Detective Sergeant David Scahill gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court that he arrested Mr Puska at 7.22pm this evening at Tullamore Garda Station and that when he charged him with the murder of Ms Murphy, Mr Puska replied "no".

Defence Solicitor Eoin Lysaght applied for free legal aid and for the services of an interpreter going forward for all hearings and consultations.

Judge Catherine Staines remanded Mr Puska in custody to appear again at Clover Hill District Court on 26 January.

Meanwhile, a second man, who was arrested this morning under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act 1939, has been released without charge.

A man has been charged at Tullamore District court with the murder of Ashling Murphy in Co Offaly.

Jozef Puska, 31, was brought before a special sitting of Tullamore District Court this evening.

Mr Puska, with an address in Lynally Grove, Tullamore in Co Offaly, was heckled as he was taken from a Garda car into court this evening.

He was remanded in custody at Cloverhill Prison after the brief hearing.

Inspector Kieran Keyes applied to Judge Catherine Staines for a remand in custody in Cloverhill Prison to a sitting of Cloverhill District Court on January 26.

The accused, wearing a grey hoodie and trousers, was assisted by a Slovakian interpreter in court.

Legal aid was granted when the court was told Mr Puska was on a disability payment.

31-year-old Slovakian man appeared in court tonight charged with the murder of 23-year-old teacher Ashling Murphy in Ireland, and was remanded in custody after being heckled by an angry crowd outside the courthouse.

Another man also in his 30s who was arrested today has been released without charge.

Jozef Puska, who was arrested on Tuesday, appeared before a special sitting of Tullamore District Court at 8.15pm tonight. Following his court appearance, he was remanded into custody at Cloverhill Prison.

Puska was pushed through an angry crowd as he was brought from a Garda car to the special sitting of Tullamore District Court in County Offaly on Wednesday evening.

He was pictured wearing a mask and a grey tracksuit as he arrived, surrounded by police officers, press photographers and angry onlookers.

The man, reportedly Slovakian and living in Tullamore, was arrested yesterday after he was discharged from a Dublin hospital, and was under questioning in the town where Ashling was killed as the main suspect in her death.

A file is to be prepared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
