I thought I read there were Disney movies on a table next to her. I don't remember what else was nearby or what the parents said she did all day.

If only they had taken action many years ago! I don't understand it.
Maybe the DVDs were Disney and other kid movies:

Astonishingly, to the couch's right side is a gray commode and a neat pile of clothes.

And to the front, only a few feet away, is a cluttered low black table.

It is strewn with lotion bottles, some talcum powder, a pack of wipes, a nasal spray, a box with a lid that had a child's photo on it, and other items that make it appear the Fletchers had the resources to clean their stricken only child.

Between the sofa and table are two neatly stacked boxes of DVDs. It is not possible to discern the titles, but some appeared to be child-like from the covers.

Blades's son Robert told DailyMail.com: 'She became different. She just didn't see things the way a lot of other kids did.

'I last saw her around 15 years ago like my dad. I wouldn't say I was a particular friend. She'd hang out with my younger brother sometimes.

'But she was definitely different from other kids her age. I knew she was not your typical teenager.

'She was smart, she was as smart as hell. But I guess the best way to put it is that she wasn't as mature as us. She still liked children things, not teenage things.'

Robert added: 'When she was 17 or 18 she was more into Disney movies and country music.

'She did invite us over to watch Disney movies, despite being more withdrawn. But that wasn't my forte, I was 18. I used to ride motorcycles.'

Absolutely devastating. I can't wrap my head around how her parents could stand to see her rot away on the couch. Besides the obvious emotional disconnect that they would have to have in order to neglect her so badly, the physical aspect would be so difficult to manage as well. The sight and smell would be impossible to handle.

In the link above, in the interview with the neighbor, the reporter used the phrase "her autism accelerated." Based on my experience with my oldest son, autism doesn't accelerate. His autism has always been there. During the hormonal/teenage years there was one additional medication and extra counseling, but his autism has not changed. I think either some other diagnosis came into play or the parents just hid her at home so they didn't have to do the hard work required. My son holds down a good paying responsible job. He is no longer on additional medication. I do manage his finances with his permission because he just doesn't grasp how to do that and doesn't want to do it. But he supports himself and has good benefits. He will always have autism but he has a pretty good life. It's sad Lacey wasn't given an opportunity to have her own life, whatever it may have been.

Or did her social skills decline as a result of being housebound? I would think her autism would not accelerate but she would not be getting any PT/OT or any continued therapy/assistance that perhaps she had received at school.
No counseling during the teenage years....no medications to help with anxiety...it’s incredibly sad.

It's genuinely unfortunate that Lacey didn't have any support system to help her find, and learn to live with, a correct diagnosis to help improve her quality of life.

Maybe it was her anxiety and depression that accelerated, especially as she saw that no one was going to help her. The more I think about two parents both just letting her live endlessly on a couch, the more I really can't comprehend.

I absolutely will follow this trial in October.
But they might agree to a plea deal in order not to draw attention to the whole family.
I wonder.

I would be surprised if they let it go to trial, a lot of very horrible things that we don’t know would come to light and I can’t imagine they want that to happen.
With the details we have this case is already horrifying but then who knows what they will do.

Agreed. They already look horrible, so it can only get worse for them.

But still the details will appear in Judge's sentencing, no?

I have the impression that they consider themselves innocent.

So, they might try a trial to "clear their name" so to speak.

Time will tell, we all be here waiting, right?

I would assume so, but if they take a plea deal then they likely won't have to testify and explain their actions.

A criminal defendant is not required to testify, and that he elects not to testify cannot be used against him.

Sheila Fletcher walked out of the East Feliciana Parish jail in Clinton on a $300,000 bond Tuesday night, while her husband Clay was released on Wednesday morning, news station WBRZ reported.

The couple, both 64, face second-degree murder charges in the horrific Jan. 3 death of Lacey Ellen Fletcher, 36, who weighed less than 100 pounds when she was found on a ratty couch covered in urine and feces.

Lacey may have sat in her own filth for about 12 years, according to the coroner, Dr. Ewell Bickham. She was found covered in maggots and sores and “melted” into a hole in the living room couch of the family’s Slaughter home.

“The cause of death stemmed from severe medical neglect, which led to chronic malnutrition, acute starvation, immobility, acute ulcer formation, osteomyelitis, which is bone infection which led finally to sepsis."
“The last time she saw a physician of any type or any kind was when she was 16 years old,” he added.

The Fletchers were “adamant” that Lacey was “of sound mind to make her own type of decisions,” and claimed she never complained of her sores and that Sheila would routinely clean them, D’Aquilla said last week.

Are these two still out on bail? I wonder what life is like, walking around free, while everyone knows your most disgusting secret. Surely they aren't still living in *that* house? October can't come soon enough.

Dear @RaspberryMama,

Your avatar reminded me of a delicious raspberry dessert waiting for me in the fridge.

It is a season for these fruit in my country now and I eat them every day :)
As a child I picked raspberries in the forest while staying in the country at my grandparents' during holidays.
And I never brought a full basket home, as I was eating them on my way :)
Beautiful memories!

As for "these two" - October can't come soon enough!!

I am sure they still live in the house - they don't seem to be bothered.
After all, they lived there for months after Lacey's death.

MOO

I’m still surprised that no one (that I’ve seen, at least - I’m not active on social media) has come forward with some tidbits. Food delivery person, landscaper, former postal carrier. There was a classmate or two and a neighbor who asked about Lacey, but that’s all I’ve seen. The parents seemed to have active social/professional lives.

People in small communities are usually tight lipped.

Mind their own business and eye Press people suspiciously.

You know - what happens in a family, stays in a family.

People minding their own business is why Lacey had no one left, in the end. (I'm not blaming anyone who couldn't have known, only those who should have.)

Precisely. I was listening to a podcast earlier about a different case (Turpin family) that made a point to remind people that if you see something, say something. Don't be afraid to be that nosy neighbor, etc etc.

At the very least authorities would go do a safety check. So yes, its very important to be aware of what's going on around oneself. Who knows if that had happened in this case maybe a different outcome would have occurred and she would still be alive.
