We're two days in. President Trump has suggested a timeline of four weeks. The US/Israel have also attacked the Revolutionary Guard, not just Khamenei. We don't know how much else might happen over the next days or weeks. We don't know if Iran will surrender and acquiesce to US demands. If they do, I would fear that would rule out a fresh, democratic government and the US might just agree to work with a modified non-Khamenei government. But we can only wait and see.
I have yet to see a timeline about a conflict from Trump that was actually accurate. I'll happily eat my words if this wraps up neatly in four weeks, but I doubt I'll need to.

This is a system of military and government that seems highly organised and with a design that is able to accommodate losses and replace important figures swiftly. They're not just going to fall over themselves and surrender to occupation or subjugation because of the loss of their leader, and if that is the assumption by Trump, then this isn't going to go the way he hopes it will.

MOO

I'm still confused.
Trump said that he was all about peace and that the USA wouldn't be involved in more wars (when he suddenly withdrew troops from Afghanistan and abandoned many Afghanis who helped the Americans). Then he bombed Venezuela. Then he bombed Iran.

If the excuse is that Venezuela is bad to their citizens and Iran is bad to their citizens (and I agree they are) then what's up? Is Afghanistan good to their citizens? I think we can all agree that they aren't. Did the US Admin do anything supportive of the Venezuelans after kidnapping (against international law) Maduro? I haven't heard of anything other than laying claim to their oil (which would make the average Venezuelan poorer, not better off).

Please help me make sense of this.

Iran has layers a bit like the Soviet Union did. (Not quite as harsh, but Iran is up there. Maybe they are more harsh??)

It took decades of infilitration within the Soviet Union. All the stories about all the spies. All the technology competitions. K-12 was geared toward overcoming the Soviet Union. I took Spanish instead of French because of the Soviet Union. We had physical fitness classes because of the Soviet Union. I majored math because STEM degrees were needed to stave off the Soviet Union.

Everytime a premier would die, everyone would get hopeful. Eventually, it collapsed from within.

But boy the US worked it's butt off dealing with the Soviet Union.

The first Trump administrations' Department of Justice offered a $15 million reward for Maduro's capture. The Biden administration increased it to $25 million. He was accused of being a narco terrorist, and US forces conducted an operation to capture him.

None of this of course has to do with Iran refusing to make a deal that involved scrapping it's nuclear ambitions, limiting it's ballistic missiles, and ending support for terrorist organizations that have killed thousands of innocent people.

This journalist is reporting from Tehran.

"We have been receiving reports from across the country about escalations ramping up and ongoing strikes.

In Sanandaj, footage showed huge explosions; also in other cities across the country, such as Bushehr, and in the southern part of Iran.

Also, here in the capital from midnight up until the last hour, we have been hearing the sounds of massive explosions, all indicating that the trajectory of the strikes by Israel and the US continue up to the moment.

That’s not only limited to the military HQs or political centres.

Across the city we see footage of residential areas and civilian areas being targeted, leaving fatalities. In one of them, in Tehran’s Niloofan Square, at least 20 people were killed.

Added to that is the very disastrous footage that are coming from Minab, where an elementary school girl was targeted leaving more than 160 dead.

There are concerning numbers regarding the civilian fatalities in other cities and places, as well."

I can understand the goal to stop nuclear research and development in Iran. I can even understand the murder of Iran's leader.

What I don't understand is blowing up schools and hospitals. That's the best way to lose any goodwill that people may have regarding the stated intentions for launching war against Iran. Isn't the theory that the people of Iran are oppressed and in need of protection from their government? How does bombing hospitals deter nuclear R&D?

"A spokesman for Iran’s health ministry, Hossein Kermanpour, said that the Gandhi Hospital in nothern Tehran was being evacuated and that at least three other hospitals in Iran had been affected by strikes. After missiles hit near one hospital in the city of Ahvaz, intensive care patients were among those who had to be moved to other facilities, he said.
...

The director general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said reports of damage to the Gandhi Hospital in Tehran, Iran, were “extremely worrying” and his organization was working to verify the incident."

Canadians can get behind this statement from the Prime Minister, but In My Opinion, they cannot get behind the US and Israel spending the next month blowing up civilians, children, vulnerable people, or education and health care facilities.

"Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security."

"The stock exchanges in Dubai and Abu Dhabi will be closed "until further notice" due to the ongoing conflict in the region, the UAE's financial regulatory authority announced Sunday.

The Emirates have been hit by Iranian strikes since Saturday in response to joint Israeli-US attacks on the Islamic republic.

An initial statement said the closure would be for Monday and Tuesday, but that position was quickly revised."

I did. I served in the pointless war in Afghanistan.

I’d rejoin and be in theater for this in a heartbeat. A once in a lifetime opportunity to help collapse a terror regime, or at the very least, significantly degrade its ability to terrorize people around the world.

Again, the regime Iran is directly and indirectly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

Look at what they are doing right now. This is exactly who they are.
Thank you for your service, MassGuy!

Here is another source that is not Al Jazeera. It's the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Yeah but it doesn't tell us much. We have Iranian claims without corroboration. We don't know the true death toll or exactly what happened (we've seen plenty of self inflicted damage caused by anti aircraft fire in these conflicts). They fire wildly into the air and those munitions have to land somewhere.

Government areas and military facilities are protected by surface to air missiles. Interceptors miss and sometimes don't detonate.

Of course it's possible that a US or Israeli munition went off course, but what is very curious is that we aren't seeing the usual signs (debris with markings indicating their origin).

The bombing of the girl's school in Iran is confirmed by news outlets around the world. The unknowns are the number of fatalities, number of injured, and origin of the bomb.

The US government released a statement claiming that Iran wants to negotiate. Iran released a statement declaring that the US government statement untrue. I believe Iran.

It reminds me of the US government declaring that Mark Carney "walked back" his speech at Davos, so Carney had to release a statement that he meant what he said at Davos. That is, the US government has also released false information about Canada's Prime Minister.

"Iranian security chief Ali Larijani denies on X that Iran wants to negotiate with the United States. Yesterday, US President Trump said in an interview with Atlantic Magazine that Iran's new leaders had indicated they wanted to negotiate.

Larijani is a hardliner and was a top adviser to the slain spiritual leader Khamenei. He further writes that Trump has created chaos in the region."

I believe Iran because they say this stuff.....They have a long history of it......Sometimes they don't mean what they say, but I certainly believe they said it.

Hopefully he won't be around much longer then. Something like Nasrallah, when Israel kept killing his successors.

The US Embassy in Kuwait is urging Americans to stay home due to a threat

"There is a continuing threat of missile and drone attacks on Kuwait. Do not come to the embassy.
...

Images of smoke plumes near the US embassy in Kuwait are being shared on social media. It's not yet clear what exactly is on fire."

This is exactly what's going to happen.

Israel's a chessmaster, and their opponents can't even manage a round of Connect 4.

My favorite example of this is when it turned out Iran's counterintelligence unit to suss out Mossad spies was being headed up by (yes, you guessed it, folks!) a Mossad agent. 🤣

You gotta give it to the IR: They put the counter-intelligent in counterintelligence.
