I'm really trying to understand who controls the Gaza strip. I'm googling and learning, or at least trying. So does the Palestinians have other governing people or did Hamas take over everything? Do the people realize that Hamas is not helping them at all? Not everyone is the same, but if I were going to die in war, I would try to go down fighting. So this makes me sound like I have no compassion, I do. Really I do. Those people and hostages, oh my goodness. My heart aches for them. I'm just confused who's ruling the Gaza. Why aren't the people forming a stand. I don't know who to feel sorry for. My 18 year old daughter watched a video of a girl caught up there. Speaking of how she wants her home back and Israel started all of this. I don't even know what to tell her. . I guess I have to let her form her own opinion.? Remember, this is all just my opinion. I think we should try and get as many people to safety, hostages and others. Whoever wants to stay, ok stay. Destroy every single tunnel they have. Get rid of of every single pieces of crap that want to kill us. I don't even know if I even believe what I am saying. I probably sound like a crazy person. Don't hear anything about Ukraine anymore...barely. not a conspiracy theory person. But our world ?? I'm just going to do a lot praying.

I’m with you. I have a 31 year old daughter and I don’t know what to say to her. She thinks I am uneducated on the Palestine situation. On my side I have so much support for the Jewish people and all they have endured for thousands of years. Why do people hate them so much they want them erased from the earth. I just don’t get it. My daughter brings up that the young people in Gaza did not have a say in the elections that put Hamas in control of Gaza. True but they have been living and learning the Hamas ways. Are they victims? Hamas started this blood shed and now their people they govern are dying x100 or more. It’s all just a horrible situation. I’m sure others are having difficult conversations within their own families and I hate it.

snipped by me

I usually suggest to my daughter to do a Google search on the issue and she will find different viewpoints to consider before forming her own opinion. Depending on the subject, I also might comment that there are people in the world that will claim to be a part of whatever the trending social topic is just for likes. She used to believe all the TikTok "influencer journalists" conspiracy theories but quickly learned they were not a reliable source of information.

This conflict has been brewing for 100 years (starting after WW1, and coming to force after WW2 as my history post above explained).

This is another episode and, unfortunately, not the last.

Solution lies in diplomacy IMO.

But the KEY words are:
GOODWILL and COMPROMISE
(on both sides).

For the good of BOTH nations.
And future generations.

Will we see the resolution in our lifetime?

Who knows?
Miracles DO happen :)

My objective opinion

"I wish there were another way out of this.

"Israeli govt spokesman @EylonALevy says the situation in Gaza is "heartbreaking", adding that Israel wants to "see the fighting end, but it's only going to end with the end of Hamas".

Live: https://trib.al/lkf0Hd0

Israeli Government Spokesman Eylon Levy calls on the international community to help with civilian evacuations instead of 'criticising Israel's efforts to keep Gazan civilians safe from the consequences of their own leaders reckless actions'

We is often asked: what do we expect civilians in northern Gaza to do, who have not yet gotten out of harm's way?The answer is to get out of harm's way.The @IDF is securing a humanitarian corridor today 10:00-14:00 for civilians to move to south.

IDF says it has eliminated the head of Hamas's "industries and weaponry" in an overnight airstrike. The military says Muhsin Abu Zina was "one of the leaders of weapons production" for Hamas, and specialized in manufacturing "strategic weapons and rockets."

IDF releases new footage of troops operating in the Gaza Strip. It says that overnight, ground troops directed an aircraft to strike a Hamas anti-tank missile squad, and a squad responsible for launching rockets at Israel.

IDF footage shows a massive blast after a strike on a Hezbollah weapons depot in southern Lebanon last night

IDF says thousands of Palestinians continue to evacuate northern Gaza via a humanitarian corridor on Salah a-Din road, which is open between 10:00 and 14:00.

IDF says troops of the 7th Armored Brigade identified a number of Hamas operatives at an anti-tank launch position, which connects to a weapons depot via a tunnel. The troops called in an airstrike on the site. Some of the operatives who managed to escape to the roof of the building were hit in a second airstrike.

Separately, the IDF says it struck a mortar-launching squad in the Gaza Strip.

IDF says an anti-tank missile was fired from Lebanon at troops in the Dovev area, lightly wounding two soldiers. Two more rockets were fired at the Shtula and Yiftah area. The IDF says it is responding with artillery shelling at the sources of the fire.Separately, the IDF says it struck a number of anti-tank launch positions in southern Lebanon.

FACT: The IDF is facilitating the supply of humanitarian aid to Gazan civilians.Learn about our most recent efforts:
efforts1.jpg efforts2.jpg efforts3.jpg

(Video in the tweet above states that over 900,000 Gazans have already evacuated)

Due to the substantial response, the @IDF has extended the evacuation corridor by an extra hour, until 15:00 today, allowing many more Gazans to move south for their safety.

Maybe you should ask your daughter where she gets her news at and try to see what you think of the reporting from those outlets. And that could give you an opportunity to share compelling articles you have found with her. This is just an idea.

I think a lot of people are getting information from TikTok and I don’t think it’s helpful. I’m not saying your daughter is one of those people, but it does seem to be a problem.

I strongly believe Israel has to get rid of Hamas. Israel cannot proceed with any peaceful solution when terrorists that want to wipe Israel off the map are governing on the other side. And don’t forget that these terrorists still have Israel’s hostages. Netanyahu has said that his terms for a cease-fire are the release of the hostages. I think the bombing could end today if the hostages were released, IMO. So this in my opinion is a necessary war and in war there are casualties, horrible as that is. I believe Israel is doing everything it can to minimize civilian casualties, even as Hamas tries to maximize civilian casualties. You can also remind your daughter that the casualty count in Gaza is coming from Hamas and is itself an unreliable number. You could show your daughter articles cited this thread about how Israel is guiding thousands of civilians waving white flags to safety, even as Hamas tries to block these people from leaving.

Israel deserves to be criticized for what it has gotten wrong throughout the history of this overall conflict (no government is above criticism), but in my opinion, there is no hope for peace as long as Hamas is in power and October 7 proves that. Remember that there was a cease-fire in place October 6, yet October 7 still happened.

All IMO.

Hamas members tell NYT they hope for ‘permanent’ war, do not care about running Gaza

In interviews with the New York Times, Hamas higher-ups say their goal with the attacks on October 7 was to “change the entire equation” and renew attention on the Palestinian cause, in the words of Khalil al-Hayya, a member of the terror group’s politburo in Qatar.

[...]

Al-Hayya and other Hamas members quoted dismiss the idea that they want to govern Gaza, instead expressing support for endless conflict.

“I hope that the state of war with Israel will become permanent on all the borders, and that the Arab world will stand with us,” Hamas media consultant Taher El-Nounou is quoted telling the paper.

“Hamas’s goal is not to run Gaza and to bring it water and electricity and such,” says al-Hayya.

“This battle was not because we wanted fuel or laborers,” he adds. “It did not seek to improve the situation in Gaza. This battle is to completely overthrow the situation.”

Qatar brokering deal to release 10-15 hostages for pause in fighting

Qatar is mediating negotiations between Israel and Hamas for the potential release of 10-15 hostages held in Gaza in exchange for a short ceasefire, a source briefed on the talks tells AFP.

“Negotiations mediated by the Qataris in coordination with the US are ongoing to secure the release of 10-15 hostages in exchange for a one- to two-day ceasefire,” the informed source says, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the talks’ sensitivity.

FM Cohen tells EU parliament that war on Hamas is ‘war of the free world’

Israel’s war to wipe out Hamas in Gaza is “the war of the free world,” Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen tells EU lawmakers in Brussels.

Cohen also says Israel was attacked not only by Hamas but by other terror groups in the region that are supported by Iran, which he calls “the world number one financer of terror.”

IDF says it has found and destroyed 130 Hamas tunnel shafts in Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces says troops have found and destroyed some 130 tunnel shafts in the Gaza Strip since the ground operation began last month.

Troops of the Combat Engineering Forces have been working to clear routes for ground forces to maneuver, locate and destroy Hamas assets, including tunnels and rocket launchers.

The IDF says troops of the 460th Brigade with engineering forces found a number of tunnel entrances next to a structure with car batteries, which are thought to be hooked up to the tunnel’s air filtration system.

Forces of the Nahal Infantry Brigade meanwhile captured a Hamas training camp in northern Gaza.

The IDF says that the troops found a staging ground within the camp, where Hamas operatives had prepared weapons and food in order to carry out an attack. Within the camp, several tunnel entrances were also found.

All of the tunnels were destroyed, the IDF adds.

Israel extends operation of 'evacuation corridor' in Gaza by one hour

Israel’s military has said it is extending the hours today that it will allow people in the north of the Gaza Strip to evacuate to the south.

In a message posted to social media in the Arabic language by an IDF spokesperson, it said:
O residents of Gaza, in response to your great response since the morning hours, we have decided to extend the operation of the safe corridor on the Salah al-Din Road for the movement of residents to the south of Wadi Gaza by an additional hour! For your safety, join the large thousands who headed to the southern Wadi Gaza area since the morning hours, so seize the opportunity until three o’clock in the afternoon to protect yourselves and members of your families.
[...]

Eylon Levy, an Israeli government spokesperson, told Sky News in the UK on Wednesday that only 100,000 civilians remained in northern Gaza out of the population of 1.1 million.

More than 150 British nationals have left Gaza via the Rafah crossing as of Tuesday night, a Foreign Office minister has siad in parliament in London.

Making a statement in the Commons, PA Media reports Andrew Mitchell said:

Immediately after Hamas’ brutal assault, the government brought home almost 1,000 British nationals safely on charter and military flights, but the safety of all British nationals is our utmost priority and so we are in regular contact with those in Gaza registered with us since the conflict began.

Hamas (UK: /həˈmæs/ hə-MASS, US: /həˈmɑːs/ hə-MAHSS;[57] Arabic: حماس, romanized: Ḥamās, IPA: [ħaˈmaːs]),[58] an acronym of its official name, the Islamic Resistance Movement (حركة المقاومة الإسلامية Ḥarakat al-Muqāwamah al-ʾIslāmiyyah), is a Palestinian Sunni Islamist[59] political and military organization governing the Gaza Strip of the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories.[60] Headquartered in Gaza City, it also has a presence in the West Bank (the larger of the two Palestinian territories), in which its secular rival Fatah exercises control.

Blinken: Israel cannot occupy Gaza, but "there may be a need for some transition period" at end of war

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday that it’s "clear that Israel cannot occupy Gaza," but "there may be a need for some transition period at the end of the conflict" between Israel and Hamas.

The top US diplomat’s mention of a "transition period" came in response to comments from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who earlier this week said Israel will have the "overall security responsibility" in Gaza for an "indefinite period" after the war with Hamas ends.

Blinken said he heard from Israeli officials that "they have no intent to reoccupy Gaza and retain control of Gaza."

In an implicit rebuttal to Netanyahu’s comments, Blinken explicitly laid out the United States' terms for “durable peace and security” in Gaza after the war, stressing that its territory must not be reduced or occupied.

"It is imperative that Palestinian people be central to the governance in Gaza, and in the West Bank as well, and that again, we don't see a reoccupation," Blinken said at a news conference following the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Tokyo.

“The only question is, is there some transition period that might be necessary? And what might be the mechanisms that you could put in place for that to make sure that there is security. But we're very clear on no reoccupation, just as we're very clear on no displacement of the Palestinian population,” he said.

In Brussels, FM Cohen says Iran is financing Hamas to stop Arab countries’ normalization with Israel

Foreign Minister Eli Cohen tells EU parliamentarians in Brussels that Iran is orchestrating attacks on Israel in order to stop the tide of normalization and peace in the region.

“We need to win this war in order to ensure that the West will not be next, since terrorism, it’s like a cancer,” Cohen says, adding that Hamas has used international financial aid to build tunnels and rocket factories while leaving Palestinians “starving.”

“We are not attacked only by the Hamas and by the Islamic Jihad. We are also attacked by the Hezbollah in our northern border and also by the Houthis in Yemen,” Cohen adds.

“There is one thing that connects them: Iran. Iran is the world number one financer of terror,” he says, accusing Tehran of acting to try and “stop the normalization and the peace process that took place in the last three years.”

Hamas slams UNRWA for ‘colluding’ with Israel in southward movement of Gazans

Hamas angrily accuses the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees of “colluding” with Israel in the “forced displacement” of residents of Gaza.

“UNRWA and its officials bear responsibility for this humanitarian catastrophe, in particular the residents of the Gaza [City] area and north of it” who are moving along IDF-arranged displacement routes to flee south, says Salama Maruf, head of the media bureau of Hamas.

For weeks Israel has been urging residents of the northern part of the Strip to move south ahead of its now-intense ground operation. Over the past few days, the IDF has secured humanitarian corridors to enable residents to head southward safely, infuriating Hamas.
