Israel-Hamas war live updates: U.S. intel says it has ‘high confidence’ Israel did not cause Gaza hospital blast (nbcnews.com)

Talks with Hamas about the release of hostages 'progressing positively'

Talks about the possible release of hostages among Hamas, the Qataris and the Israelis, with U.S. involvement, are continuing, and freeing a larger number of captives is being discussed.

“Talks are now underway for the release of a larger group. There has not been a break down. They are progressing positively,” a diplomat with knowledge of the talks said, noting there has been "no breakthrough yet."

Hamas has so far released four hostages. Israel's military said it still holds more more than 220. Americans are also unaccounted-for.

Intelligence shared with the United States suggests a small cell of Hamas operatives planning the deadly surprise attack on Israel communicated via a network of hardwired phones built into the network of tunnels underneath Gaza over a period of two years, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The phone lines in the tunnels allowed the operatives to communicate with one another in secret and meant they could not be tracked by Israeli intelligence officials, the sources told CNN.

During the two years of planning, the small cell operating in the tunnels used the hardwired phone lines to communicate and plan the operation but stayed dark until it was time to activate and call on hundreds of Hamas fighters to launch the October 7 attack, the sources said.

They avoided using computers or cell phones during the two-year period to evade detection by Israeli or US intelligence, the sources said.

“There wasn’t a lot of discussion and back and forth and coordination outside of the immediate area,” one of the sources said…

One of the sources said some of the training above ground was observed but did not ring major alarm bells. The thinking was, “oh they always train people like this. It didn’t look different,” the source said.

Israel was aware that Palestinian militants had been using hardwired communication systems prior to the October attack.

It encountered what appeared to be a similar kind of communication system when the Israeli military raided the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank this summer, according to an Israeli official. When Israeli troops moved in as part of what was dubbed “Operation Home and Garden,” the Israel Defense Forces discovered secure, hardwired communication lines and closed-circuit surveillance cameras to give advance warning of Israeli troop movements.

It's ironic that going "old school" worked so well for them, imo.

This here is a good read. This site provides statistics since 2008. Its crazy to see the two numbers

Data on casualties

It's even crazier to try to understand Hamas terrorists depriving poor Gaza citizens of basic necessities (food, water, better living conditions)... so they can build tunnels, amass weapons to brutally murder Israeli citizens. Even the Hamas big-wigs live in luxury while their "people" do without. It's more than crazy... it's insane.

Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist organization, has a net worth that places it as the second richest terror group globally, with approximate finances of around $1 billion. The Islamic State, with some $2 billion dollars at its disposal, is the only group outranking Hamas in terms of wealth. This article delves into the intricacies of the Hamas net worth, the sources of this enormous wealth, and how it is utilized or misused.

A significant portion of Hamas's funds is diverted towards financing terrorist activities. For instance, funds earmarked for the general welfare and infrastructure of the Palestinian populace are often used to compensate terrorists in Israeli jails. The compensation is based on the severity of their crimes, with those serving up to 3 years in prison receiving $400 per month, and those with at least 30 years in prison receiving $3,400 per month

Despite the considerable Hamas net worth, a considerable portion of the Palestinian population continues to live in poverty. Unemployment rates in the West Bank and Gaza are about 30%, and approximately 60% of the Palestinian population lives under the international poverty line of $2 per day. This discrepancy suggests a significant misuse and misdirection of the funds Hamas controls.

I've not seen a single poster on this forum deny the atrocities of the horrific Hamas attack on Israel on the 7th.

What journalists have expressed is their frustration in trying to verify the validity of propaganda coming from both sides AFTER the war was declared. Photos and videos can be edited and altered.

JMO
I guess journalists could just NOT report things they can't verify. They all want to be first and to have a story. Waiting until things are verified would prevent the spread of many false things, but they can't help themselves. They don't have to publish anything.. they have a choice and they choose to publish it and then make it someone else's fault?

From the comments made by Sec. Blinken earlier, a pause is much shorter and would allow humanitarian aid to reach Gaza hospitals, etc.
Israel doesn't seem to care.
JMO

The largest provider of humanitarian support in the Gaza Strip said it would be forced to cease operations in the enclave by Wednesday night if it doesn’t receive fuel, putting desperately needed aid for the strip at risk amid intensifying Israeli airstrikes.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency said that without the additional fuel it would be unable to pick up and distribute any incoming aid that enters Gaza, affecting residents across the enclave, including the 600,000 people sheltering at its facilities.

The warning comes amid growing international pressure for Israel to do more to protect civilians in Gaza ahead of a possible ground invasion in response to the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7 in which the group killed 1,400 people and kidnapped at least 222, according to Israeli authorities.
So a pause is a short duration ceasefire.

Hamas will take advantage of that break to cause more death and destruction IMO.

What I don't understand is why U.S. intelligence is mentioned as being caught "flat-footed" on Oct. 7th. Is the U.S. in some way responsible for Israel's intelligence? I honestly don't know.

It offers new insight into why Israel and the US were caught so flat-footed by the Hamas attack, which saw at least 1,500 fighters pouring across the border into Israel in an operation that killed at least 1,400 Israelis.

Here's what they usually get for dead Israelis:

Under Palestinian Authority law, every terrorist who is killed attacking Israel is defined as a “Martyr” whose family is immediately rewarded by the PA with a 6,000 shekels ($1,511) grant and a 1,400 ($353) per month allowance for life.

This means each family of the 1,500 dead Hamas terrorists who invaded Israel will receive 7,400 shekels for this first month. Families of those terrorists who were married and had children will receive even more. The PA will pay at least 11,100,000 shekels ($2,789,430) this month as a reward for participating in last week’s murders and atrocities against Israeli civilians.

In addition, the 50 captured Hamas terrorist murderers will receive monthly salaries in prison starting at 1,400 shekels/month which will eventually rise to 12,000 shekels/month. Terrorists who are married and have children will receive even higher salaries. This month these newly arrested terrorists will receive at least 70,000 shekels ($17,590).

The Palestinian Authority’s legislation and allocations of monthly salaries and benefits rewarding imprisoned and released terrorists, and the families of “Martyrs,” amount to $300 million annually. This financial reward clearly demonstrates the PA’s institutional commitment to sponsoring terror against Israel.
Any future peace will be brought about by the children.

So, any resoloution needs to begin with putting kids and their welfare at the top of the priority list.

UNRWA: Funded to the tune of 1.6 bllion US dollars per year by donor nations.

UNRWA Schools:
They have an excellent reputation with their students achieving high marks in grading, testing and exams. Lest there be any doubt of their success at teaching. +95% in the IB Program.

UNRWA Teachers: Come from the local communities within the Host Nations (HN) where the schools are situated (Gaza, Jordan, Egypt, Syria & Lebanon), with priorty for hiring being member of the Palestinian Refugee population (see Official UNRWA Teacher Job Listing posted immediately below:
UNRWA Curriculum: From the link immediately above:
----- Responsibilities:
- enrichment the host country's curriculum, where appropriate, to the competencies of students and achieve UNRWA learning goals and values in line with UNRWA Curriculum Framework.
----- UNRWA Curriculum Framework: Math, Geography, Social Sciences, Reading Comprehension etc etc
So what's the problem???

Of course, the issue is that "the host country's curriculum" is what is taught in UNRWA's Gaza Schools provided students achieve the learning goals and values outlined in the UNRWA curriculum framework.

In Gaza, the HN curriculum does include Math, Geography, Social Sciences and Reading Comprehension so is in alignment with the framework ... perhaps.

Well, the UNWATCH & impact-se Report linked below that was presented to the US Congress on 14 March 2023, and submitted to the United Nations details:
(Linked here: https://unwatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/2023-Report-UNRWA.pdf )

Geography:
Test Question:

5. The Zionist occupation works on the Judaization of the education in Jerusalem.
The answer: In order to erase its Arab-Islamic identity and to fabricate the geography and history by imposing Zionist curriculum
Final Project: Maps of Arab Nations and "The Fertile Triangle" with photos uploaded to UNRWA Facebook of students who achieved excellent results along with photos of their 'projects'. See pages 70-73 of above.
-----
This Telegram group for the 5th grade, class 9, 2022-2023 was created for 5th graders at UNRWA’s Al-Zaytun Elementary School in the Gaza Strip.158The group’s description states that it is intended for fifth grade students and their teachers, and that all educational materials created by UNRWA teachers can be downloaded in this group.
---------- UNRWA teacher Hadeel Medi posted to the group a photo of a classroom blackboard displaying a map of the Fertile Crescent countries that erases Israel—a UN member state—labeling the entire territory Palestine. At the same time, the map names other present-day countries formed at around the same time as Israel, such as Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Jordan and shows their borders. Students stand in front of their mapping projects in which Israel does not exist. Israeli cities are not included on ther maps.

Social Studies: UNRWA 6th grade Social Studies summary uploaded to Hamid Library Facebook Group on September 4, 2022. The document’s cover page contains the name of the Al-Rimal Middle School for Girls A. It also lists the names of the teacher who authored it Tahani Al-Luh, the principal Bahira Abu Hamda, the vice principal Amina Al-Tabatibi, and the supervisor educational specialist Farid.
----- A summary of a lesson titled Surface of the Earth contains information about Palestine—its size, mountains and lakes—completely ignoring the existence of Israel, a UN Member state. For example, the size of Palestine is listed as 27,027 square kilometers, which was the size of the British Mandate after 1922 and encompasses all the territory of today’s Israel, West Bank, and Gaza.
Lesson 2 Fill In The Blank Test:

Second lesson—Surface of the EarthFill the gaps:
- The area of Palestine is (27,027 km2)
- There are two plains in Palestine (Coastal plains and inner plains)
- The coastal plains [of Palestine] stretch along the coast of the (Mediterranean Sea)
- ... (Edited to shorten by me)
- Palestine borders from the north (Lebanon and Syria), from the east (Jordan), from the west (the Mediterranean Sea), and from the south (Egypt)

History (6th Grade):
----- In this UNRWA-created teaching material, 6th grade students are expressly taught that Israel falsifies, forges and steals Palestinian history and archaeology to annihilate and erase Palestinian heritage and history. For example, in a lesson about the history of Palestine, students are taught that “The Zionist Occupation gave its settlements Canaanite names to steal Palestinian history and heritage, and to falsify it.”
----- This UNRWA-created 6th grade social studies booklet demonizes Israel as the “Zionist occupation,” accuses it of taking over and exploiting Palestinian resources and stealing relics in order to destroy Palestinian heritage and to “falsify facts and fabricate a forged history” that “corresponds with its goals.”

Grammar:

This 9th grade UNRWA-created Islamic education exercise teaches students that if they neglect jihad, God will curse them. One of the exercises requests students to complete a sentence about the consequences of neglecting jihad.

The correct answer presented in the material is: “The punishment of he who neglects jihad is that God curses him, blinds his eyesight, and deafens his hearing.”
Activity 7: Read the following paragraph, find the imperfect verbs and explain their mood: The homeland does not disregard the efforts of its sons who stay awake at night to protect it and sacrifice for it that which is most precious.
Translation Activity 3: Fill in the following blanks according to the instructions:…
3- Palestinians ---- [give] up their lives in sacrifice of their homeland (imperfect indicative verb with the letter Nun retained)

Reading Comprehension:
----- One of the photos posted in the school parents’ group on March 11, 2022 shows UNRWA students taking an exam of a second semester 9th Grade Arabic Language textbook. That exam consists of hateful, intolerant, and demonizing reading comprehension questions about the Israeli city of Safed. The questions demonize Jews and Israelis as “Zionist gangs” who “sank their fangs of hatred” into “her pure body,” referring to the Israeli city of Safed, which is clearly considered by the text to be part of Palestine. Indeed, the city is described as “one of the most beautiful Palestinian cities in the Galilee,” thereby erasing Israel’s sovereignty. The reading comprehension itself (pp. 22-25 of the textbook) employs violent imagery to demonize the pre-1948 Jews in Israel, including antisemitic motifs about greedy occupiers—“the occupiers and their greed.” According to the text, “Zionist gangs…destroyed and devastated the city...and performed extremely horrific massacres there, leaving only a few of its Arab inhabitants. The sight of the escape of many of them shakes the heart, leaving a bleeding wound in the body of the Palestinian people.” (photos of the pages of these "exams" as students taken them are included at link above).
----- This UNRWA-created 9th grade Arabic language reading comprehension exercise demonizes Israelis as callous killers with graphic imagery. The fictional story is about a “Zionist officer” who unjustly shoots to death a Palestinian fisherman in Gaza in front of his son for being late to shore after first cursing, punching and kicking the father and describes a “fountain of blood bursting from his chest” and states that the sand is colored in red by the blood that “embraced his falling, seawater drenched body.”Follow-up questions ask students about what the image “The fountain of blood bursting from his chest” means, why the father’s hands shook, and how the soldiers are described in the story.
The graphic text:
Be quiet! Listen to me: entering the sea is prohibited for a whole month.” This is what the Zionist officer said, standing unsteadily amidst his guards, who were armed with all kinds of torment. He chewed his decision with a freezing coldness, angering the sea, which erupted as a volcano. The beach and all that was in and on it disappeared, and between the decision makers photos of the young brothers emerged, as did the father’s gray hair, the fish nets which clung to the rocks, the seagulls playing on the waves, and the brevity of the winter fishing season. The rudder stick, which his father had seized out of fear for his son, leapt into his hand to be landed on the forehead of the decision maker. “Thirty days, you tyrant! One hour late means a month in your world?! Is the sea now a –” but the fountain of blood which erupted from his chest was faster than his question could be completed. The henna-stained sand embraced his falling, seawater drenched body. The iron cage was the first reason, in five years, he could not set out to sea and cast the fishnets.
The test questions to guage their reading comprehension:
1. What decision was made about the two men?
2. What does “he chewed his decision with a freezing coldness” mean?
3. What did Sa‘id remember when he heard the decision?
4. How did Sa‘id express his anger? What was his father’s position? How do we know?
5. “Thirty days, you tyrant!” is an expression which shows:
6. What is the question Sa‘id’s father did not finish?
7. “The fountain of blood which erupted from his chest”—what is the meaning of this image?
8. “The iron cage was the first reason…” what does “iron cage” refer to?

The Report:
Submission of the Report to the United Nations:
Presentation to US Congress 14 March 2023:

Unfortunately, the below HR is currently stalled on the House Floor as they are "Speaker-less"

Yes, you are correct - photos and videos can be altered and surely have. However countless journalists have seen with their own eyes the aftermath of what has occurred, and have reported the undeniable atrocities. Maybe before reporting any news, journalists should verify, verify and verify again before they rush to get a story out.
