I'm curious about something and I hope someone can help me out. I've never been on a cruise and I wonder just how much this family's cruise cost, for a family of four (2 adults, 2 children) and two sets of grandparents. I'm asking because I took another look at the crowdfunding sites for SA and the rest of the family, and they give the impression that these people don't have much money.

It very much depends on what type of cabin you have and the season. CW was likely free or a greatly reduced fare. And the brother was probably a reduced fare as well. For a non balcony outside cabin they were probably looking at anywhere from $800 to $1000 per person.

I took a quick look at RCCL website and found 7 day cruises departing from San Juan
in July, ranging from $950 to $2,346 per person, depending on type of room. This is without taxes and port fees, which would be an additional $100 (approximately)

Multiply that by 6 adults and that is some major coin. On some cruises kids under a certain age are free.

And July cruises are very expensive as compared to off-season cruise prices.

I wonder who paid for all of that? Just curious. Under the circumstances with all the go and fund mes and such. Capture.PNG

I doubt as a cop and an attorney they would struggle to pay a few thousand dollars for a family vacation. Funerals and flying back and forth for court appearances on the other hand can add up pretty quickly I’m sure. Frankly, it’s ridiculous what Americans pay to bury people. Apologies to any undertakers out there. You can drag me out into the woods and let nature have me as far as I’m concerned. Don’t need people ogling at my waxified corpse thank you very much.

Thank you so much. According to my calculation, that would be an average of $3,500 per couple (I imagine that alcohol, shore excursions and extras are not included, so it's about $4,000 per couple, or $12,000 for all six adults, plus a certain amount for the children).

Could it be that one of the grandparents recently sold a home, downsized, or otherwise had the means to fund the trip for the family?

My husband who drives for a living heard on the radio the first reporting that Chloe had accidentally fallen . He had only sympathy for SA. He had heard nothing since. He had not heard of the lawsuit against RCCL. The news outlets don't follow up on their work. Beyond lazy.When I told him what I had learned through this site he was appalled. MW is looking for the uninformed juror.

Great observation, Pigey.

I've noticed there's a lot of "headlineitis" going on these days, and I'm guilty of it as well, from time to time: Just reading a headline and assuming that it encapsulates, or even defines the entire story. IMO

I actually happen to be a TA. I just priced that same ship for July. Assuming they all had balcony staterooms, the room with mom, dad, and the two kids is $5782.20 including taxes. The cheapest balcony for two adults is $3462.10. The absolute cheapest flights from Indianapolis to San Juan are $462 per person. (And they're crappy times.) So, for just air and cruise, we're looking at $12,706. That does not include a hotel prior to the cruise, any drink packages, shore excursions, gratuities or specialty dining. They aren't poor!

While it's possible they booked under a kids sail free promo, they generally black that promo out during the summer months.

RCL Boarding Procedures

@oviedo TYVM. Seems very streamlined.
So for a group booking, does each member of party have to do this individually online, pre-cruise?
Or can one person do this for multiple members of party?

{{ETA: sorry, I think you answered below. I'm behind on reading.}}
Does pax do anything dock/boarding? Show passport? Or?
Or just RCL's facial recgtn?

If you look at my post on page 25, I included a copy of the entire cruise contract, and a screenshot of where you have to accept it. You can either accept for the entire party, or accept for just yourself.

My March spring break was buy one get one half off - they flew back into Chicago so my guess is that’s where they flew out of - flights from Chicago to south bend are plentiful (at least they used to be when I was logging 100k miles a year on Delta in software installations)

Not sure why people seem so concerned with how they paid for their family vacation. People save for family vacations.

Probably because they've pretty much had their hands out for money, even before the "tragic accident." So it kind of looks strange to a lot of us.

They had go fund me set up before CW died? That would be interesting if true. Are you certain about that?

Yes, it is/was for their son's hockey trip to Europe, earlier last year.

ChrisPBacon, thank you for posting the video of Winkleman's news conference from July 9, 2019. I had not seen this particular one. If you watch it on the YouTube site, you can read the comments. Almost all are against the grandfather's actions, even long before the CCTV had been released. There is also a moment in the video when Winkleman says that the parents are texting him nonstop.

Wow, people have really dug into their lives. And folks wonder why people clam up in front of LE. Lol.

Respectfully, they have pretty much put themselves out there since almost day one of this debacle. So yes, people are going to be digging in to their lives. Much more will be coming out during the trial, you can be sure of that. :)
