Operating rooms are completely out of service at Gaza's largest hospital, director says

From CNN’s Hamdi Alkhshali in Atlanta and Jo Shelley in Tel Aviv

None of the operating rooms at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza are functioning due to lack of electricity, the medical center's director told Al-Araby TV on Sunday.
"The operating rooms are completely out of service, and now the wounded come to us and we cannot give them anything other than first aid,” Dr. Muhammad Abu Salmiya said.

“Whoever needs surgery dies, and we cannot do anything for him.”

The hospital director said staff were trying to keep premature babies at the hospital alive after oxygen ran out and they had to be moved from the neonatal unit’s incubators.

“I was with them a while ago. They are now exposed, because we have taken them out of the incubators. We wrap them in foil and put hot water next to them so that we can warm them,” Abu Salmiya said.

The doctor said several children have died while in the intensive care unit and the nursery over the last day.

More background: Heavy fighting near Gaza’s largest hospital has left it in a “catastrophic situation,” with patients and staff trapped inside, ambulances unable to collect the wounded and life-support systems without electricity, health officials and aid agencies report.

The World Health Organization says Al-Shifa has been without power for three days.
“It's been three days without electricity, without water and with very poor internet, which has severely impacted our ability to provide essential care,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on the social media platform X.

Dispute over fuel offer: The Israeli military said it put 300 liters of fuel at the entrance to the Al-Shifa Hospital complex on Sunday, but that Hamas had blocked the hospital from receiving it.

Abu Salmiya, the hospital director, told Al-Araby TV that Israeli officials had indeed called him to offer the fuel — which he said would provide power to run the generators for only thirty minutes — but that staff had been too scared to go get it.

The Israel Defense Forces released a video it said showed soldiers delivering the jerry cans to a curbsidelocation near the hospital entrance. It also released an audio recording, purportedly of a hospital official accusing a Hamas leader at the health ministry of refusing to allow it to be collected.

Abu Salmiya said it was the presence of Israeli tanks that prevented collection.
“Of course, my paramedic team was completely afraid to go out,” he said, adding, “We want every drop of fuel, but I told (the IDF) that it should be sent through the International Red Cross or through any international institution.”

Hamas dismissed the allegations and said the Israeli fuel delivery was a propaganda stunt.

BBM. The presence of Israeli tanks prevented the collection of a pittance amount of fuel. Yet those same tanks made no effort whatsoever to deliver the fuel into the hospital or to enter the hospital and clear the Hamas out of there. smh.

Dr Goss says moving babies like those in the pictures safely would normally require highly specialised equipment including transport incubators.

Here is a photo from the article. They are laying on a thin mattress on the floor. At least they could cover the side of a hospital bed and place them for more warmth.

But the good Dr above says they need specialized equipment to transport. Would seem they not even getting minimum care laying on the floor.

So much of what is being said just doesn't make sense.

Is it true that there are Hamas leaders in Qatar and other places? How will Israel eradicate those? They can‘t attack Qatar next, can they?

A bigger question than the problem of the Hamas leaders that seem to be out of reach of justice, is what to do about the hatred taught to children which leads to adults yelling "gas the Jews".

This highlights the real goal of Hamas and other terrorists, a deep conviction of religious belief that Jewish people need to be "exterminated" from all of the earth.

Brainwashing has led to a lack of self-preservation and disregard for human life, the perceived rewards for martyrdom and social status lead families to allow or even push young men into terrorism.

A lot of people were never taught what the Nazis were really about and are oblivious to hints and outright displays of antisemitism being alive and well all over the world.

MOO only, anyone commenting on what is to be done for lasting peace, needs to read the Hamas charter, and then give suggestions on what to do.

It is an absolute disgrace which is why so many countries are wanting a war crime investigation to include Israel.

Which so many countries, actual countries, not countries where there are protests, are calling for Israel to be investigated for war crimes?

None of it makes sense, but I don't expect it to. The health ministry in Gaza is run by HAMAS.. so no surprises there. I don't believe much of what is coming out of Gaza. They have ever reason to lie and blame Israel for everything so I just don't believe it. They were running out of fuel weeks ago, no electricity weeks ago, yet here we are 3 weeks later still about to run out or just ran out? Well it's hard to believe anything when they won't do what is in the best intrest of their own people. They say they can't do it, but then not doing it is putting them at more risk. They say these babies need special care, but laying on the floor is not special care.. they can be moved... it would take what an hour or two and they'd have all the special care they need. I just think these poor babies are another "shield" for HAMAS. Everyone wanting to know why Israel isn't going in.. maybe because going in is a trap? Why won't they let the babies leave? That is the real question.

The Associated Press has this update on al-Shifa hospital, where the last generator ran out of fuel Saturday, leading to the deaths of three premature babies and four other patients, according to the Health Ministry.

It said another 36 babies are at risk of dying.

Israel’s military asserted it placed 300 liters (79 gallons) of fuel near Shifa overnight for an emergency generator powering incubators for premature babies and coordinated the delivery with hospital officials. “Sadly, they haven’t taken the fuel yet,” spokesperson Lt. Col. Richard Hecht said. He said if this fuel doesn’t work, they will seek “other solutions for the babies.”

A Health Ministry spokesperson, Ashraf al-Qidra, told Al Jazeera the fuel would not be enough to operate the generator an hour. “This is a mockery towards the patients and children,” Al-Qidra said.

Why, why is the world not screaming, "Hamas, get out of your tunnels, leave the area of the hospitals, quit letting babies die for your propaganda?"
MOO but there is ample proof of Hamas' extensive tunnel system and misfire rockets killing civilians.

Interesting article about the tunnels and the risk and difficulty of finding and searching them.

I know they have captured many HAMAS fighters and have been interrogating them also. I'd be willing to bet they have enough intel from their own surveillance and from those interrogations to know exactly where tunnels are around those hospitals. They would not be surrounding it and putting up such a fight about this hospital if there was not real intel saying there was a threat there.

I'd be surprised if the good doctor had time to take a break with all the carnage he is dealing with, not to forget the skimpy supplies. But, whatever you want to believe is your choice. I just know that hospital is in chaos
Whatever you want to believe is also your choice, but the facts appear that this Dr. MS may not be operating or dealing directly with patients.
It looks like he is there as an observer and to be --as I stated in the post earlier, to be a mouthpiece for Hamas and not much else.
There is no proof the hospital is in chaos; except for the word of the hospital director who may or may not be honest.

They are deeply loyal to them, not just in Gaza but in Jordan as well ?

Like saying something without saying it ?

I.e., we support Hamas wholeheartedly but don't want the world to know this, as the support --esp. money-- for Palestine might cease if it's known we support murder of infants.

Just an oddly worded statement, and Dr. M. Sadaa will have to get along without my faith in what he says.

Top Biden aide says US concerned about civilian casualties in fight for Shifa hospital

[...]

“The United States does not want to see firefights in hospitals where innocent people, patients receiving medical care, are caught in the crossfire. And we’ve had active consultations with the Israel Defense Forces on this,” Sullivan tells the CBS News program “Face the Nation.”

Sullivan notes the IDF has said it’s working to ensure the safety of patients “while they also try to figure out a way to try to deal with the fact that Hamas is operating in a way that is outside the bounds of any civilized concept of how you would think about using a hospital, using human shields.”

[...]

Sullivan also appears to back Israeli allegations about Hamas’s use of Al-Shifa.

“Without getting into intelligence information, we can just look at the open source reporting that Hamas is using hospitals as it uses many facilities for command-and-control, for weapons storage, to house its fighters, and this is a violation of the laws of war,” he says.

We know that ambulances are used to transport patients in need of emergency medical care, and hospitals are institutions where patients go to receive medical treatment.

Right?

For Hamas, ambulances are used to transport its operatives and weapons to disguise them as civilians, and hospitals are in fact terrorist infrastructure...not the most medical purpose.

This is against international law and turns them into legitimate military targets.

The facts are -- that Hamas lies.
If by threat from Hamas, or the opposite -- solidarity with Hamas, the information coming out of the hospitals cannot be believed.
Second bolded : Exactly. It's very likely that the IDF would be slaughtered if they entered the hospital.

Many of these sources are being advised by news possibly coming directly from the hospital, so unless a person is there in person, they are reporting what they're being told.
Not blaming the msm sources.
It's like a figurative war of propaganda on a large scale, as if the physical war wasn't bad enough.

Another possibility is they know once the patients are out of there, Israel will attack hard. They need the babies especially to be in that hospital. Then anything that happens can be blamed on Israel. Israel knows what and who they are up against. They have offered to evacuate the babies.. yet they can't be moved.. too risky. Those babies in that photo do not look like they can't be moved. If there are other babies then maybe they are hooked up to machines? Even then, babies hooked to machines can be moved. I believe Israel will help with that.

HAMAS does not want that so it's in their best interest to say the babies can't be moved. I don't believe anything the hospital reps or doctors might say. They are all linked to HAMAS. Weather there is a headquarters under the hospital or not is really not the biggest issue. We know HAMAS is in charge of the ministry of health. They run the hospitals and so anyone speaking on behalf of one of the hospitals has reason to lie in order to protect HAMAS or to protect themselves from HAMAS.

What's really sad is that other news sources may be getting their information from less than accurate sources.
This information is then blasted to the world and people are angry because they believe every word.
