Israel under growing pressure to trade Palestinian prisoners for Gaza hostages

National security expert and newspaper join families’ calls for trade of about 5,000 prisoners for hostages taken by Hamas

Israel’s government is facing a growing clamour to trade the estimated 229 hostages in Gaza for thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Families of the hostages gained prominent support on Sunday in their effort to persuade Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration to negotiate a swap with Hamas.

Giora Eiland, a former head of the Israeli National Security Council, and the newspaper Haaretz swelled the chorus of calls to exchange about 5,000 Palestinians – including Hamas militants – for the captives in Gaza.

Some relatives delivered that message in a blunt meeting with Netanyahu on Saturday in Tel Aviv, where they have set up a camp opposite the defence ministry.

On Sunday a delegation asked the president, Isaac Herzog, to keep the hostages top of the political agenda.

“We do not feel that the issue is a priority for the state,” said Jackie Levy, three of whose relatives have been abducted. The government had lapsed into petty politics and the president needed to be the “responsible adult”, she added. Relatives planned to release balloons with messages to the captives at a ceremony on Sunday night.

The intensifying assault on Gaza – where the death toll after three weeks of bombing has passed 8,000, according to the Hamas-run health ministry – added urgency to the appeals. In Rome, Pope Francis called for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.

International Criminal Court: 'Active investigations' into alleged war crimes committed in Israel, Gaza and West Bank

International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan has visited the Rafah border crossing this weekend and said that the ICC has “active investigations ongoing in relation to the crimes, allegedly committed in Israel on the 7th of October and also in relation to Gaza and the West Bank”.

Khan said:
It’s a moment of objectivity, a moment of quiet reflection and it needs to be a moment in which the international community and the international architecture built on the rubble of the second world war … ensure never again … abominations.
He also said:
We are independently looking at the situation in Palestine. We are looking at the events in Israel … We need cooperation. We need assistance. But we’re going to have the determination, the stamina and the professionalism to make sure we separate allegation from facts.
The prosecutor added:
There should not be any impediment to humanitarian relief supplies goin to children, to women and men, civilians. They are innocent. They have rights under international humanitarian law.

This is a very difficult situation. The hostages' families want their loved ones back immediately (especially not knowing what condition they're in, etc.). I get that. But, if there is a swap with Hamas, this will happen again. JMO

PM’s office says expects Russia to ensure safety of Israelis, Jews in Dagestan

The Prime Minister’s Office and Foreign Ministry say they are following events in Dagestan and “expect Russian law enforcement to maintain the safety of all Israeli citizens and Jews and to act with determination against rioters and wild incitement against Jews and Israelis.

“Israel takes a grave view of attempts to harm Israeli citizens and Jews anywhere,” they say.

Israeli Ambassador to Russia Alex Ben Zvi is working to ensure the safety of the plane passengers.

IDF spokesman: We’ll pursue Hamas’s Sinwar until we reach him

IDF Spokesman Hagari vows that the military will “pursue” Hamas’s Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar “until we reach him.”

He says “the population of Gaza is already talking about how Sinwar brought disaster upon them.”

“He is the man responsible for the destruction of Gaza, he thinks and acts like a murderer, who proved to the whole world that Hamas is worse than ISIS,” Hagari adds.

Video showing the crowd storming the runway at Makhachkala airport in #Dagestan looking for an incoming flight with “Israelis or Jews”. This is genuinely terrifying.

Russian Police have Zero Control of the Situation with these Terrorists at the “Flamingo” Hotel being able to go Room to Room searching for Israelis.

Omggg.

The crowd at the Makhachkala airport is attacking patrol cars

The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency has announced that Makhachkala International Airport in Dagestan has been Closed to any further Departures and Arrivals due to Rioters having Stormed the Runways, and that it will remain Closed until the “Situation Normalizes.”

Rioters are still attempting to find a way onto the RedWings Flight from Israel on the Tarmac at Makhachkala International Airport in Dagestan, while continuing to shout “Allahu Akbar” and raising the Palestinian Flag near the Plane.

So I see a lot of people, leaders, countries, protests about Israel needing to stop the bombing because it's harming innocent civilians, but where are the people pleading for HAMAS to release hostages, stop sending rockets to Israel, and to surrender.. leave their tunnels and surrender so all their innocent civilians won't be killed because Israel isn't after civilians, they are after HAMAS and their tunnels and weapons. HAMAS has the power to end this so why isn't anyone on TV asking for them to surrender?
This is something I’ve been thinking a lot about over the past days.

The only thing I can come up with is that the Israelis are civilized and reasonable people and Hamas is barbaric and unreasonable. A dog rescued from a dog fighting ring usually has to be put down, sadly, because there’s no retraining or reasoning. imo That’s the only analogy I can come up with and that’s why the world is attempting to reason with Israel. imo

Just a reason and not an excuse.

Waiting to hear from the UN and world leaders on this, before these Jewish and/or Israeli's are harmed in Russia.

. . . and women, too, as we see from watching the anti-Israel protests in the U.S., U.K. and around the world.

Middle East esalation at this point seems to be up to Iran.
Hopefully other Middle Eastern countries will be able to de-escalate the situation with Iran's proxies - Hezbollah and Hamas.

Not everyone wants peace, apparently.

Is this flight from Israel an Israeli airline? If so, do Israeli airlines have armed security on their flights?

That's true. But, what are these people afraid of exactly?
Probably a stupid, baseless conspiracy theory that spread like wildfire.

We see too much of this lately.
