Kentucky - Judge killed, sheriff arrested in Letcher County courthouse shooting - Sep. 19, 2024 # 4

I don’t really see what killing Mullins gets Stines, if the sex ring story is true.
I have a feeling that there may be an additional component(s). Say....

- Sex for favors is OK, but I said not to proposition "T". She is a good girl, and more importantly, I know her mother.

- Sex for jail house favors is great! But.... I called dibs on "U". She only provides favors for me- not you.

- I look the other way regarding sex for favors. But... when I asked you for a favor for the son of a friend facing prosecution, you suddenly got ohhh so... righteous and refused. Worse yet, I promised his father that I would take care of it. Now its an honor issue.

- Sex with somewhat willing jail girls is one thing. But..... I told you not to traffic women- and especially not to traffic women from good families.

- Ok, sex has lost its luster and has turned into cash for favors. I need my cut.... .

I have to agree, there was a culture of fear here. They have a recording from a couple of years ago saying there are videos in the judge's chambers of sex trying to get an investigation started. I am sad that people that tried to get this investigated were not listened to or believed. This will be interesting to watch.

JMO. The irony of the name of the county is not lost on me.

Entin's producer made the same comment in today's video. An appropriately named county, it seems.

I completely missed that. And I watched it! So much for my attention span.

I think something along those lines.

I only pop in and out of the thread, and I welcome corrections if I'm going down the wrong track.

I wonder if the sheriff banked on having support for his actions in town and his "mental breakdown" is an act. For whatever reason, he thought killing the judge was worth the risk and might be welcomed, and he is willing to sit in jail for awhile, playing along and assuming he will get off?

I know that's far fetched, but something is still missing from this case to make it make sense.

I think what's missing is the reason he didn't name names in his deposition.

If all these women, the ones who went on camera and the ones who didn't, all say it wasn't a secret what was going on there, there's a reason Stines never said a word about who else was involved.

I don't know if any of this sex business will make it into the guilt phase of his trial, although I suspect his lawyers may try to have it admitted. These allegations do make me wonder if the video camera in the judge's chambers were there to defer sexual interactions or to record them for later viewing.

There was an overkill component to this event with an addition gunshot after the initial barrage. It has, since the beginning, been my thought that the sheriff felt some sense of betrayal from the judge (real or imagined). He obviously was under stress from the lawsuit. Although he in indemnified by the county, no-one (other than Alex Murdaugh at times) enjoys being sued. Civil complaints using legal jargon often come across as quite inflammatory. Did something come up during discovery that made MS feels like the judge had stabbed him in the back in some way?

The sheriff's actions after the event are confusing. He didn't run away. He didn't commit suicide. He simply voluntarily surrendered as if what he had done was justified in his mind. He wasn't insane, he knew what he did was illegal, possibly, at least in his own mind, felt like he did the right thing.

The victim in this case has never been named a predator nor should he be considered a predator without evidence. I personally feel like continuing a narrative that he is a predator without any evidence is reckless and victim blaming as if he deserved to be shot in cold blood in his chambers. It also definitely takes away from the pain of these victims if what they say is true as they will never ever receive justice. I've been a victim and all I ever got was, somebody should've taken them back and handled them. And no one ever did. So maybe my own perspective clouds things too...

I appreciate the attention but some of what I've said is being taken out of context to suit a narrative that goes against everything I said in the first place. Ah. The joys of public forums!

Excellent post and as a fellow onetime victim, I agree with the gap that can emerge between "home truths" and appropriate actions towards healing.

Hopefully any trial or perhaps Kentucky's version of a Coronial investigation into these allegations will provide some clarity. Until then, I feel like this case could use fewer OMG Bombshells! and more patience and on-the-ground advocacy for the victims of whatever abuse/ exploitation was happening in and around that jail. But does the alleged sex-for-favours/ swinger setup connect in a legally meangingful way to the murder?

With or without that component, Judge M was gunned down in a particularly stark and brutal way. It isn't clear to me that Stines's actions that day are either explained or mitigated by these events. But maybe that will change with more (and more clear) information.

JMO, IMO, MOO, etc

I’ve stayed away from posting here as i felt that what is being said about the judge and his chamber would come to light. I think that Stines being deposed to testify about him not having control over Fields is when he found out about what was going on in the chamber. Probably why he didn’t trust local LE not knowing who was all involved.

I’m on the fence about the murder charge and have been.

Or, it may be as simple as - the deposition brought about questions... an investigation is brewing... I can't take this pressure any more, and by H311, I am not going down alone for this...

To be honest, he maybe just couldn't handle the building pressure over this issue and the judge wasn't willing to admit any of it. He could have snapped under the stress of knowing what was happening and knowing it was wrong. He could see the house of cards falling and he didn't want to be on the bottom with the big guys taking no rap.

I agree. The Sheriff could have went to the FBI if necessary.

IMO, these allegations are believable to me and still need to be investigated outside of the murder trial.
IMO if Stines had went to the FBI he'd be a dead man or given another identity. Neither of which is a choice for a man from that area.

I'd like to point out the first woman seems to not be ashamed of her past, nor did she try to promote herself as something she wasn't.

She also seems to think that by speaking out now she isn't afraid as much due to her trust in God.

I wish she was asked at what age these events started.

I did find some of her non chalant descriptions of abuse disturbing.

I mean, no offense towards these lovely ladies, but couldn't they find some more credible people to interview?
This is exactly how the perps want their victims to be perceived.
They are "just drug addicts... can't be trusted. I'm respected in law enforcement. Believe me, not them," and people do.
@fsngruv I am glad you were honest and said what you said. Because many people feel this way, and this is why they can get away with it for so long.
The feds need to come in and take over.
This is HUGE.

Given the recent allegations, specifically accusing Kevin Mullins of sexual misconduct while serving first as the Assistant CW Attorney (2001), and then as District Court Judge (2009), I don't understand why the residents are not demanding a statement from their KY State Police!

IMO, if my community, I think I'd like to know if Mullins is being wrongly maligned while unable to defend himself, and also if the State Police previously investigated the claims made against Judge Mullins by the Plaintiff during their recorded interview during the criminal investigation of defendant Fields (former Letcher County Deputy), and if this allegation of seeing video of Mullins having sex in Chambers had merit.

Also, whether the State Police investigated repeated public claims to MSM by defense attorney Ned Pillersdorf, alleging the Letcher County Courthouse was being used "like a brothel" by the Officials.

Be reminded that the KY AG called on the KY State Police to conduct an Independent Investigation here after allegations were made against a Letcher County Deputy, the Letcher County Sheriff, and EKCS, as detailed in a January 2022 federal civil lawsuit, resulting in the termination of the deputy.

The Public has a right to know about the results of the KY State Police Investigation, and if their investigation was expanded to include Judge Mullins, and if there was no investigation, why not?

SUMMARY OF THE SUBJECT CIVIL LAWSUIT:

!). The civil suit by Plaintiff Adkins was filed January 31, 2022, and amended 3/18 and 9/28 to add Plaintiff Hill and Defendant EKCS.

In essence, Plaintiff Adkins asserted that Defendant Fields was liable for damages for false imprisonment, assault and battery, malicious prosecution, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and gross negligence. And Defendant Letcher County Sheriff is alleged to be liable to Plaintiff for deliberate indifference in failing to adequately train and supervise Defendant Fields.

The Plaintiff respectfully demanded the following relief:

An award of compensatory damages against the Defendants re. result of the Federal Constitutional violations described herein;
An award of compensatory damages against Defendants, damages for liability arising under state law;
An award of punitive damages against Defendants, to punish the Defendants and deter them, as well as others similarly situated, from engaging in unlawful and unconstitutional conduct in the future;
An award of Plaintiff’s costs incurred in prosecuting this action, including reasonable attorneys’ fees and any expert fees pursuant to 42 U.S.C. § 1988; {All complaint citations omitted}.

2) Defendant Fields was terminated from the Letcher County Sheriff's Office on 2/2/22.

3) Nine months after the civil lawsuit was filed, Fields was criminally Indicted by the Grand Jury on 9/29/22. Fields was charged with two counts of third-degree rape, two counts of third-degree sodomy, and three counts of tampering with a prisoner monitoring device. All those charges were felonies. He was also charged with one count of second-degree perjury, a misdemeanor, related to him allegedly filing a false complaint.

4) On Jan 10, 2024, Fields formally entered a guilty plea to third-degree rape, third-degree sodomy, two counts of tampering with a prisoner monitoring device and second degree perjury. The three charges related to the second woman were dismissed because she is now dead, but the civil case is continuing with her estate as plaintiff along with Adkins.

The case was prosecuted by Barbara Whaley of the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office and was heard by Pike Circuit Judge Eddy Coleman. Court documents show hearings were held in at least three counties other than Letcher.

In return for the guilty plea, the judge followed the recommendation in the plea agreement and sentenced Fields to five years each for rape, and two tampering charges, but that time be probated for seven years with supervision for five years. The perjury sentence of 12 months was conditionally discharged for 12 months.

Fields served six months in jail, and it's believed he was released from Letcher County Jail around the end of July 2024. He's required to register as a sex offender and complete outpatient sex offender treatment. Protective orders will be in place and effective for 10 years.

5) April 9, 2024 - Zoom Deposition of Sabrina Adkins, Leslie County Detention Center [filed 2/7/2025].

6) 3/4/2025 -
