'More Jail' Cruise ship murder *suspect Daniel Belling faces another year behind bars while prosecutors investigate the case
https://www.thesun.ie/news/2087316/...-bars-while-prosecutors-investigate-the-case/

Under Italian law he can be held without formal charge or trial for a year to give prosecutors time to investigate but he should be released if no evidence is produced.

However, magistrate Barbara Zuin has applied for a 12-month extension and her request is due to be heard on Friday (Jan. 26).

Case hold up Italian officials probing cruise ship murder suspect Daniel Belling accuse Irish authorities of ‘delaying the case’
https://www.thesun.ie/news/2121237/...ccuse-irish-authorities-of-delaying-the-case/

Under Italian law he can be held without formal charge or trial for 12 months in order to give prosecutors time to investigate — but he should be released if no evidence is produced.

Yesterday investigating magistrate Barbara Zuin applied for an extension.

However, Luigi Conti, who is representing Belling, said: “The prosecutors are saying the Irish authorities are taking their time in getting back to them.

“They have asked for more background checks on the family in Ireland including previous convictions and if they have been investigated for any other matters.
[.....]
"The prosecutor has barely any evidence so I think the judge will grant the extension so they can try to build their case against him."
[.....]
Judge Maria Paola Tomaselli will give her ruling next week.

Article says "next week" - I am going to assume next week ending Feb. 9th. :D

Are the children now staying with their grandparents in Ireland or housed somewhere else by social services, do we know?

I hope they are receiving emotional support; one day they are having fun on a cruise and a few days later no parents in sight. It must be distressing for them to say the least :(

I haven't seen any articles that has mentioned his child or "where" they are....

https://www.thesun.ie/news/2189544/...-leave-him-and-return-to-china-lawyer-claims/

Cruise murder suspect Daniel Belling’s wife was desperate to leave him and return to her native China before she vanished, his lawyer claimed yesterday.

Furious Luigi Conti told the Irish Sun he has unearthed a bombshell document that proves missing Xing Lei Li hated her life in Dublin.
[.....]
And he slammed the authorities in Ireland for “dragging their heels” as an Italian judge ordered father-of-two Belling, 46, to stay in prison there for another six months.
[.....]
Last month, prosecutors applied for a year’s extension to continue their inquiries, but a time limit of six months has now been set.
[.....]
“Ireland is not cooperating at all with the Italian authorities and that means my client still remains in jail where he has been detained for a year without formal charge.”

So, I'm thinking until August, 2018....

Sharing a Google Alert:

'I just have to get through it' - mum of woman who went missing on cruise ship holiday
https://www.independent.ie/irish-ne...-missing-on-cruise-ship-holiday-36724496.html

THE mother of a Dublin-based Chinese woman feared dead after she disappeared while on a cruise with her husband and two children has broken her silence for the first time and said the situation is very sad for her.
[.....]
Mr Belling was arrested and has since repeatedly denied killing his wife. He has not been charged with any offence and his lawyer is trying to have him released on bail but he still remains in an Italian prison.
[.....]
Ms Li was registered on the Magnifica’s passenger record on February 10, following a stopover at Genoa, the day after the ship set sail.
A souvenir shop owner later told reporters that she remembered the couple and their two children in her store that morning, when Mr Belling was “agitated” and “yelled” at his wife over her shoes. “He said, ‘Put these on instead of your sandals and shut up’,” she said, adding that he handed his wife a pair of gym shoes.

Is “Murdered” Cruise Passenger Actually Alive?
https://cruiseradio.net/is-murdered-cruise-passenger-actually-alive/

After spending fourteen months in an Italian jail, a man suspected of killing his wife while they were on a cruise insists not only that he is innocent of murder… but that she is alive and well and living in China.
[.....]
According to Belling, this development would not surprise him in the least. “Her desire to leave us was always there, and the cruise was the perfect way for her to escape,” he theorized. “She told me she was getting off the ship because she had business meetings in Greece with the Chinese community there.”
[.....]
Unfortunately, the nightmare may not yet be over for Belling, who could still face charges. “If this nightmare comes to trial, then I will go back to Italy and defend myself,” he declared, “because I am innocent!”

Quote from post #31 link

A crew member is also said to have told officers that he found one of the kids wandering around the ship crying on February 15, five days after the cruise started and shortly after the Magnifica had left Athens.

Wonder if Italian police questioned the boy on "why" he was crying... you would "think" they did. Greece. His wife got off to see someone in the Chinese community there. :dunno:

Murder suspect is back in Dublin - living with the mother of his missing wife
https://www.independent.ie/irish-ne...-the-mother-of-his-missing-wife-36857644.html

Dublin-based murder suspect Daniel Belling is settling into family life again after 14 months in an Italian jail.

German-born Mr Belling (46) flew back into Dublin last week after his solicitor persuaded authorities to release him from custody.
[.....]
Mr. Belling reportedly told an Italian judge that he and his wife had fought and that she wanted to "quit the trip". According to reports in the Italian press, he claimed his wife left the ship when he and the children joined a shore excursion. Mr Conti has said that he now has incontrovertible proof that Xing Li had been planning to disappear before she even set foot on the ship.

"Interviews Li did with psychologists and doctors in Ireland before they ever went on the cruise prove she was planning on leaving Daniel," he said.

Is this a "tabloid type" paper??

Missing cruise mum 'sending texts to secret Irish lover' before vanishing

The Chinese national hasn’t been seen since February 10, 2017 — the day after the family boarded a ten-day MSC Magnifica cruise of the Mediterranean.

Murder suspect Belling claims she walked off the ship in the Greek port of Katakolon after a row — despite the cruise operators insisting its electronic systems would have picked this up.

His lawyer has now unearthed bombshell new evidence showing Xing’s credit card was used to pay a toll on Dublin’s M50 after she disappeared.

And it’s emerged the locks on their Dublin house were changed — while Belling was sitting in an Italian prison as cops probed the baffling case.
[.....]
Solicitor Conti said the case is due to go to trial in March and claims evidence obtained by Belling’s nephew should be enough to exonerate him.

He told the Irish Sun: “An invoice was sent to us in the post by Daniel’s nephew. It showed her credit card had been used to pay the motorway close to Dublin after Daniel was arrested.”
[.....]
“It was clear, that someone entered the house and changed the locks. The wife had a set of keys. According to her husband, she was the only one to have copy of the keys. She entered the house and then changed the lock.
[.....]
He claims Xing, who ran a wedding planning firm, had told a psychologist in Ireland that she was “fed up with her kids” and was “tired of Europe”.

Belling has claimed he was “set up” by his “cruel” spouse. The Italian prosecutor’s office could not be reached for comment on Conti’s claims.

I'm pretty certain The Irish Sun is considered MSM. I've followed cases in Ireland and many of the articles are from this source. It's also owned by the same company as The New York Post and WSJ.

There was a report just yesterday or day before by German television on this case. I will try to find it. What stuck me was that he calmly finished the whole cruise before mentioning her missing and that he is still living with his MIL .

Makes you wonder (side eye) about the MIL / SIL relationship.
