It could be anything. People spread rumors and get crowds worked up.
It turned into a mass riot and Russia closed the airport until Nov 6th. Apparently, they are tearing up the entire airport.
This is in Dagestan, which is not well treated by Russia. They're rioting.
The region is considered to be volatile.

Any region in Russia is more or less volatile given that so much money is sent from the satrapies, oh, sorry, the governorships to the centers, Moscow and St. Petersburg. However, the population density falls sharply behind the Ural Ridge, so it is mostly Central Russia and republics that might be problematic.

Here is population density in Russia

Per this map, yes, Caucasus is the most volatile (densely populated and rather poor)

ETA: per capita income in Russian regions. Compare the population density with the economy and see for yourself

This Russian mob attack, I feel it deep in my bones.

My DNA is stirring. Maybe screaming.

One of my grandfathers was born in America. The other three were born during the time of the Russian Empire, under Czar Nicholas II. Actually one grandmother was born in Mielic, Poland (@Dotta) when it had a large but poor Jewish population.
My maternal grandparents were born in Kyiv (now Ukraine) and the other in a town that is now part of Belarus.
All three came over by different boats in 1915, to escape persecution in Russia by Cossacks, and oppression of the Jews in Poland.

They met and married in NYC.

A great-grandfather I never met was hung from a tree in Russia, hung by his Tallis, which is a kind of prayer shawl worn by orthodox Jewish men.

This savagery, to hunt the Jews wherever they may be, this time by a Russian ethnic group of Muslims, makes me hyper aware of what my grandparents lived through, over a century ago.

The Jewish part of Mielic in Poland was destroyed by the Nazis, long after my grandmother had left.

I was born in Manhattan and still live in NYC, and never did I think that in my lifetime, I as a Jew would be unsafe in my city, or witness the wholesale murder of Jewish civilians in Israel, PLUS mobs in countries in the former Soviet Union, AGAIN attacking the Jewish people.

@Charlot123 I had one student from the Caucasus, a Jewish boy, and he had a very different upbringing from any former Soviet Union Jew I’d ever met…they have a hardscrabble lifestyle and a warrior spirit.

These are torturous times.

Imo

I am sorry. :(

Again, I just have no words.

I'm not sure what rumor you're talking about.
Numerous articles have reported them saying they were there to kill Jews.
Seems pretty straight up.

I know a bit about the region. Considering that they have closed the airport for a week, I think there is more going on. I think they are rioting and revolting against the Russians. (They are not ethnic Russians. They are an ethnic minority in Russia)

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. There are too many real threats going on right now in Israel/Palestine and the rest of the ME than to dwell on this mob.

I don’t know who your student was, but besides Ashkenazi and Sephardim, there are many smaller groups of ethnic Jews, and while united by religion and by DNA, they may be extremely different and shaped by the cultures they grew up in. For example,

RSBM,

What!!?? No demand for Hamas to immediately release without condition all those hostages (war crime) and to allow foreigners and dual-citizens immediate right of passage out of Gaza through the Rafah gate? Impeding movement of civilians is also a war crime that is happening in Gaza right now. Nary a peep from the UN on that.

Hopefully I am doing this correct. Looks like this is in the West Bank? :(

Israeli Troops and Armored Vehicles are Storming the City of Jenin in the West Bank once again tonight, most likely to conduct Raids for the Arrest of Hamas and PIJ Members.

This one from Syria.

Syrian State Media is reporting that the Headquarters for the 112th Mechanized Brigade of the Syrian Army in the City of Nawa has been Attacked by Israeli Combat Aircraft which resulted in Significant Damage and Casualties.

Are you familiar with this population/region?
I was asking you to clarify which "conspiracy theory" or rumor you were referring to since I hadn't seen that mentioned in any news post coming out about this lynch mob.

But no, I am not at all familiar with this region. Following here and learning a ton though.

Perhaps the UN is also being intimidated by Hamas...

On Gedmatch, I often come up with 1/4 Georgian Jew. (I'm not and it's not likely due to marrying traditions )
I'm 1/2 Armenian, but that is one of the results that comes up in those Oracle 4. However, there are Georgian Jews and I once saw an Israeli movie that featured Georgian Jews.

sbm. Of course they know where they've put the hostages. To me this sounds like the Russian-Israeli citizens and likely many more hostages have already been murdered.
Don't forget that Gazan civilians also crossed into Israel after the main push of Hamas on 10/7 to loot and burn; they also took some hostages of their own back. I posted the footage in here from the security cameras at the Kibbutz' (from South First Responders) showing these actions.

It may very well be that Hamas has no idea where these ones ended up if they were amongst those taken by civilians. They'll need to undertake some heavy logistics to sort all that out and get some answers. I think that's also why the number of confirmed hostages keeps going up ... Hamas didn't take them all.

And the reason the crowd stormed the airport is because they heard a plane from Tel Aviv had just landed. So the crowd stormed the tarmac and began surrounding the deplaning passengers---demanding their passports. There are videos of the crowds doing so.

Bbm.
Pretty clear whom they're looking for ?
This is frightening.
Omo.

The UN is often a self-licking ice cream cone. I've done a few UN tours in paces that my nation sent peacekeepers to for decades. Every time we announced that our troops were pulling out our country's troops .... BOOM ... the fighting would start back up again to ensure the UN forces had to stay.

There's a whole economy built on having the UN in/on your fenceline.

Robert McNamara who was Secretary of the War during the Johnson Administration (LBJ) in the USA in Vietnam and called the Architect of the Vietnam War said he learned a lot from that war he'd never repeat. He wrote a book which turned into a documentary (won many awards) called "The Fog of War" and really is worthwhile watching. It can be seen on YouTube for free in 10 parts or you can get the whole Documentary there too. The #1 lesson he took away is "Proportionality" which Israel does NOT follow at all. As of this morning, it was reported they had 1400 deaths there and Gaza (mostly young people dead incl. doctors, women & children) over 8,000 dead - no proportionality! There will be only more and more hatred caused from these wars in the future generations. Read McNamara or watch the documentary.

Yes…my grandma lived in the Jewish community there, called a shtetl, which I know was later destroyed. I met another teacher several years ago, not Jewish, who told me she was born in Mielic. I was amazed because I didn’t know it was still a thriving city.

I have a Mielic Yizkor book, which is the remembrance of the town and the Jews who were later killed by the Nazis. Pictures of how it used to be in my grandma’s day.

@Charlot123
yes, this student was a Mountain Jew. He was ferocious and so was his father, whom I met at our Parent/Teacher conferences.

There are many people around here from the former Soviet Union. When I was a teenager in 1974 I marched for a campaign, “Save Soviet Jewry,” while they were still under Communist rule and religion was frowned upon.

But this one boy had an entirely different mindset and was quite a behavior problem! By now he is grown and I hope doing well.

My main point is how we are backsliding into a world where people easily and publicly are threatening Jews again.

Israel has no choice now but to defend and protect its people. By any means necessary.

IMO

“We got severed heads without bodies, that we needed to check the teeth”

“We saw elderly people whose skulls were crushed. There was no face left”

Hamas burned its Israeli victims so completely, some were identifiable only by their dental implants.

We will destroy Hamas, because we will never—ever—risk leaving it free to commit such atrocities again.

Ontario mom, they were, and planned.<modsnip> So if the mob gathered on hearing that a plane from Tel Aviv had landed, the net result was the inability for the passengers arriving from the Emirates to leave their plane for six hours, one Moscow Uzbek being in serious trouble, some Jewish guy staying in a local hotel miraculously avoiding peril. Of course, all stores in the airport were vandalized because this, looting, is holy since the people came loaded with energy and not to spend their time in vain. One day, all of this may end up gathering under the green banners of the Prophet, but this is usually the end, the organized phase, and before, to remember Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, “God forbid we see a Russian revolt, senseless and merciless!”
