LA - 28 injured when car runs into Mardi Gras parade, 25 Feb 2017

The news is on right now. I am watching Fox 8 local news. They said 28 people hurt, 21 brought to hospital. Witnesses say that the traffic was going very slowly, as people were in the street, as it was too crowded on the neutral ground (btw- what we call a neutral ground is what I think other cities call a median- a grassy area between the 2 sides of the street). They said he basically screeched his wheels and gunned the gas, attempting to go around the slow traffic. But, he hit 2 cars (hard!) and it shot him off to the left through the crowd. The witness said there was a lot of people pinned between his truck and the dump truck and there was lots and lots of blood.

That picture of the dad holding his little girl (she looks about 9) on the Advocate site I gave yall is terrifying! You can see the fear on his face, holding his little girl.

I just posted a link. If you go to this site:

https://www.facebook.com/TheAdvocateNewOrleans/posts/1067629513370082

they have multiple links. Also check wdsu, wvue and wwltv

In New Orleans, especially at Endymion, it is not that easy to just say stop the party. It is miles and miles long. It ends in the Superdome. There are something like 72 pieces of float, plus thousands of members of bands, dance teams, etc that are in this parade. That is all before you factor in the number of people watching. If they "ended" the party, where do the floats go? They turn around and go home? There are people on it. The most effective way is to clear the scene (as they did) and let the parade continue to roll through. When it is over, they can get to the evidence better. They did clear all the people who were near that area, I watched it live.

Ty from your link second video down - gave me a sense of what was going on

Right in the middle of it - a guy runs up to a cop and says this guy just pulled a knife on me - dont blame him - the cop-- turned around and went back to attending to a bunch of people who have just been run over

What struck me so was it like on the cops face and body language - really - you think you and I are discussing this now -- look around !

You are right! Let me tell you---- I am friends with several NOPD. These boys (and girls!) are worked beyond belief. They are required to work every parade for many, many hours. The Mardi Gras season, they work like 18 hour days for over a week straight. It is insane. They are given an almost impossible job on nearly no pay and for such extended time that it is maddening. They literally stand on every single street of the route. I sincerely cannot even imagine how they do it. And then, on top of that, they deal with a shooting every night, fights and that is only on the parade route! If you have an issue off the parade route, you are in big trouble. Because all of the police are already working their boots off on the route. It is a massive, chaotic mess. But, people love it. And those police stand there and happily do their jobs! I can bet they are definitely talking right now! And counting down the moments until the end of Mardi Gras. I will hope it goes quickly and safely for them, from here until Tuesday night at midnight.

Thank you NOPD!!!!! <3

Someone on a comment that is EMS explained his big green 3. She said it is like traffic light--- green means good, stable, yellow means hurt, red means seriously injured and black means dead. She said it is how they triage large events. Learned something new! Of course, he ends up with the green..................

When I see those pictures, I just want to cry. Those poor people. It looks like one is being given CPR, so some of them may have been critical until treated on the scene and transported to the hospital.

Finally a complete picture

http://www.wdsu.com/nowcast

I am grasping now from this piece - it initially broke as a bad car accident and then evolved into what it is --- that makes sense to me.

If you look at the bumper on the bottom of the screen at the beginning , -- first report it is a car accident.. it slowly turned into a mass casualty event.

This will make sense if you watch above.

So let me see if I have this correct. One is not safe in a movie theatre, a mall, a church, a airport, at fireworks, a school ,a bar, an office meeting. a beach,...........today we add a port o john to the list

Klechak said the driver "was swerving in between people trying to get through the traffic on North Carrollton and it seemed like he got pissed off because all of a sudden, he slammed the gas and his back tires started screeching, and it seemed like his foot never left the gas pedal."

"I remember there was one girl that was standing to our right that was pretty close to the street. We were five to six feet from the street, and she was directly on the corner. I guess she walked out at the wrong time, but she definitely got hit by the car and was flung into the air," he said. "She was a blonde-haired girl wearing a brown wig. When I ran over there, I saw the brown wig laying on the street."

He said he saw as many as seven people on the ground, but they were moving. He saw police open the truck's door, but he said they did not pull the driver then. He did not see the driver, he said, but he said his actions seemed like those of "a really pissed-off person in a truck that obviously didn't care about other people's lives."

Me too...the look in, who I assume, is her fathers eyes when he is holding her, the fear he has, no parent should face that fear...I have tears streaming and it makes me feel sick to my stomach.

And this whole thing just pisses me off so much. Is it so much to ask for people to be able to get together and enjoy fun times, without some nimrod doing something stupid?!? WHENEVER I go to New Orleans, I expect to sit in traffic if there is an event or hell, even if it's just a regular weekend. See those cars going slow buddy? Ever think there was a completely logical freaking reason they might be going slow?!? Don't want to sit in Maddie Gras traffic? Here's a real brilliant idea - stay at home and get plastered and let everyone else be safe from your poor choices. Sorry for the rant y'all, but I'm sat in bed with my 4 year old beside me, and it just strikes a nerve with me when people are so damn stupid and make these selfish decisions. And I'm sure there are people out there already judging him for having a child at Mardi Gras, not even knowing much about it or how much fun it can be for a family to gather up a spot on the grass or sidewalk and watch the bands and floats.

ETA: this young man better be glad there were so many cops there, I'm shocked he wasn't pulled out of that truck and beaten. Gah. This whole thing makes me sick.
