Jose Baez Press Conference - Wed., 1/21/09

  • #281
I tried to transcribe the press conference and what was said for those who couldn't listen. Sorry it's patchy at points (indicated with ...) and my feed went out for a second in the middle:

Baez:
I really just have a few brief words. um initially i hadn't thought of commenting on this, but it was recommended that i do and ill go ahead and do so. i just have a couple of topics and then im i have actually another appt so i dont have time to stand and answer questions. first off, since this process began, i have on many occasions faced a lot of criticism. ive been attacked personally. um mostly by certain tabloid stations and certain tabloid reporters that to be quite honest with you, dont actually deserve recognition in any way. it doesnt necessarily bother me. it only bothers me when it affects those who are close to me. such as my family and the people who actually care about me. and the reason it doesnt bother me is bc i signed on for this and what i mean by that is that i took an oath and my job is that of a defense lawyer. and quite frankly if you want to get to my client you have to go thru me first. and i feel very strongly about that.....
and i dont care how much criticism i face personally. ...what type of speculation is out there. however if it gets to the point where it's defamatory and could be considered tortuous interference.
this case will come to pass one day and i will be still a member of this community. i want to be remembered as someone who....fought for his client.
not for someone who is , i guess, the subject of constant insinuations and unsubstantiated rumors which you know ive been at this game with you guys long enough to realize , if it's a slow news day, you guys are just itching and scratching to find something to make a story about. ...those of you have more integrity than others and there are those of you that simply dont care. you know, youll be dealt with at its proper time and place but right now im focused on my client.
*reporter interrupts with question*
i have more things to say.
i want to state for the record and be clear: i have absolutely no-- my stream cut out??sorry!---- between me and my client. i didn't respond to that i dont feel i had to justify it.
i follow the advice of those people who know better than i, if it affects my client in any way i will address it. that can be put to rest i have nothing to hide. absolutely nothing. i have conducted myself in the most professional manner that i possibly can.
the contingency fee thing: how ridiculous. this is 101 on the prof responsibility exam for every lawyer and that's the gimme question...
i wanna be clear about something else, im doing the best job i can and will work hard and continue to work. and ive just begun to fight. so these little things, while they are just simple small distractions they are very small distractions. im aware of the fact that im the first Hispanic lawyer to have a case of this magnitude....it means a great deal to me. i will not embarrass those who come after me of doing something so foolish or unethical as what ive been accused of.
it is, absolutely untrue and should be put to rest period.
discovery that just came out today-- im sure you're all burning to ask me a bunch of questions about that.
wont address today's discovery-- want to know what i think, youll see it when we hit the courtroom and quite simply not before that.

last issue you've been quite concerned about: change of venue:
that will be heard very shortly. where we are asking to go is IMO i do not believe it should be disclosed quite frankly bc i dont want that specific area tainted. if it's disclosed, it wont be disclosed by the defense. ill say that much. i dont know how long that secret or that issue can be kept a secret but i would ask all of you this: if you're interested in justice if you want justice for whomever who is involved in this case, you should allow justice to work and allow Casey anthony to have her day in court...
i will answer 3 questions by three specific reporters?
question from spanish-speaking news channel:
no translation:
discuss the fl bar investigation:
im public enemy # 2 and im a target and i've had numerous complaints by anonymous people and some people who arent anonymous. most have been. they have absolutely nothing to do with any entertainment deals or book deals, just wild accusations. obviously the Bar has to investigate them.... and that's really all that is.

motion filed today need to have an independent analysis... I have a
small interview for Univision and then i have to go.

*walks away*

In every interview Mr. Baez has given, I've noticed that he continually uses the word "I" to a degree that seems embarrassingly pompous for a truly qualified defense attorney. Your transcript really illustrates that IMO.

Also, I may be incorrect, but I felt that DC did the same thing, compared to MN.

Isn’t it strange, how righteously indignant and "sensitive" defense attorneys are (not only JB, but those appearing on NG and JVM tonight) about having their own integrity and innocence challenged. My God, these are the same self-righteous attorneys who will proudly, cunningly, and knowingly assassinate the reputations, publicly disgrace, or even ruin the lives--of innocent parties--all in the name of "presenting an alternative theory of the crime" or "zealously defending their client." And their consciences won’t keep them awake. Sorry, I need to move this to the rant thread if I can figure out how. :)

True Dat.....on JB & the I word.....can't imagine JB & KC 's conversations

Someone needs to 'loop' JB's presser in with KC's I, ME you tube video..

my question...... is he whining in spanish too ???

we have to wait for "OUR" independent experts for an independent judgement.

pass the cool aid.

Merely the fact that they are paid by the defense to bolster the defense's point of view precludes them from being "Independent experts". Their backgrounds of selling services to the highest bidder makes an "Independent judgement" a stranger to the realm of possibility.

I reckon iffen the offense hadda hired 'em, the defense woulda got Gary Sinise

Mike Galanos had by far, the best show of the day. By a mile. His 3 defense atty's were nothing like JVM's and NG's. He also allows them to talk, unlike NG. They were, I hate to say it, fair and balanced!

  • #286
When he speaks he uses a lot of unnecessary words, his point often gets lost on his longwinded answers. I want to say get to the point I can see jurors getting bored and not paying attention. He can have the best forensic people in the world but if he doesn't question them correctly its pointless.

I agree. He meanders off all over the place and loses the point and the impact. As was said, he should have prepared and made a short to the point statement and moved off. As usual, he was totally un-prepared and flies by the seat of his pants and, given his speaking skills --- is lacking.

It is critical to present and argue in court that he be able to captivate and inspire the Jury -- if he stays on he will lose the Jury in his opening remarks.

I often think that JB is just out front and there is a hard working focused team behind him doing the real work. However, JB is the last person to be out front, either speaking to the media or in court. Baden was/is better.

It seems bizarre that if this Defense is funded by some high stakes rollers that they leave JB out front and don't sidelline him to just placate KC.

If JB thinks he can start throwing around the race card, trust me..it will come back to bit him in the butt. Everytime he opens his mouth, I see him and KC as two peas in a pod.

I think because KC lacks any chance of winning juror sympathy, due to her lies, statements on videos and, 31 days that JB's new idea is that he plays the victim instead and wins sympathy.

By playing the race card and maybe moving the trial to a high hispanic area, he gets one or two jurors on the trial that identify with JB and want to see a hispanic succeed in the trial of the century.

It is just like the OJ trial with Johnny seeking that one african american .... JB is playing victim and seeking that one hispanic. JMHO.

I sell insurance so I speak in front of people everyday about a very boring topic if your lucky you can keep their attention for 20 minutes. We were also trained that most people will only remember 4 things from a presentation. I wonder what 4 things jb would like the jurors to remember about kc.

I wonder what 4 things jb would like the jurors to remember about kc.

1. She's totally hot!

2. She smells really nice.

3. Her skin is really soft.

4. She says I'm sexy!

Sorry......I couldn't resist!

JB:

1. KC 'absolutely' loves that child [whatever her name is].

2. 'Absolutely' no-one knows the real loving KC like I do.

3. KC is 'absolutely' innocent, she told me so. She knows.

4. To find KC guilty would 'absolutely' be a waste .... a huge waste!

No, no it should stay right here where it belongs. With the JB report. I had a really hard time hearing what JB was saying, what came through loud and clear was the major case of whine he brought with him to the presser. Actually called the presser to spew.

I try so hard to be tolerant of all people, but when I see people who use their circumstances to hurt others, then whine and cry when it comes back at them, it makes me angry and not so tolerant.

Someone please tell me (I told all I am not knowledgeable) When J. is on GR. and all the talk shows he's been on ~ aren't they considered the media also? Isn't he knocking what he himself is doing? He's out there discussing the case!

Yes, it is just politics.

The same way politicians bash the media via talking to the media, JB is using the media to bash the media.

JB is just seeking to lay a guilt trip and seek some empathy from the media. He is biased and selective though in that he chooses 'safe' channels such as Fox News and Univision that are JB friendly.

I was amused to see JB play the race card and then take questions and the first reporter he invites speaks in Spanish and he responds in Spanish, without translating for anyone else. How rude!!!!

If he wanted to garner sympathy then he needs to set a good example and if he is going to do that, and go off to interview with Univision then he is going to get worse press, not good press. He is in their face arrogant.

And he is not the only one from the defense team with diarrhea of the mouth either. He's like the A's IMO..if he wants to use the press for his benefit, it's all good, otherwise they can go to hell! JMO.
