She may have had a heart attack, unrelated to the procedure or medications given. I think autopsy would show this. One report indicated the pulse oximeter was noted to be dropping and it was noticed she was not breathing. If this is the cause, it never should have happened.

Had a gentleman brought to the recovery room after surgery. He was very obviously blue and not breathing. Anesthesiologist and other staff bringing him in were not at all rushed. I commented on the patients appearance ane the anesthesiologist told me to shut up cause everyone could hear me. I handed in my letter of resignation that same day. I don't play games!

IMO until the autopsy report is released, if ever, there is only speculation. I have speculated as to what happened as I have been in procedures where this did happen in my medical career. IMO, Somewhere along the line, someone lost control of JR airway, long enough for her to become hypoxic and cause cardiac arrest. So at least 4 minutes. This certainly was an unexpected tragedy and hopefully policies and procedures will be tightened. Unfortunately, with famous people, acquiescing to their privacy issues are not always in their best interests. Deepest condolences to those who knew and loved her. JMV

It's hard to know what happened, given all the opposing stories being told by "sources."

Never say never, but I just cannot for the life of me envision ANYONE in my facility deviating from the SOP to this degree. We all value our licenses to practice, but even aside from that, I've never seen anyone be cavalier with our patients' lives. We want EVERYONE who sets foot in our facility to walk out healthy and with their dignity intact. Anyone trying to take a selfie with a patient would be shouted down so fast. Maybe this facility didn't have the proper checks and balances. Meaning, were the docs considered Gods who couldn't be questioned? Everyone from our GI techs to our nurses to our Director of Nursing to our CRNAs would loudly call out a doctor who behaved so unprofessionally. WTH?!?!

I worked in a hospital recovery room and was told the doctors were the hospital's most important customers!

They did claim there was no biopsy. The truth we will never know.

Since there is an investigation, I hope people with talk.
They seem to be already talking, as some source claims there was a biopsy (even though clinic claims there wasn't).

Oh, I have a feeling we are going to know all about this.

You have led a very sheltered existence. The stuff I've seen happen in ASCs would curl your hair.

^^^^Maybe so. Our CRNAs are VERY vocal when they see anything they cannot get on board with. There have been times where they have refused to do cases when the patient's ASA score was too high. I remember much debating going on about a case a doc wanted to do and the CRNA refused. The CRNA director spoke to the doc, backed up the CRNA, and they did not do the case. Doc was peeved, but there were no repercussions for the CRNAs. It's their license on the line as well, and they are within their rights. Our Director of nursing has backed us up before as well when necessary. My facility is physician owned, but we all are subject to the ambulatory surgery center regulatory board and it would be pretty easy to report incidents such as what was apparently (possibly) going on at that facility.

I think certain facilities have a certain "culture," bad or good. The MD who is the director of our facility is an amazing physician and person. He is very "do everything by the book", very principled. I guess it comes from the top and the top dog at that facility apparently didn't measure up.

Something tells me this clinic is going to go to hell in a hand basket! It's all about the money. They collect whether you live or die. So glad I am no longer in the biz, because I am not a "team player". Sickening!

BREAKING NEWS: Staff member tells investigators doctor took a selfie photo in the procedure room while Joan Rivers was under anesthesia, source says.

Source: Joan Rivers' doctor took selfie, began biopsy before her cardiac arrest

http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/16/showbiz/joan-rivers-clinic/index.html

So her personal specialist (ear, nose and throat md) that went to the endoscopy clinic took a selfie with her while she was under anesthesia!!??!!
The same MD that, allegedly, performed a biopsy on her vocal cords, without prior consent from her

Why hasn't this doctor been named yet?
