European Commission to triple humanitarian aid for Gaza

Lili Bayer

The European Commission announced this afternoon that it will triple humanitarian aid for Gaza. The move comes after the EU faced criticism for conflicting messaging from its senior leadership.

The commission’s president, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke with the UN secretary general, António Guterres, today, the commission said.

“The commission will immediately increase the current humanitarian aid envelope foreseen for Gaza by €50m,” Von der Leyen said in a statement. “This will bring the total to over €75m.”

The commission chief added:

“We will continue our close cooperation with the UN and its agencies to ensure that this aid reaches those in need in the Gaza Strip. The commission supports Israel’s right to defend itself against the Hamas terrorists, in full respect of international humanitarian law. We are working hard to ensure that innocent civilians in Gaza are provided support in this context.”

Israel’s national security advisor: ‘ Hamas will not rule Gaza’

Israel’s national security advisor said Saturday that it needs to “eliminate” Hamas and its “military and governmental capabilities” so that “there is no way for them to resurrect from it.”

“It will take months before we can say how this will happen, but Hamas will not rule Gaza,” Tzachi Hanegbi said.

Speaking of the Israeli hostages held in Gaza, he said, “We won’t stop until we know what happened to them and do whatever we can to bring them back.”

Hanegbi also said that when it came to its intelligence failure ahead of the attacks and protecting its citizens, “We failed and no one thinks differently, and it will be investigated, but all efforts now are for war

It concluded that the soldiers have "a strong emphasis on a substantial ground operation".

Agree. The goal has not changed for centuries for the radical Islamist factions.

This radical goal has never had anything to do with... humanitarian. It seems impossible to live among them or have them as your neighbor. I'm not sure how the state of Israel has survived. :(

Hanegbi says Israel has ‘passed messages’ to Hezbollah warning it not to join war

Responding to concerns that Hezbollah may open a northern front in Israel’s ongoing war, National Security Council chief Tzachi Hanegbi says Israel has “passed messages” to discourage the terror group from joining its fellow Iran-backed proxy Hamas in war against Israel.

“Our goal is to not to be pulled into a two-front war,” Hanegbi says.

“We think Hezbollah won’t invite the destruction of Lebanon, because it won’t be less than that if there’s a war there, because that’s what there will be” should Hezbollah open the northern front, Hanegbi says.

Hezbollah fighters have made incursions into Israeli territory and the terror organization has taken responsibility for shelling Israel’s north in the week since Hamas’s devastating terror attack.

Lebanon to submit formal complaint to UN for killing of journalist

Lebanon is submitting a formal complaint to the UN Security Council over what it says is "Israel's deliberate killing" of Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah, who is also a Lebanese citizen.

Abdallah was killed in southern Lebanon on Friday when missiles fired from the direction of Israel struck a group of journalists, witnesses at the scene have said, according to a report published by Reuters.

Abdallah was working close to the Lebanese-Israeli border, where clashes between militants and the Israeli military have intensified.

Six other journalists, including from Reuters, Al Jazeera and Agency France-Presse, were wounded.

An Israeli army spokesperson later said that the army was “deeply regretful for the incident” and that it was “actively investigating it”.

European Union to triple humanitarian aid for Gaza

Sofia Bettiza
BBC News, Brussels

The European Commission said it will immediately triple humanitarian assistance for Gaza.

That's an extra 50m (£43m) euros in humanitarian aid - for a total of 75m euros. The EU is already the largest foreign donor to the Palestinian people.

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, said she is working in close cooperation with the UN to ensure that this aid reaches those in need in the Gaza strip.

"This tripling of EU humanitarian assistance will help ensure that civilians in Gaza can be provided with the basic necessities required," said Janez Lenarèiè, the Commissioner for Crisis Management.

"It is essential that safe and unrestricted access for humanitarian aid is ensured."

'We joined hundreds of cars heading south in Gaza. It was chaos'

Rushdi Abu Alouf
BBC News, Nasser Hospital, Khan Yunis

After Israel ordered evacuation of the northern part of the Gaza Strip, I had to take my family from Gaza City to Khan Yunis.

We joined people using cars, trucks or walking 5-6 kms to the main road. There were hundreds of cars, motorcycles, camels and sheep. It was chaotic. There was a convoy 10km (6 miles) long. For me to drive 10km it took me about three hours. It normally takes 15 minutes.

The scenes in Khan Yunis I have witnessed are really tragic. People are sleeping in public spaces, hundreds of thousands of people in schools and hundreds of thousands of people went to hospitals to take refuge.

Even though it is the second largest city in Gaza, Khan Yunis is a small city with 400,000 people. More than a million more have taken refuge here.

The city was already struggling after one week of Israel's blockade without water, electricity and internet. This city was already exhausted.

Doctors here told me that medicine is running out, they are trying to manage with very little fuel left and a very small amount of life-saving kits.

It is not only the newcomers. I talked to a man at the hospital today. Back in 2014, his house was destroyed by the Israeli strikes and he managed to rebuild it. Now it is damaged again and he is taking refuge in the hospital.

Palestinian Health Minister: 15 medical centers damaged, two hospitals stopped providing service, 28 health staff killed

Fifteen medical centers have been damaged, two hospitals have stopped providing service, 28 health staff were killed and dozens more injured, according to Palestinian Health Minister Mai Al-Kaila.

The two hospitals that stopped providing service are Beit Hanoun Hospital and Al-Durrah Children’s Hospital, Al-Kaila said.

"The Israeli occupation forces daily threaten to evacuate hospitals in the Gaza Strip, which is a clear threat to the lives of hundreds of sick and wounded people, including Al-Durrah Hospital for Children, which was evacuated yesterday after being bombed with internationally banned white phosphorus bombs, and before that, Beit Hanoun Hospital, which also stopped working as a result of the Israeli bombing," Al-Kaila said. He added that 23 ambulances were also damaged and out of service.

A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces has denied claims that the country is using white phosphorus munitions in Gaza.

IDF says Hamas is preventing civilians from evacuating northern Gaza

Hamas roadblocks set up in Gaza on October 14, 2023, according to the IDF. (IDF)
Hamas roadblocks set up in Gaza on October 14, 2023, according to the IDF. (IDF)

The Israel Defense Forces says the Hamas terror group is preventing Palestinians from evacuating the northern part of the Gaza Strip.

The IDF has warned Gaza residents in the northern part of the Strip to evacuate amid preparations for an expected ground incursion or a stepped-up offensive. The area is home to about 1 million people.

The military says it has identified hundreds of thousands of Palestinians moving south, but many are getting stuck in traffic caused by Hamas roadblocks.

“Hamas is making it difficult for the residents of the Gaza Strip to move on main roads, and prevents the passage of vehicles on these roads,” the IDF says.

The military releases a video showing heavy traffic in the Gaza Strip, which it says is caused by Hamas roadblocks.

Are ground operations (such as this) best done in darkness or daylight??
