I wish  fervently it were that simple. But when the enemy deliberately hides behind innocent lives (hence the term "human shield"), it's not feasible...:(

I think we've made a lot of progress in recent years in avoiding killing of innocent civilians. We spend a lot of money on defense, we can do it! I have faith that Americans can update our approach and mentality and teach other nations to do the same. Many already do understand it.

I hope so!
Also, why allow this huge march?

I think the long-term solution to this is going to have to be a two-state agreement.

Getting rid of the current HAMAS is not going to restore peace between Israel and the Palestinian territories. No neighboring states are willing to provide refugee cities or assimiliation, specifically Jordan and Egypt. They have their own battles with the world of radical Islamic terrorism and do not need to expend additional resources only to end up with an additional viper's nest of radical terrorists.

I cannot fathom how the current Gaza could be made habitable even if HAMAS was truly extinguished.

Israel-Hamas war live updates: Gaza hit with more shelling as Israel defends evacuation order (nbcnews.com)

Rockets fired in Gaza's direction

NEAR THE ISRAEL-GAZA BORDER — A volley of rockets fired in the direction of Gaza just streaked across the sky to the north of Gaza here.

The streaks almost sound like a storm moving in, with a steady flow of thunder-like booms followed by a siren and more booms in the sky.

There is notably increased activity in this region compared to yesterday, including more checkpoints on the roads. Many roads are now blocked off.

The Israeli military said all other roads in this area towards Gaza are fully closed to non-military. There are no civilians in this area, just IDF troops.

There are a number of military tanks and vehicles in this area — stopping for fuel and then heading out in the direction of Gaza.

I still believe we should try to preserve cities, homes, infrastructure, etc. Condemn and punish the criminals, not the country nor the citizens. Treating these situations as a war against a nation of people only breeds hostility, divisiveness and aggression. I still prefer it the old fashioned way with peace talks and helping countries rebuild. It's amazing to see how Europe, including Germany, was allowed to recover so productively after WWII. Same with Japan. Our grandparents and gr-grandparents saw things differently and they were right. JMO
Terrorism is harder because terrorists aren't "nations". Still I believe there is hope for improvement and learning. For centuries war was fought between nations. Treaties were signed. International law became a thing in the 20th Century (maybe even before that) . Terrorists don't play by the rules, so it has changed.

US embassy calls on citizens to ‘take advantage’ of charter flights ‘while they’re available’

The US Embassy in Israel calls on American citizens who are seeking to leave to move quickly to access charter flights “while they are available.”

The embassy says Israelis looking to leave should come to the airport tomorrow and “look for a table with a US flag,” noting that flights will not be to the US, and that people will not be able to choose their destinations.

Travelers cannot bring pets, and will have to first fill out the crisis intake form on its website before coming to the airport, it says.

Sadly, it looks like it would be a three state solution. Gaza as one state, West Bank?Golan Hts) as the other. Gaza and West Bank aren't getting along right now.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I meant treating it as a police action with the necessary tools, but with the intent of capturing/neutralizing the bad guys instead of killing innocent civilians.
The terrorist attack on Israel slaughtered innocent civilians and it has resulted in military action by Israel. Local police have no way of knowing who is a Hamas terrorist, and who is not.

I apologize for my comment being misunderstood. I'm not referring to beat police, LE. I'm referring to a style of military interaction that is focused on different goals and tactics than traditional military combat. It's ok. Nevermind.

A police action is a military response without a declaration of war. It has nothing to do with local law enforcement.

Live updates: Israel-Hamas war rages as Palestinian death toll in Gaza rises (cnn.com)

Watchdogs and international officials warn of misinformation on social media about Israel-Hamas war

As the Israel-Hamas war reaches the end of its first week, millions have turned to platforms including TikTok and Instagram in hopes of comprehending the brutal conflict in real time.

Trending search terms on TikTok in recent days illustrate the hunger for front line perspectives: From "graphic Israel footage" to "live stream in Israel right now," internet users are seeking out raw, unfiltered accounts of a crisis they are desperate to understand.

For the most part, they are succeeding, discovering videos of tearful Israeli children wrestling with the permanence of death alongside images of dazed Gazans sitting in the rubble of their former homes.

But the same demand for an intimate view of the war has created ample openings for disinformation peddlers, conspiracy theorists and propaganda artists — influences regulators and researchers now warn pose a dangerous threat to public debates about the war.

One recent TikTok video, seen by more than 300,000 users and reviewed by CNN, promoted conspiracy theories about the origins of the Hamas attacks, including false claims they were orchestrated by the media.

TikTok is hardly alone. One post on X, formerly Twitter, was viewed more than 20,000 times and flagged as misleading by London-based social media watchdog Reset for purporting to show Israelis staging civilian deaths for cameras.

This week, European Union officials sent warnings to TikTok, Facebook and Instagram's parent Meta, YouTube and X, highlighting reports of misleading or illegal content about the war on their platforms and reminding the social media companies they could face billions of dollars in fines if an investigation later determines they violated EU content moderation laws.

US and UK lawmakers have also called on the platforms to ensure they are enforcing their rules against hateful and illegal content.

Oh I agree; I just wish that Hamas placed their military assets outside of residential areas etc. It's truly sad, but those things like rockets on rooftops etc are a direct threat to the safety and security of Israel. Their government has an obligation to protect them from those. There are targetting protocols that are taken to ensure that risk to civilians and civilian infrastructure is minimized in as much as possible (we've come a long way since the days of carpet bombing in WW2) by using 'smart' weapons, retrofitting JDAMs etc.

It is a war against Hamas, their infrastructure and their heirarchy (Israel has clearly stated such). Hamas clearly does not wish to seek peace with Israel --- it's in their mandate. Until such time as that sentiment turns, Israel must act to protect itself. When Hamas vows their very destruction to non-existence each and every day as they've been doing for years, there simply is no peace to keep and Israel must be o constant vigilence and able to respond to threats to their national security.

Germany to start evacuating its citizens from Israel on military planes

The German army will start evacuating its citizens from Israel with military airplanes.

German news agency dpa reports that two A400M military transports are on their way from Germany to Israel tonight and further flights are planned, according to the German defense ministry.

More than 100,000 residents of Israel hold dual German and Israeli citizenship.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that he has spoken today with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

According to the PMO, all three European leaders “expressed their unswerving support for Israel.”

A long time ago while talking about self defense with an Israeli soldier, (I swear lol), I was told that one effective method/weapon IDF is famous for/knows how to use and implement is the weapon of “light”. I learned that at night, if a predator approaches, a very bright flash of light right up in the face of the attacker can be quite effective. Ever since then I have always carried a big camping flash light thing and have practiced the maneuver.

Not that this answers the great question of whether they will choose to invade in the darkness or light lol. They would presumably have night goggles, etc. of course, but I would think the ground invasion would occur in both the hours of darkness and light, as who knows how long this ground invasion will last.

Just wanted to share about IDF and their known use of “light” as a weapon. I’m curious now what kind of documentation exists about this specifically, if any.
Light as a defense is super interesting (on many levels). Thanks for sharing that and giving some food for thought.
