Under Italian law he can be held without formal charge or trial for a year to give prosecutors time to investigate but he should be released if no evidence is produced.

However, magistrate Barbara Zuin has applied for a 12-month extension and her request is due to be heard on Friday (Jan. 26).

Yesterday investigating magistrate Barbara Zuin applied for an extension.

However, Luigi Conti, who is representing Belling, said: “The prosecutors are saying the Irish authorities are taking their time in getting back to them.

“They have asked for more background checks on the family in Ireland including previous convictions and if they have been investigated for any other matters.

I hope they are receiving emotional support; one day they are having fun on a cruise and a few days later no parents in sight. It must be distressing for them to say the least

Wonder if Italian police questioned the boy on "why" he was crying... you would "think" they did. Greece. His wife got off to see someone in the Chinese community there. :dunno:

German-born Mr Belling (46) flew back into Dublin last week after his solicitor persuaded authorities to release him from custody.

According to reports in the Italian press, he claimed his wife left the ship when he and the children joined a shore excursion. Murder suspect Belling claims she walked off the ship in the Greek port of Katakolon after a row — despite the cruise operators insisting its electronic systems would have picked this up.

His lawyer has now unearthed bombshell new evidence showing Xing’s credit card was used to pay a toll on Dublin’s M50 after she disappeared.

And it’s emerged the locks on their Dublin house were changed — while Belling was sitting in an Italian prison as cops probed the baffling case.

I'm pretty certain The Irish Sun is considered MSM. I've followed cases in Ireland and many of the articles are from this source. It's also owned by the same company as The New York Post and WSJ.

There was a report just yesterday or day before by German television on this case. I will try to find it. What stuck me was that he calmly finished the whole cruise before mentioning her missing and that he is still living with his MIL .

Man whose spouse vanished is held by fraud squad - Eire

A man who spent 14 months on remand in jail for the alleged murder of his wife has been arrested by fraud squad gardaí for seven different deception offences linked to a mortgage and other loan applications.

It is expected German national Daniel Belling (47), of Clarehall, north Dublin, will be charged in relation to the alleged offences which happened at four different financial institutions in the capital.

He was arrested by detectives from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau last Thursday and spent a number of hours being questioned at Swords Garda station.
