Hearing frustration that construction on the barriers near Bourbon Street was happening during such a critical time of New Years and right before the Super Bowl.

The Sugar Bowl has been postponed until tomorrow

I think that’s a good move. I’m sure logistically it’s an absolute nightmare to postpone it, but we don’t want stressed officials trying to hurry to secure things in less than a day. I can see being like “there’s no way we can be confident the site is safe that fast”

WDSU (New Orleans) is live on YouTube. They have obtained and are showing video of the truck going AROUND an NOPD vehicle that was blocking Bourbon Street. It goes up on the sidewalk then swerves back into the street. Looks like the NOPD was serving as a blockade since the bollard(s) were down. But that didn’t stop the suspect.

Yeah, first they’d want to do their due diligence, and make sure this is in fact a one-off lone wolf attack as it appears to be.

Secondly, it’s a real bad look to hold that event as scheduled in light of what just happened.

I wonder if that's to secure the stadium. The sad thing is that many of those who have tickets and are in the city may not be able to attend tomorrow.
I'd rather miss a football game than be a victim in a terrorist attack. I think they should reschedule the game at a later date than tomorrow to disrupt any potential plans. It's a football game. It can wait.

There's a cynical part of me that thinks perhaps "maintenance" is just an excuse and the real reason the permanent barricades weren't in place is because during times of heaviest pedestrian traffic, it's easier to move vehicles through the area as needed for various reasons (incl police/EMT/delivery vehicles etc) if the permanent/concrete barriers aren't in place.

It has implications well beyond a single game, as it would throw the remainder of the college football playoffs into turmoil.

It’ll be more secure than anywhere else after this.

Have LE said if they think the now-deceased perp is the one who planted any suspicious packages or do they suspect he had help?

FBI Statement on the Attack in New Orleans

Today, at approximately 3:15 a.m. CST, an individual drove a pickup truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing at least 10 and injuring dozens of others. After hitting the crowd, he exited the vehicle and fired upon local law enforcement. Law enforcement returned fire, and the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two law enforcement officers were injured and transported to a local hospital.

The subject has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas. He was driving a Ford pickup truck, which appears to have been rented, and we are working to confirm how the subject came into possession of the vehicle.

An ISIS flag was located in the vehicle, and the FBI is working to determine the subject's potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations.

Weapons and a potential IED were located in the subject’s vehicle. Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter. The FBI’s special agent bomb technicians are working with our law enforcement partners to determine if any of these devices are viable, and they will work to render those devices safe. "

I think it's kind of rare for a US veteran to become radicialized unless something bad happened in his life. And, isn't 42 kind of old to be a suicide terrorist?
All MOO
The Oklahomla City bombers. The Lewiston Maine shooter. Both Fort Hood shooters.

Just a few comments I have about the military and people like this guy who served time and then end up committing horrific acts..

I don't know that the military creates these people. I think this type of person is attracted to the military. I am married to a servicemember and my son also is a servicemember. I've been surrounded by servicemembers for over 20 years now in many places all over the US. They get all kinds that join the military and often those that are "off" are weeded out early on. Failure to adapt and/or they get in some trouble and get kicked out. Some are just good at hiding whatever makes them like this. I know Israel Keyes was in the Army also.

Those that are impacted by their time in the military and come out with mental health struggles usually only want to harm themselves. We see that WAY more often than anything like this.
Here is statement before congress about terrorist groups and veteran recruitment. https://www.congress.gov/117/meeting/house/113968/witnesses/HHRG-117-VR00-Wstate-JonesS-20211013.pdf

In additional is Israel Keyes, many serial killers were in the military. Berkowitz, Ridgeway, Dennis Rader, Rany Kraft, so many others.

Exactly!!!

And, of course, the perp took the instant advantage.

But, on the other hand,
he would have chosen another vulnerable
place if the barriers had been installed there.

He was in the "mood"
and the place could have been anywhere.

:(

ABC News reports that two of the victims were Israeli nationals. A representative of the Israeli Consulate in Houston and the Southwest is “on his way to New Orleans,” at the direction of the Israeli Foreign Minister, a spokesman told ABC.

Just got home from out of town for New Year’s and I’m not caught up, but there’s a presser right now..ISIS terrorist and apparently the barricades were not up? US citizen from Texas? They think he didn’t work alone?

I’ll go catch up here after the presser.

God help the families of the dead and prayers for the injured.

Presser Update:

Suspect is in fact US born.

ISIS flag located on trailer hitch of vehicle.

Weapons and IED's found in vehicle and other locations of French Quarter. Two have been destroyed.

Do not believe he was solely responsible

They don’t believe he was working alone as per the press conference. Asking for tips on possible associates.
