“The defense attorney proposed that circumventing the software would be as easy as simply buying a new device.” Josh Duggar trial: Defense cross-examines Homeland Security investigator, prosecution calls 3 more witnesses

xcept that his wife could far more easily take note of a new device (and possibly also the purchase on a credit card) than a partition on an existing business computer IMO.

I hadn’t considered this. Curious, anyone know how much it would cost to partition the computer, if anything? If it does cost $$$, does the prosecution have a money trail on the partition? Or, did I read Josh admitted to doing this? MOO

Wow. I’m surprised he sat with her. I think he’s there for justice, not Anna and I don’t think they’re friends now! But I don’t know for sure.

From someone I follow who always seems to “know” things, most of which I wasn’t that interested until the current & apparently widening family split.

But I was told Derek & Jill see Anna as more of a victim or at least sympathetically & as a JB captive so he was apparently just being friendly/supportive. But today Anna came with approved reinforcements. I still don’t understand the whole family as to how it shakes out but the more dependent are more supportive of the company line. Just my opinion/interpretation/speculation about public figures.

Watch him try hard to play dumb now. It is my opinion, based on what I heard on a podcast, from someone who allegedly was friends with him at the time he was molesting his victims, he definitely had a huge interest in hiding materials on computers. I wonder if anyone on the witness list can testify as to that, to bolster what LE has stated are his own self-incriminatory statements.

Jim Holt I believe will testify specifically about Josh’s proficiency with installing partitions. He may also have more knowledge but that’s the one specific thing I heard. He had extensive interactions with Josh. He was JB’s bestie for years. I’ve got to imagine his & his wife’s testimony is perking up interest around Arkansas.

God bless the investigators and jury. I’m not sure I’d ever be the same if I had to see those photos.

I feel almost traumatized hearing the titles. I hope I never have to hear them again.

Your quote:
Isn't this witness coaching?

Good question for @gitana1 verified attorney.

Yes. The objection is “Leading.” But if it was on cross and relates to questions during direct, it could be permissible.

  • #808
Or else they deliberately withheld them to obstruct the investigation? What can I say, I'm not normally one for conspiracy theories, but given Jim Bob's convenient memory losses on stand and subpoena avoidance tactics, my mind sure did go there.

Except it was only on the days CSAM were found. They submitted others. If they had evidence other employees were there that day it could cast doubt as to who viewed the materials. But it wouldn’t necessarily point to one person. But if they withheld info about other employees there that day, then they’d be incriminating Josh. It’s his business and he’s the eldest child. I doubt they’d do that.

I never dreamed that the CSAM material that was downloaded was as horrific as described in court today. I cried my eyes out.

Yes. The ongoing description of the CSAM, is appalling. I really didn't think it could get any worse, and then, it did.

Seriously, if Josh Duggar was watching this, for entertainment, it is very concerning to me that he is around any children.

Same here. I never dreamed it could be so horrifying. Although I really thought he would take a plea deal, thereby getting a lighter sentence, when he is found guilty (yes, I prefer to think when, not if), I think this judge, who had the guts to put JB in his place, will sentence Josh to the maximum sentence on each count.

That makes sense.

It is appalling. It makes me feel super angry and disgusted. I will never ever understand this.

If the judge understood that dynamics of their sect and how (IMO, based on years of researching this family) Anna and Josh were raised with the concept of a “headship” and obedience to one’s husband, as well as victim-blaming of abuse victims, and classifying child sexual abuse as merely “inappropriate” and not much different from lying, I wonder if he still would’ve allowed visits with his kids as long as Anna was present.

She has no power to protect her kids. Josh has authority over her. If he decided to go on a walk with one of the kids, she would not be able to say “no”, really.

IIRC, this was the state judge that set the bail conditions, right? So when/ if he is found guilty, can the federal judge revoke his bail until sentencing? I'm not sure how that works.

If it was a Windows pc it would be as simple as doing the following (no $$):

How to Create or Modify a Partition in Microsoft Windows | Dell UK
Windows 10 and 11

To create a partition from unpartitioned space follow these steps:
  1. Right-click This PC and select Manage.
  2. Open Disk Management
  3. Select the disk from which you want to make a partition.
  4. Right-click the Unpartitioned space in the bottom pane and select New Simple Volume.
  5. Enter the size and click next, and you are done.

(In my case I was partitioning a Macbook though, to run Windows in addition to the Apple programmes and I used Parallels which I did have to pay for. I am not techie so I don’t know if it is possible to do that yourself for free (Install Windows on Mac)

Josh Duggar Trial: Computer Expert Details What He Saw on Office Computer at Center of the Case

On the stand, with the aid of a series of screenshots taken during his forensic analysis (and recreated via a visualization tool that draws from a copy of the HP hard drive), Fottrell walked through some of what he saw and learned in exploring the machine.

........

Fottrell then switched to the Linux side of the hard drive, where the sexual abuse material was found.

He reiterated the password for the Linux side: intel1988, which prosecutors argue was used by Duggar for some of his personal accounts (and also includes his year of birth). A former employee and distant Duggar relative suggested on the stand earlier Thursday they might also be aware of it — something prosecutors ridiculed as a convenient ploy.

.......

Fottrell said the various associated timestamps with the computer use showed a pattern: The hard drive was partitioned and the Linux side booted up on May 13, 2019, after which Tor — a widely used but controversial Internet browser that preserves anonymity — was downloaded within 20 minutes.

A peer-to-peer file-sharing program, uTorrent, was also installed as was a media player. (It was a peer-to-peer program on the IP address at Duggar's car lot that first caught the police's attention in May 2019.)

And even as the defense has sought to desensationalize the use of Tor and peer-to-peer programs — which Duggar has previously said he was aware of or had used — Fottrell showed that his work linked the Tor on Duggar's work desktop to the so-called "Dark Web," which is only accessible on Tor's "hidden services": a network of anonymous websites.

"It's mostly criminal activity," Fottrell said. Credit card and financial schemes; drugs; guns; sexually exploitative material and murder-for-hire. "All kinds of crazy stuff," he said.

The Tor browser on Duggar's HP had bookmarked two sites that kept lists of these anonymous websites on the Dark Web.

That's assuming Josh needs to.

IME, depending of course upon what one's bank uses, you can buy something from eBay and it will say the name of the store and some internal string of gobbledegook; but it won't give any hint as to what you bought.

Other secondhand markets may do the same type of thing, naming the store not the item.

This also assumes that Anna will look into or care about such a purchase; and that Josh is wedded to an expensive desktop for pursuing his perversions. If he opts for something like a Kindle Fire from a secondhand dealer, he could easily spend less than $100 on a second device.

It was a federal judge who allowed bail. Yes it can be revoked pending sentence.

Excellent points, thank you! I am reassured :)
