Seems they probably shut down his facebook before releasing his name publicy. Otherwise the incendiary threatening content he posted would've been archived or at least discussed somewhere, and I haven't seen that.
Pretty sure that's the case. I read some complaints about it being shut down.

Why go from TX to Bourbon Street?
This was a very specific location..

From your post: how he had at first planned

Am I understanding that he states he planned to gather his family (Plan #1)
but
instead decided to drive across state lines for hours and mass murder strangers. (Plan #2)

There is a recent case where someone has a Plan 1 (bomb) but it would kill too many so he justified to himself a Plan 2 (execute a CEO)
My gut feeling that New Orleans is know for it’s joire de vie and party place atmosphere. The French Quarter is usually crowded where the people may let their guard down.

Also I wonder what the media reports mean by the facebook content being published by the suspect "the night before the attack"?
Do they mean NYE before the attack (so, a few hours before)?
Or do they mean "night before" as in the night of Dec 30?
I wonder if anyone in his life that saw the FB posts reported him to authorities...

what does that mean about the lock code? does it mean he wouldn't have needed keys so could just rent online never having met the owner who was renting it out? I'm not familiar with new electric trucks or private rentals

Jabbar, a US citizen and Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, made reference in the videos to his divorce and how he had at first planned to gather his family for a “celebration” with the intention of killing them, two officials who had been briefed on the recordings said. But Jabbar said in the videos that he changed his plans and joined ISIS, and referenced several dreams that he had about why he should be joining the terrorist group, according to the officials.

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – United Way of Southeast Louisiana (UWSELA) Wednesday launched the United for New Orleans Relief Fund to support victims, their families and partner organizations assisting in the aftermath of the New Year’s Day attack on New Orleans

Additionally, resources are available online at ovc.ojp.gov/help-for-victims/terrorism-and-mass-violence for victims of terrorism and mass violence

Imam Fahmee Al-Uqdah, who says he has known Jabbar’s family for decades, told NewsNation that the family is shocked and they’re saddened and very surprised and embarrassed, all at the same time.”

Serving in the military taught Jabbar “the meaning of great service and what it means to be responsive and take everything seriously, dotting i’s and crossing t’s to make sure that things go off without a hitch,” he said in the YouTube video, which has since been taken offline. He sat in the video next to a framed poster with the word “Discipline” in bold, and near a book titled “Leadership.”

Al-Uqdah was a longtime family friend of Jabbar's, and he said he served in the military for 10 years.

"The training of the military align so much with the our Islamic belief as far as discipline, orderliness , and respect for authority," said Al-Uqdah.
Beliefs like this is why Al-Uqdah says he cannot wrap his head around Jabbar's abhorrent actions.

"I'd love to get my hands on who ever influenced him to think that such an act or acts that he did was were okay. It's not okay, it has everything to do with hatred and bigotry," said Al-Uqdah.

Al-Uqdah has a message for those who lost loved ones in the attack.
"The Jabbar family is deeply grieved by what has happened and send condolences to those killed," said Al-Uqda

One issue in my mind is if he wanted to create mayhem why did he (they?) wait until 3:15 am? I am assuming the streets would be full of people prior and around midnight NYE.
Perhaps there was a greater concentration of LE in the area at that time, anticipating maximum crowd size. Just a thought.

"What we are seeing is a quick reminder that international terrorism is still very much present in the US that Americans are being radicalized to follow an ideology against our United States," said del Carmen.

On Dec. 6th, the FBI, Homeland Security, and the National Counterterrorism Center warned local law enforcement about concerns about vehicle ramming during significant outdoor events this holiday season.

Del Carmen also believes there is a connection between the attack in New Orleans and the CyberTruck explosion in Vegas.

"When I look at that, the probability versus the possibility of something happening, you know, in this particular case, there's no way this could be completely isolated from one another," del Carmen said

Del Carmen said it can often begin with someone who has a perceived issue or grievance with the U.S. government and, over time, consumes more propaganda from foreign entities, like terrorist organizations.

"They watch these videos that have been, sadly, presented by foreign entities, which are in some cases doctored or modified to try to show some sort of a reality that doesn't really exist," del Carmen said. "But they believe it. They buy into it."

Abdur Jabbar, 24, of Beaumont, Texas, told The New York Times that his brother Shasmud-Din Jabbar — who killed at least 15 people in the New Year’s Day attack — converted to Islam at an early age.

The younger Jabbar told the newspaper that what his brother “did does not represent Islam. This is more some type of radicalization, not religion.”

thanks for sharing. Wow.. that is the ultimate set up for criminal acts.. (obviously it makes 1,000s or 10,000s of people's interactions easier..) but the fact can rent without even meeting someone in person means this approach will likely be taken by many new evil doers etc. Not sure how to combat, can't imagine a total banning of this remote unlocking though

Hoping that maybe he had some sense of humanity and chose that time because fewer children would be there.

Believe it or not but it's precisely how radicalization unravels in most cases. Very rarely the faith is the principal motive behind terrorist acts and very often it's none at all. You fail, you loose the sense of belonging and self-worth, you start to blame others for your own failures in life, start to feel resentment towards other people and institutions etc.

And radical movements like radical Islam know perfectly well how to work out such a person. They offer them explanations which make them feel important and part of something meaningful again. And they acknowledge their resentment but with a different spin - that's why it's much easier to work with people with some identities (especially historically wronged identities).

For e.g.: you're a Muslim? that's why it happened to you, they only pretend they are tolerant, in reality they were looking down at you the whole time but you were blind (think for a moment, I'm sure you can find some examples you were in doubt). Look what they have done in The Middle East, it goes like that for centuries with The West . And here is some (possibly fake) fragment from scripture. No, you don't need to be true believer, but it's your culture, your real roots.

And here is a picture of children massacred in Gaza Strip. Look at it. And ask yourself what the West is doing about that? It supplies bombs! Do you still believe they see you as their equal? Do you? Do you see now? They all are to blame! etc.

It's not done in one day. It's not like - here you've got a car and now go and kill a lot of innocent people. It's a process which takes years. It's akin to brainwashing.

In this case the attacker had huge difficulties to transition into civilian life after years of military service. Yes, he had worked in administration (IT) but nevertheless it gave him a sense of identity and belonging, which he lost. He complained about bureaucracy in institutions which should help veterans to find their way on the market. He couldn't make ends meet. He divorced! He had some brushes with the law. He was - in all probability - egocentric, envious, grudgeful and at the same time - gullible person. We can see how such a person can become radicalized.

U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) wrote a letter to Chairman-elect Rand Paul of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, demanding the Biden Administration be held accountable following a New Year’s Eve terrorist-linked attack on New Orleans’ famed Bourbon Street.
Senator Hawley wrote, “They must give a full account of this attack and any departmental failures related to the incident.”

What failures would HS have? Would it not be more failures with the State of Texas or local Texas police?
Thank you for sharing that @Trino …… and I agree with you entirely.

Respectfully, and sadly, IMO seems we should be honoring and remembering the unsuspecting victims of this horrid criminal activity in New Orleans, Louisiana. And letting the FBI and other investigators determine what occurred.

As to the apparent statement from Senator Hawley from Missouri, probably best that I stop here.

There is an old adage or quote often attributed to Mark Twain:

It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.”

MOO

I've been wrestling with this as well. I also wonder why, if he was on a suicide mission, he wore body armor. My only thoughts are that maybe by 3:00 AM there was less police presence and the body armor would help him survive longer to get more victims. But that is only my own opinion.

IMHO, the late night meant he could get easier access to the street and rev to his target speed. More people would mean less opportunity to go further. I think he calculated the optimal damage time. Late night drinkers in bars are less aware and alert for the most part bc they are partying and hanging out as well.
