Kentucky - Judge killed, sheriff arrested in Letcher County courthouse shooting - Sep. 19, 2024 # 3

Despite what locals say (or don't say), I'll wait and let the evidence speak for itself.

The judge's phone records, Stines' phone records, what the lead detective stated at the prelim "occurred during those calls" with the judge & Stines' kid, whatever evidence the defense claims to have, and whatever motive Stines has offered up.

But if her number was saved under a different name it would not be easily found, however after he typed it in it would show what name it was saved under - just keying in the number doesn’t exclude the daughter’s number being stored already under her own name or a different name- moo
This is what I have thought for some time. The daughter's number was saved in the phone contacts but under a different name. The Sheriff actually punched in her number and as soon as he hits send, the phone will show the contact under which it was saved. The very fact it was saved under a different name is suspicious. Now, what that means, we don't know, but I think that is what the Sheriff meant to do and when the contact popped up, the Sheriff's suspicion was confirmed and he shot the Judge.

Agreed- we know that the daughter talked with law enforcement about her conversations with the judge- so there is known contact and honestly if I didn’t easily see the number I was looking for in “recents” not sure I’d go through someone’s contacts to search for a number, I’d just key it in- for all we k ow it was in the judges phone under the correct name- moo

It sounds like the Sheriff new exactly what he was doing and expected the result. This charade was just to let the judge know that he knew. I find the judge's demeanor just before the shooting to be interesting.

Agreed- my guess it was to prove that her number WAS saved and to confirm it - I think it’s possible that how her name came up could potentially be the final triggering factor- moo

For sure. The hands out; palms extended, I would project to say: Now, Now.. Lets talk talk this over, Let me explain, Whoa, you don't understand, it is not what you think, I can explain.

All project a serious fact has been uncovered and trouble is imminent.

I think the name being saved or not is not the catalyst. I think the fact (as I have understood the testimony) that he called his daughter from his phone. No answer. He then immediately calls her using the Judges phone. Answered. That confirmed whatever he had learned.

Did we ever learn if this was true or just rumor? I can’t remember and couldn’t find a link right away… I know it was talked about but don’t remember where …

I just want to know why? If this guy ends up suiceded in jail, well its going to be very suspicious.

My thoughts also. Would kind of settle the case with no solution. What is of more interest to me is how the "opposing" factions of locals; who have expressed very strong support for their selected side, will present it as witnesses in court.
Should embarrassing truths come up when the hands have been laid on the Bible; and twelve over there are listening to what you say, it might have been better to have not actually had a trial.
We have 3 sides here. He did it convict. He did it, but because..No bill it, and the LE community that may agree with either hypothesis but be restrained by any political positions involved.

I completely agree with the description of the judges movements - moo

IIRC it was stated early on that the judge typically was armed in his chambers and that day no gun was found post shooting-

Am I just wrong and making that up? Or does anyone remember what I’m talking about?

I cannot cite; but as I understood, the call from the judges phone was answered. Conversations or not was never clear. That is why I think the acceptance from that phone was the confirmation.

My recollection was that LE said the call from the Judge's phone to the girl was NOT answered. Can anyone find that info?

Kentucky State Police later clarified that they have no evidence the daughter’s phone number was on the judge’s phone before the sheriff dialed it, despite court testimony that suggested that. Trooper Matt Gayheart, a state police spokesman, attributed the confusion to what he called a “misleading” exchange during the preliminary hearing.

“It was very confusing,” Gayheart said. “I was even confused watching it.”

It’s not clear why the sheriff called his daughter from the judge’s phone. Gayheart says Stines’ daughter did not answer.

Stines' daughter did not answer her phone when her dad called her from the judge's phone.

"Police say Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines dialed his daughter’s number from District Judge Kevin Mullins’ phone, then pulled his gun and shot Mullins repeatedly inside his own chambers in the city of Whitesburg on Sept. 19.

I stand corrected as to her answering per the above. Actually it does not say he was answered or not. Says dialed and shot. #1,#2...
Actually, further along one of the courthouse persons said: He stood outside and never un holstered his weapon...(While responders were arriving.) The quote left out whether he holstered his weapon after the initial firing or after the final two as leaving. I assumed in the gaps...

I think the confusion about whether or not Stines' daughter answered the call from the judge's phone that day, might stem from the testimony the lead detective gave during the prelim. Based on his testimony, we do know that the judge and the minor child of Stines were in contact. When asked if LE had obtained her phone, he said no, and make a remark about whatever calls were made would be on the judge's phone records also (his phone was obtained & sent to the state lab), then also commented about the daughter being interviewed about what occurred during those conversations she had, with the judge.

So while we know they were in contact via phone, there wasn't any contact that specific day, according to the source in the NPR article.

This very clearly says the girl did not answer the phone.
