Hamas releases first video of hostage

BBC
The video shows a young woman speaking Hebrew who identifies herself as Maya Shem. A spokesman for the family said they agreed these pictures could be shown.

A video showing one of the hostages taken from Israel and being held in Gaza has been released by Hamas’ armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades.

It is the first hostage video released by Hamas after the militant group attacked Israel on 7 October. Israel says 199 people are being held captive in Gaza.

In the video, a young woman says her name is Maya Shem, she is 21 years old and from Shoham, in Israel.

She says that she was taken hostage by Hamas at a party in Israel and pleads for her release.

It includes footage of the same woman receiving treatment for an arm injury.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Maya was abducted by Hamas and say they are in touch with her family, according to a statement.

"At this time, we are deploying all intelligence and operational measures for the return of all hostages", including Maya, it reads.

The BBC does not generally publish hostage videos.

A spokesman for the family said they agreed pictures from the video could be shown.

Israeli intelligence head addresses lack of attack warning

The head of Shin Bet, Israel's intelligence agency, has taken responsibility for the lack of early warning about Hamas's attack on 7 October.

In a statement to agency members, Ronen Bar said: “Despite a series of actions we carried out, unfortunately on Saturday we were unable to generate a sufficient warning that would allow the attack to be thwarted.

"As the one who heads the organisation, the responsibility for this is on me."
He said there will be time for investigations but "now, we are fighting".

Takes a big person to say those words.

A few posts back, I heard them speaking on the Gaza City live stream. There was shouting, a woman crying, children, music, praying, and banging. I wondered what they were saying?
Then I clicked on the YouTube icon and saw someone being strangled.

Then, I looked and saw that it was an old Iranian movie called The Cow (the director was killed yesterday), so I looked up his movies and started watching one.

I always have lots of browser tabs open.

So, what I thought was possibly Gazans was just coincidentally audio from another browser tab. (It wasn't even Arabic it was Farsi)

So, I didn't hear Gazans or Hamas or anyone speaking....
Just a strange coincidence....

I admit, I only read the headlines....

My comment refered to troops on the ground and US dollars, equipment, etc to support Israel. We had an entire delegation, zipping back and forth for days trying to help.

Yes, Britain has stepped up, they are always in the lead, as well as the US.

It's commendable for the humanitarian dollars, I hope it doesn't land in terrorist hands.

Moo
Our little national 35 million population does what we can, but we've never failed to be be your side - (sometimes even there first) in conflict zones, hurricanes (Hurricane Andrew recovery for me), 9/11, Somalia, Afghanistan (as was I a couple of times) etc.

Iran warns of ‘pre-emptive’ attack on Israel in ‘the coming hours’

Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, warned that a “preemptive action” against Israel could be expected “in the coming hours”, signalling a potential escalation in the conflict.

In a live broadcast to state television, Amirabdollahian said “the leaders of resistance groups will not allow the Zionist regime to act in any way it likes in Gaza” while referencing his meeting with the head of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, on Saturday.

He added:

The possibility of pre-emptive action by the resistance front is expected in the coming hours.
“All options are open and we cannot be indifferent to the war crimes committed against the people of Gaza,” he said. He added:

If we don’t defend Gaza today, tomorrow we have to defend against these (phosphorus) bombs in the children’s hospital of our own country.
Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of using white phosphorus munitions in its military operations in Gaza and Lebanon last week. Israel has denied it used white phosphorus.

Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi said earlier on Monday that time was running out to reach a political solution and warned against the expansion of the Israel-Hamas war to other fronts.

...

RSBM,

I'm really not liking the bruising I'm seeing on her upper chest & lower neck, the split lower lip etc. I have my fears that this young lady has not exactly been 'treated humanely' by her captors.

I am not seeing the bruising, but in her photos/selfies on SM, her lip looks the same- her bottom lip has a deep crease.

Putin says Russia is ready to help end Israel-Hamas conflict by diplomatic means, Kremlin says

From CNN's Mariya Knight

Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict in calls with several leaders on Monday, the Kremlin said.

Putin spoke with leaders from Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Syria, Iran and Egypt.
The Russian president told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Russia is ready to help end Israeli-Hamas conflict peacefully, by diplomatic means, according to a Kremlin readout of the call.

"Fundamental readiness to continue carrying out purposeful work in the interests of ending the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation and achieving a peaceful settlement through political and diplomatic means was confirmed," it read.
During his conversation with the five leaders on Monday, Putin blamed the current escalation in the Middle East on “the long-term stagnation” in settling the conflict, Kremlin readout said.

The Russian president emphasized during the calls “the severity of the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the need to lift the blockade of the sector for the immediate delivery of medicine, food and other vital aid,” according to the Kremlin.

A meeting between US secretary of state Antony Blinken and Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his war cabinet in Tel Aviv has now passed the six-hour mark.

Blinken is scheduled to return to Amman, Jordan, on Monday night.

Here we go again !!! Where are all our allies? Why are we, the US responsible for troops and financial support for BOTH side? We're gonna send troops while negotiating an aid package to Gaza.

Moo...
I think there are many helping. I often wonder if the US announcing everything it's doing is part of the plan.. "show of force", looking good in the world, etc. I know often US troops are all over in places that we never hear about. I have a husband and a child in the US Army and there are always things going on that isn't publicly announced or even known by the average person serving in the military. So when things are announced, I usually assume it's for some public show or something.

Some things that come to mind for support roles would be helping repair infrastructure.. restoring water, power, bridges, roads, etc Medical support, security type stuff, intel, and so many other roles that are non combat, but 100% necessary to get things back up in running in areas that have been damaged. I'd be willing to bet other countries have offered the same or similar and we just might not hear about it.

I also have thought some of our elite teams might be on the ground already helping with hostage rescue or things we might never hear about.

That would be awful!

I don't believe Iran has attacked a western power in modern history.

Iran will basically be committing suicide by doing this.

I think it is a mistake to listen to analysts that view this under the typical view of mid east politics. This is viewed differently in Israel. Existential. It doesn't matter what is shown now. The elimination of Hamas is the goal. If Iran chooses to join in, that is their choice and the entire region is at war. As long as Israel focuses on Gaza, response and condemnation from other Arab nations will not rise above condemnation. The status quo of Gaza wasn't sustainable anyway. Hamas is a cancer.
I think that's completely natural and to be expected, and Hamas is a huge threat and must be eliminated.

IMO tho, there's a risk that any perception that 'it'll be over by Hanukkah' is seriously misjudged.

Doesn't it always turn out, the enemy isn't so simple to eliminate and there's stalemates, or it becomes a much bigger war, reluctant allies are drawn in, thousands of military recruits are killed, the economy gets run into the ground, people move out of the country, war begins to feel interminable and citizens just want it to be over and yet there's repeated failures in peace accords, etc, etc.
