Heaven Sensky-Kirsch said her father endured 10 hours of surgery on Wednesday and was removed from a ventilator, according to the Associated Press. He was ejected from the wheelchair he has used since a 1999 car accident and also sustained bruises to his face and head,
Ms. Sensky-Kirsch told the AP in a phone interview from a hospital intensive care unit.
Mr. Sensky went to New Orleans to celebrate the holiday, his daughter said.
Mr. Sensky and two friends were eating pizza before the attack and he left the group to return to his Canal Street hotel because he was feeling cold, Ms. Sensky-Kirsch said.
She said some people reported seeing the attacker coming and were able to get out of the way, but Mr. Sensky “was stuck in the road.” His wheelchair can be seen in some images posted on social media, lodged against a crane.
When he didn’t return to the hotel, his group went to look for him, Ms. Sensky-Kirsch said.
“We thought he was dead,” she said. “We can’t believe he’s alive.”
