I will note that using vehicles to run through crowds of people seems to be a favorite tactic for terror attacks in Europe.
Real terror attacks by real terrorists with real terrorist intent. Not homegrown crap.

Don’t forget Charlottesville. Nice homegrown crap right there.

Call me crazy, but even if the motive is ‘kill lots of people at once’ without a distinct sociopolitical ideology, I think it should still be considered terrorism - just in the name of chaos, not religion or political motives. MOO.

ETA: a word
I consider it terrorism, but that's just how I feel and not a legal definition. I do understand the FBI's concern with rumors and false narratives. The Waukesha parade attack comes to mind. Some rushed to incorrectly label it a racially motivated attack, which could have fueled a misplaced public furor.

There is a flag mounted on the trailer hitch - see the photos. In all photos I have seen, it has been curled up on itself. Anyone know what the flag is?

Wasn’t that categorized/charged as a hate crime? As opposed to a terrorist act?

I’m glad you identified that as a possible flag.
My brain kept trying to make that a pole with a video camera on it.
I think I need to stop thinking about this for awhile.

You are correct.
From Wikipedia, James Alex Fields Jr. was convicted of the following:

I spy a cursive bumper sticker on the tailgate of first pic on the DailyMail article, to the left top of the tailgate by the light.

An FBI agent said, “ it was not a terrorist event at this point in the investigation.”
Shouldn't they have said that it was undetermined? Also, if the FBI knew at least as much as the mayor, how could she say yes and they no?

Before I stop thinking about this for awhile:
The license plate and number on this truck is clear as day.
Unless the truck is stolen, LE and the news media know who this person is and likely know their motive.

That's exactly what "it was not a terrorist event at this point in the investigation" means.

Now, they’re reporting at least one IED was found in the vehicle. Was this guy planning a bigger event?
Im assuming he wanted them to go off during the crash.

Theres no way he planned on being able to escape to a secondary location after bourbon street

I think the mayor was irresponsible in declaring it a terrorist attack before the facts were known, JMO.

Listening to several different national media reports it has been stated that the mayor shouldn’t have immediately declared it a terrorist attack. They attributed it to her inexperience. JMO

IMO it could also be understood that there were early indications that it wasn't a terrorist event.

Is this the biggest US mass casuality event since Lewiston in 2023?

This article was helpful in explaining why Domestic Terrorism Charges do not technically exist under US law (federally).

FBI labeling an incident as Terrorism gives broad power to the government to thoroughly investigate not just the perpetrator, but also any known associates. However, no Federal level statute explicitly labels 'Domestic Terrorism' as a crime. A caveat to this, is that if the individual belongs to one of about 60 groups that the State Department has already labeled terrorist entities, then federal charges of individual Terrorism on behalf of these groups can be brought about.

It could, but knowing how law enforcement agencies communicate (all around the world), it was rather obvious it meant: as of now we're not yet at the point to state such determination publicly. Meaning: we may be leaning towards some conclusion, but it's premature to make it an official standpoint (there are still some substantial unknowns which need to be resolved first).
