Some function? That could be worse than brain death, if she ends up in vegetative state.
She was old, but obviously a very vibrant woman.

Was old? Past tense? Ms. Rivers is still with us. :)

Critical care nurse here (unverified except by the RN license I've held for 37 years) and it is not unusual to move patients from the ICU if beds are needed for more viable patients.

Catmammy, just how long can Joan be kept at this status? Indefinitely? What is the norm?

TIA for your answer.

This is not fact, only speculation, but a purported friend of Melissa Rivers was interviewed yesterday on my local radio station. She said that it was her belief that Melissa is having a very hard time letting go, but that it is not hopeful. Sometimes it does take some time for the family to ready themselves to release their loved one and it certainly seems that these two were extremely close.

I am sad to think that may be true, like so many others I wish the best for Joan and my prayers are with her and her family.

In one of the early media reports following Ms. Rivers' hospitalization, her daughter intimated that, unless her mother could live an active, productive life, she would not want to be kept alive. No one wants their loved one to suffer. My thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Rivers' family. :rose:

What I find shocking is that she, supposedly, was totally fine and vibrant as usual, and just went in for a routine procedure. She had a full schedule every day and seemed to be thriving. (Just one day doing her schedule would wear me out for a week!)

And then, BAM, just like that, she's down and things are gravely serious. What a difference a few minutes can make.

I have always liked her. Things don't sound good, and I feel for her daughter, grandson and loved ones. I hope Joan is not suffering.

"...Health officials said investigators visited the clinic to determine whether it will be cited for violations related to reporting incidents similar to Rivers' to the state. However, officials have not confirmed what triggered the investigation..."

Rivers currently on life support

Author: By Alan Duke CNN

(CNN) -
The outpatient clinic where comedian Joan Rivers suffered cardiac arrest during a procedure last week is being investigated, a health official said Thursday.

Rivers is on life support at a Manhattan hospital, where she was taken after she stopped breathing at the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic last Thursday.

The New York State Department of Health is "investigating the matter," spokesman James O'Hara told CNN...

Joan Rivers was a keynote speaker at a women-in-business conference I attended many years ago. She lit a fire under us - no soft and fuzzy words from one woman to another, but a reminder that success means hard work, plain and simple. She was strong in her words and in her spirit, but also funny. And, as soon as her speech was over, she left the building. She didn't linger past her time. Sort of like now.

Rest in peace, Joan.
