe him and his personality. I cannot copy any snips over but to paraphrase, When last they saw Christian (before Riley got custody) he was a typical little boy who loved hot wheels, action figures, the movie Toy Story and Pokemon.

It made me feel a little better to know what he enjoyed before he became Riley's scapegoat and torture victim. :(

I know this case is over, the perpetrators jailed, Christian's whereabouts are a mystery no more. His story, horrific as it was, is now told.

But I still can't let this thread go. I cannot remove it from my subscription list, I cannot just "close the door" on it.

He is a part of me, his story is now a piece of mine, in a very personal way.

Rest Christian. You will never be forgotten honey.

A resident of Gary's Black Oak neighborhood, Christian began his public education in Lake Ridge Schools, district officials said. They said he finished kindergarten, two years of first grade and began his second-grade year at Hosford Park Elementary School in Gary.

He was withdrawn in March 2005, three months before school was over for the summer, and transferred to Merrillville Community School Corp
Home schooling withdrawal ended Gary boy's oversight

Seems to be a pattern of these murdered/abused children taken out of school, don't they keep track of these children bless them,as these people seem to know this way around the system, if they don't let previous school know where they moved and schools confirm the child is attending there, then definite checks on the children are needed from then onwards..
