I used to work in law enforcement, and I can tell you that people often do things that completely defy common sense; there is no road map to human behavior - it is utterly unpredictable! So many people assume that there's no way a young woman would walk away from friends alone late at night in the winter. And yet, I've seen many that have done exactly this! The biggest problem with inflexible thinking is that if you feel like an investigation should only go in one direction, you will never get to the truth - to the heart of what really happened. The best thing to do is to keep an open mind; second to this is to try and put yourself in the victim's or subject's shoes; think about what you would do in their situation. And remember, when you add in heightened emotions, relationship history, the influence of friends and family, alcohol, drugs, etc it can all become just a huge mess... I've completed over 5,000 investigations, and, up until I left LE I would be surprised by some aspect of the inquiry - on a regular basis! Lastly, I'd caution you against jumping into conspiracy theory; I've found that conspiracies are a product of a misunderstanding of facts, or else lazy thinking.

Excellent post.

In trying to understanding a victim's behavior and what happened, I really do try and put myself in the victim's or subject's shoes, their situation and emotional state- with what I can learn of their relationship history, influence of friends and family, alcohol, drugs, etc (using your words here, thanks). And their age. The worst way to look at a situation is thinking what would I do in this situation, the choices that I would make.

Your point about an open mind is right on as well. One thing that I do after a case is wrapped up is go back to my posts and review what I have said, and critique whether I was open minded, accurate, and if my posts had value.

Locally, we're getting less coverage on this case than we are on Savannah's and the Savannah coverage isn't great.

Police urge citizens to take extra safety precaution
With the ongoing search for Savannah Spurlock, the death of Amanda Bailey and the reported sexual assault incident that occurred near EKU’s campus Sunday, the Richmond community is feeling a bit uneasy.

Both Richmond and EKU police are reminding residents of the area to take extra caution in walking to their cars, leaving bars or meeting people out.

“If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t right,” said Richmond Assistant Chief of Police Rodney Richardson. “Walk in pairs, update someone when going from point A to point B, let them know a designated time you will be back. Do what you think is best to insure your personal safety.”

Richardson urged citizens that choose to carry extra protection such as pepper spray or a stun gun, to make sure that they are not unknowingly carrying a deadly weapon without a concealed to carry license.

“There are a lot of different things you can do to protect yourself, but as long as it is not considered a deadly weapon, then you are good,” said Richardson.

That’s bound to put the college students on pins and needles. I wonder what the odds are that those incidents are related? That’s super creepy.

I don't think there's any relation. The sexual assault happened to a man, not to a woman, so I think it's unlikely that it's related to what happened to Amanda. Savannah Spurlock disappeared after a very specific situation (going home to Garrard County with 3 men she met at a night out in Lexington). I think in both her case and in Amanda's case, the simplest explanation is to look deeper into the last person who reportedly saw them. I do feel sad for the man who was sexually assaulted though. That DID sound like a blitz attack. I attended EKU and my husband teaches there. I remember when I was a college student and things like this would happen. We were always highly encouraged to call the security van to come and get us if we had to walk across campus alone after dark. EKU's pretty good about looking after everyone's safety. I hope students continue to use the resources.

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– A body has been found off Concord Road in Richmond.

The Madison County Coroner has identified the body as that of 39-year-old Sinclair Johnson, of Madison County.

His body will be sent for autopsy. At this time, the cause of death is not known, but police say it could be medical or drug-related.
This was the second time in a month that a body was found along Concord Road. The Madison County coroner said that Johnson was pulled from a creek not far from where Amanda Bailey’s body was discovered.

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – The Madison County coroner completed the autopsy of a man found dead in a field on Thursday.

The body of Sinclair Johnson was found on Concord Road in Richmond, Kentucky. Johnson’s body was found 14 days after Amanda Bailey’s body was found, also on Concord Road.

The coroner said that Johnson was neither stabbed or shot. He also says he did not see any other trauma on Johnson’s body. The coroner said that Johnson’s death could be environmental, but that cannot be determined until the toxicology results are in.

Police said that it is possible that Johnson is the man they were pursuing on foot days ago following a robbery, but they are still investigating.

Coroner Awaiting Toxicology Report In Man’s Death

BBM. Probably no relation in these cases but bringing the quotes here since it mentions Amanda was found in the same area. Is this creek especially dangerous to cross? Perhaps it looks shallow in places where it is actually much deeper? Or is there a place someone could easily fall in by accident if they were running from someone?

I don't think the case are related either. According to a twitter post Johnson might have been running from LE.

KSP says it’s possible he was their man in a foot pursuit days ago.

Whoa, that's interesting - what a coincidence. It would be helpful to know more about the creek; I wish I had the answers to your questions.

I am waiting to hear the autopsy results and checking in periodically to see if there's anything new.

That creek's not very high unless it rains. Depending on where you crossed, it could barely cover the ankles. In the deepest spots, you're still looking at no deeper than waist.

Interesting! So no rushing river with dangerous currents, etc? Maybe some other medical emergency, hit & run, foul play or exposure to cold temps?

I'm waiting for results, too!

Do what you think is best to insure your personal safety.”

It's interesting that they made this warning/reminder to the public. It seems LE and city leaders usually try to avoid the hysteria at all costs. We'll have to watch this area closely. Are they thinking SK?

Hmm, I've decided that permit or no permit I will always heed his advice. take extra caution SNIP "Do what you think is best to insure your personal safety.”

How can I protect myself if deadly force is necessary? Mace, pepper spray, a key, my fingernails, a whistle, my screams, etc. aren't enough precautions to ensure my safety! A deadly weapon--now the playing field is a little more leveled. I think that's best. ;):D

...make sure that they are not unknowingly carrying a deadly weapon without a concealed to carry license.

There are a lot of different things you can do to protect yourself, but as long as it is not considered a deadly weapon, then you are good

:) Someone I know really, really well once said and I quotesme...;)

'Oh, I'll be good. My attorney will be happy to argue my case to a jury of MY peers who like I, not the politicians who make the laws, live our daily lives in crime-ridden areas with substandard justice system procedures and protocols. Crime is all around us, except perhaps gated communities, but most of us don't have that luxury. Some people don't even have the luxury of affording the costs and hassles associated with carrying legal.' ;)

Yaya thinks it'd be wise for her to heed only this warning.

take extra caution SNIP "Do what you think is best to insure your personal safety.”

I guess I'll go sit in LE's lobby my taxes pay for to keep safe.:(

Any updates to her case or the autopsy? There's been SO MANY missing persons and bodies found in Kentucky this year, it's so sad.
