I don't think that's entirely accurate if you read the descriptions:

ETA: The tradition of a funeral procession/honor with brass instruments is very much associated with New Orleans too.
So heartbreaking.

Matthew Tenedorio, 25, died from his injuries after a terror attack suspect plowed through crowds celebrating the New Year on Bourbon Street.

According to ASM New Orleans, Tenedorio was a video production department employee and had a bright future with the company.

ASM issued the following statement regarding his passing:

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that took so many innocent lives in our city yesterday morning. One of those lives taken too early was 25-year-old Matthew Tenedorio an ASM New Orleans team member who worked in the video production department at Caesars Superdome and the Smoothie King Center. Matthew had a bright future and was able to learn and work alongside his father Louis Tenedorio, a dedicated team member in our video production department for 11-years.

As the street reopened, a fan of the Notre Dame college football team yelled : "Go fighting Irish! We love life! So let's live!"

Brian Williams, a Georgia supporter, told the BBC that "the bad guys would have won" if the game had been cancelled or further postponed after the attack.

"Nowhere will be safer than New Orleans now," he said, as he gestured at a small group of state troopers on Bourbon Street. "There's nothing to worry about."

Like other football fans in town for the game, Mr Williams said the mood was sombre when he arrived in town early Wednesday.

"It felt off. It felt weird to be out in town, and we couldn't even get to Bourbon Street," Mr Williams said. "But this place will be back to normal soon."

The governor countered by posting, “It’s important to understand that we have many visitors in the city of New Orleans right now. Safety is our top priority and we want our guests and the world to know that Louisiana does not cower to radical islamic terrorists. Our restaurants and all New Orleans has to offer remain open for business!”

“You should delete this post! It’s incredibly insensitive!” posted @Patriotmom717.

“Dude. Several of your constituents are no longer alive due to a terrorist attack and you thought going out to a steak house with friends and then posting about it was a good idea? Fire yourself,” posted @BurtMaclin_FBI.

“15 people are dead in NOLA and you’re bragging about your steak dinner?” @FaxanFM asked.

"Thoughts and prayers" really makes me grind my teeth with the uselessness of it as a platitude in the aftermath of a mass casualty attack, but I've officially found something worse. A newsreaderish "so, anyway..." smashcut promoting tourism and business.

MOO

I have been a member of this platform for a while but never have I been personally involved in a topic.

This is MOO my personal family experience perspective of this terrorist attack.

To start off.
My sister survived this attack.

First off, I’d like to share that she texted me early in the night to reassure me of the excessive police presence. That she felt very good about it and safe that night and that the city was really making a huge effort to keep people safe for new years.

As we all know now. It wasn’t going to be enough to stop the attack that was unfortunately coming.

She was in the hotel /bar first floor directly to the right where he crashed into the crane and then stepped out the truck and began to fire. (The image circulating media of crash location) She saw everything. Except him driving down the street running over innocent people moments prior. After she heard and saw the Crash into the crane she looked over the bar out to attempt to see what In the world the crash and commotion was and immediately heard significant amounts of gunfire. It was the amount of gunfire that was her and others initial realization something really terrible was happening just feet from her. We now know this is when he began to immediately fire upon others and LE following the crash. As shots began , she immediately instinctively hit the ground face down with others and army crawled to a nearby very small utility/supply closet to hide and take cover with two others. Others in the bar began dive and jump over anything they could to seek cover as well. While locked in the extremely small closet she continues hearing more gunfire briefly but mainly screams and cry’s of pure terror from others. Again. This happened very quickly and gunfire didn’t last very long.

According to her. Upon gunfire ending and waiting a few minutes to make sure it was okay to come out… she decided to come out of closet and stepped outside to see the absolute horrific scene. Dead bodies, many mangled bodies and A large number of injured people.

But most importantly she saw the Isis flag. Hanging from the back of the crashed truck. The doors where she walked out, lined up almost directly to the back of the truck where the flag was hanging. She didn’t immediately connect it to Isis but it registered to her in that moment as a terrorist flag. I cannot say when it was hung. But it was hung during the attack. Others saw it as well. Which was when LE and others forced her back inside to take cover and find safety in case the attack was not over. Then someone with her confirmed he saw the flag and was sure it Isis and he was certain of it. This amplified everyone’s fear.

What she saw on that street, carnage, terror the absolute worst brutality and human suffering you can imagine. No one should ever see. And can never unsee. I just can’t stress enough that in her details everything just happened so very fast followed by horror and confusion and helplessness and fear.

I’m extremely grateful she wasn’t injured and miraculously managed to stay calm and level headed.

I’d personally like to thank god, and all the LE and good samaritans there that risked their lives to take out this evil terrorist and save the lives of so many others there. I cannot imagine what would have happened had the bomb device in his truck detonated. That thought chills me to the my core.

I pray that the FBI uncovers every aspect of this attack and any all involved are brought to justice.

My genuine thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims, their families and those who witnessed or were apart of this attack.

I pray for safety, healing , peace and justice for everyone involved.

Words are inadequate, @EBW321.

Very grateful your sister was not physically harmed, but this is definitely a traumatic event that will likely force her to see her life as “before” and “after.”

Yet, it’s a blessing that she will in fact have a life to live, “after.”

I knew 10 people who died on 9/11. No one close like my own sister, but my best friend’s brother did die there.

I also joined WS because people I knew from high school went missing in the 70s and are still missing, and I found a forum about them here.

You seem to be a very loving and supportive sibling, and it’s wonderful that she has comfort and is willing to seek help if needed.

An engineer who worked on the bollard replacement project, who spoke to NBC News on the condition of anonymity because the team was not authorized to speak publicly, said there was “a mad dash to rush this job” so it could be done in time for the Super Bowl, scheduled for Feb. 9.
bollards new orleans terror attack

New Orleans plans to replace the bollards on Bourbon Street from Canal Street to St. Ann Street with “new removable stainless-steel bollards” that could be securely locked behind each crosswalk, according to the city website.

The big picture: Vehicle attacks are becoming more common because they're incredibly simple and extremely difficult to prevent, experts warn.
  • Experts told Axios that terror group ISIS in particular helped popularize using vehicles as weapons.
State of play: The New Orleans tragedy came less than two weeks after a car attack at a German Christmas market killed five and injured more than 200.

Ramming attacks emerged as a terrorism tactic in the 1990s with Palestinian groups.
  • At that time, groups like Al Qaeda favored spectacular, sophisticated mass casualty attacks, Javed Ali, a former counterterrorism official who teaches at the University of Michigan, said.
  • ISIS' emergence presented a "very significant philosophical shift for jihadist operations" where attackers used "whatever means they could."
  • In 2016, ISIS outlined how adherents outside the Middle East could attack using "vehicles that unexpectedly mount their busy sidewalks" in its online magazine, Rumiyah
  • According to the Mineta Transportation Institute's study of 184 vehicle attacks between 1963 and September 2019, 70% occurred after Jan. 1, 2014.
  • While there is no one cause for the increase in attacks, one big factor stands out: Cars are abundant, readily available and can easily be used as a deadly weapon.
  • These attacks followed a similar template, Clancy said: rent a vehicle, weigh it down, ram into a group of people, and then get out with weapons to inflict more damage.
  • Jabbar drove a rented F-150 Lightning, which weighs over 1,000 pounds more than a conventional Ford pickup truck and provides instant acceleration
"Because these are so statistically rare, it's very hard to put in place a policy designed to specifically stop them that doesn't have an unintended consequence higher than the cost of the act itself," he said. "And that's a hard balancing act

Federal officials and local law enforcement agencies in New Orleans are investigating whether Jabbar used a long-gun rifle and fired it into the crowd as he ran people over, three senior law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation told NBC News.

A woman who identified herself as Jabbar’s sister-in-law and asked not to be named said relatives in Texas were in shock when they heard the news.

It makes “no sense,” she said. “He’s the nicest person I’ve ever known.”

“I really don’t know what happened,” she added. “He was a good man. He takes care of his children and everything.”

She said some family members were heading from Texas to New Orleans.

Of course this does keep happening on repeat so it’s obviously very appealing to many either way this mindset but imagine going rent a car shopping for something that will crush the most humans faster. So messed up! MOO

In the blink of an eye life never same again for fifteen families plus the ongoing injuries and trauma of survivors and first responders. Thinking of them all

In response to many posts regarding the Sugar Bowl today and keeping Bourbon St. open, I have to admit to having extremely mixed emotions.

I recall Mayor Giuliani, on the afternoon of 9/11, telling us that NYC would still be here in the morning. I recall many public figures urging us to “not let the terrorists win.” That actually became a constant refrain.

Yet it was very cognitively dissonant. We had hysterical students whose parents worked at the WTC, we had parents in a steady stream taking their children out of school, and the schools were closed on September 12th.

On September 13th, it felt like trampling on the dead to live life as normally as possible, in between the funerals we attended.

I’m still unsettled as to what is the best way forward any time there is a terrorist attack.

JMO and experience.

I don’t want to hear from family about what a great guy he was.
From the looks of his trailer i would not allow children to visit him.

Yes truly odd when you consider he declared his initial plans to kill his friends and family. Hardly an angel of peace was he. Goes to show no one really ever knows someone!

Others here have kindly pointed out how large that base is (52000) and they may never have been there at same time - looks like the trump bomber was specifically anti trump whilst the New Orleans massacre was Islamic terror inspired. So I guess not, but the odds do feel far fetched in numerical terms I agree!
And both rented vehicles from a private rideshare rental company that is not extremely well known imo/ime. I wasn’t even familiar with the concept, much less the company and from reading here, most others weren’t either. Same day/timeframe, same private rental company, similar MO in the sense that the vehicles were actively used to carry out the attacks and contained explosives, and same military base. Just a TON of coincidences. Nothing to see here folks! There’s no way these were NOT related on at least some base level imo and it feels like a diversion is being created by saying they weren’t.

Numerically feels unlikely but new year is a big day for so many and related to mental health problems or life evaluations too - popular for terrorists as many out revelling, but also a period of reflection, imbibement and impulsive acts. There seems nothing Islamic related about the trump bomber. I agree with the family interviews suggesting it was a crude effort for a man of his training - he would have known an armoured vehicle would not explode like other cars. Moreover it didn’t seem much planning went into his propane gas and fireworks - easily purchasable.

JMO but I think the app represents convenience at a time many rental places are on holiday/closed
