What we know about the suspect in the New Orleans attack

The suspect in a deadly attack in New Orleans has been identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. citizen from Texas, according to the FBI.

Carter told ABC News that the suspect appears to have "lived or spent some time" in the New Orleans area.

"My understanding is there may have been some identification that indicated that the suspect had a local residence and so that information is being tested," he said.

If only we never woke up to one of these senseless acts again. I went to sleep shortly after the New York Times Square celebration (shortly after the ball dropped and memorable songs were on with video of people celebrating). I was safe, warm and happy that all celebrations seemed to go without incident. When I awoke, DH greeted me with "Did you hear about New Orleans?" and all is shattered once again. Sad. Thinking about the people lost today and praying for healing for everyone injured, especially those officers that reacted quickly to neutralize the threat. Darn it!

The driver who plowed into crowds in New Orleans was flying an ISIS flag on his truck, CNN reports.
"The attacker was flying a flag from the back of his pickup truck. Truck has Texas plates. Police covered up the flag with a jacket immediately! What flag is it???"
Newsweek has reached out to the New Orleans Police Department and the FBI by phone for comment.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The man accused of the deadly New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street has been identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42. Law enforcement sources confirmed the suspect’s identity to Fox 8 just before noon on Wednesday, Jan. 1. The FBI later confirmed the identity.
The truck used in the attack had a Texas license plate and was carrying an ISIS flag, according to the FBI. A handgun, an AR-style rifle, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found inside.

It would appear that he was on a mission.

He has (imo) from the 9/11/01 attack -- Mohammed Atta eyes, looks angry and vengeful.
Other photos elsewhere show Shamsud with a benign expression, so maybe he was radicalized very recently ; if that's what happened.
Or was it : a job loss, divorce, an injustice collector ?

Why did Shamsud do this .
Still don't know the motive for certain, but waiting for an update from LE/FBI.
My .02 is that he was a lone wolf, the hardest to spot as they may live normal lives with zero signs that they'll commit an atrocity.

With barriers down for construction - why couldn’t New Orleans use dump trucks or other vehicles to block Bourbon Street?Seen the trucks used at lots of events.

Have the FBI said it was indeed a terrorist attack meaning there could be more ?
Going to guess here that LE did have some sort of concrete barriers, after what happened in Germany.
Was the perp able to drive around them somehow ?

It makes me furious that innocent people with lives and hopes and dreams can't get together for a celebration without some monster killing them & shattering the lives of their loved ones.
Not to mention the injured who could still pass.
Praying for their swift healing, physical and emotional !

Can't allow ourselves to become complacent.
Not saying the outdoor organizers at New Orleans were -- they may have had safety measures in place including checking backpacks, etc.
The Christmas festival in Germany should have been a serious warning of danger at outdoor events.
It would seem nowhere is safe.

BBM, all covered up thread. No barriers. They were down and it’s been reported they were in the process of being replaced. Hazard cones and police cars were blocking the street, he drove around them.

Sounds it with the fire etc, he can’t have started the blaze, he has others helping him
