Get by with it? The inquiry was about the location of security cameras on the property he'd lived at for two years -- not any property located in NO.

From the quoted MSM link:

The worker described Jabbars’ demeanor as sad. He said Jabbar lived at the home alone, was nice and typically kept to himself. The only strange interaction he had was when Jabbar asked him where all of the security cameras were on the property and where they were pointed two days before he moved out.

Right, that’s what I meant. Was he worried that he would be caught taking his loot to his truck. Someone intercepting him before he even started?

I am so confused. We are being directed to pay attention to a blue cooler and yet there appears to be something that looks like one in The Tesla explosion video from the press conference. Screenshot from video in the article. 6 seconds into the video

Video Source ABCNEWS from Official Press conference.

Are you referring to this?

I’m glad we opened,” said Charles Weber, co-owner of The Alibi Bar and Grill. “They’re not gonna win, they’re not gonna beat us, we’re gonna open up.
“We don’t want them to win,” he added.''

“I’ve been working in the Quarter off and on for 40 years and the only thing I can think about was that could’ve been me and all I have is me and my mom and she’s 80 years old almost,” he added.

A day later, Weber was happy to see people back on the street, including the added police presence and security measures.

“We’re gonna get through this just like we got through Covid, just like we got through Katrina 20 years ago, we’re gonna come back. This city is here to stay. Sales might be down a little bit, you might not have as many people, but this is not going to stop the city of New Orleans,” he said.

“That’s what we do. We’re resilient, we’re gonna pull through, and we gonna get back to work,” Weber said.''

So I poked around a turo group to ask about how insurance works.
  • For the car owner there is $750,000 of liability insurance through Traveler's Insurance provided by Turo. Obviously this would exceed that. There is also insurance for vehicle replacement, at varying levels of deductible depending on how much of the rental proceeds you give to Turo. I assume that if the renter is at fault, Turo's insurance would go after the renter for that money, which leads to...
  • For the renter there are a few different "protection plans" that can be selected, adding to the cost of the rental. They offer different levels of coverage for the car if there's an accident or other damage, with different deductibles and exclusions.
It's not clear if acts of terrorism are covered. Sometimes insurance will specifically exclude acts of terrorism. Someone On The Internet claimed to have skimmed the agreement and didn't see anything about terrorism, but said they couldn't 100% guarantee it's not in there.

Bbm.
Well, that would be an interesting read in fine print !
Maybe it would be worded to say if the vehicle is used in the commission of a crime-- you, the renter, are liable ?
Imo.

No, the one in the explosion video. A short version in tweet attached.
ETA: I posed the question on the Tesla thread as not to mix it with this case. It was this case however that began referencing blue coolers.
It was a bystander with the cooler. I slowed the video to .25. The person appeared shocked and started to run for cover

Blue is probably the most common color of ice chest/cooler, along with red. imo it's not significant that a blue cooler showed up in both cases, just a coincidence.

  • #868
I don't think that's entirely accurate if you read the descriptions:

ETA: The tradition of a funeral procession/honor with brass instruments is very much associated with New Orleans too.
BBM. Yes, we got the luck to experience a "Second Line Parade" when we were in N.O. in 2019. They are a joyous celebration. I think holding the Sugar Bowl and re-opening Bourbon Street are a way of saying "We are NOLA strong" like Boston did. We aren't going to let terrorism defeat us.

"Prayer mats, an open Koran and a dart board:

Items ISIS-supporting New Orleans terrorist Shamsud Din-Jabbar
left behind in his squalid Houston home."

In just a few short years, he went from a 6-figure income, to living like this?

Just out of curiosity would an insurance company pay for damages to this vehicle because it was used in the commission of a crime?
These kinds of things can get very, very complicated.

Window dressing for him, rather than an actual radicalization. I wasn't suggesting or minimizing the damage that ISIS has caused worldwide. If his name had been Owen Calloway and he'd driven a truck through a crowd of revelers the issue of ISIS wouldn't have been raised. But Shamsud din Jabbar? The ISIS connection becomes a kneejerk reaction and he accommodated people's perceptions. I could be completely wrong and that's okay. So far we've heard he may have had an accomplice and now LE seem to believe he was working alone. Alone with the input from ISIS? Or alone/alone? We all know that ISIS and other terrorist organizations love to claim responsibility when these events occur whether they were involved or not. Giving their blessing for these massacres gets people wondering without ever knowing. Driving to New Orleans he claimed he joined ISIS and proclaimed his support. Authorities are still sifting through his online footprint and his electronics to find evidence.
My question is---why should we minimise the impact of ISIS radicalisation when we see it in action ?

We have video of him driving to NoLa, actually saying he was doing this violence in support of ISIS. He had the ISIS black flag on his truck. He was posting in support of ISIS on his social media.

Why stick our heads in the sand and pretend it is not a viable threat to our nation?

We need to do some preventative steps in order to combat this type of thinking and radicalisation. We should not normalise aggressive Islamic takeovers of our Universities and our church events or holidays. People should be arrested and/or fined for those kinds of hate crimes. We need to stand up against this type of civil unrest and make it clear that we will not stand for it anymore.

Well, you could draw endless parallels between various unrelated murder cases that are discussed on this website. Not because the cases are connected, but because they are the same type of crime. Naturally there are going to be similarities in these two targeted suicidal attacks.

I have come to believe that the only thing in common is that two successful US Military men failed in the civilian world, and felt as if they needed to go out in a blaze of glory. And New Year's Day became their symbolic "right time"

Neither of these are terrorists.

The driver was a terrorist, IMO. He purposely drove into a crowd of people in order to slaughter them and terrorise our country.

Did you see the INSTRUCTIONS put out by ISIS to their followers? They specifically ordered their followers to consider driving into a crowd and killing as many as possible in order to create fear and terror.

He hung an ISIS flag on the truck to make sure they got the credit. So how is the LoLa attack not terrorism?

Who's letting him off easy? He's a mass murderer. Nobody is letting him off easy. But I wonder whether the ISIS flag is just a prop he used to not only kill people but to strike fear in the hearts of Americans because of the visceral reaction they have to it. It's the same as carrying a swastika. Two hundred overweight incels marching down the street bitching about the lack of female companionship doesn't have much of an effect but put a Nazi flag in their hands, then the whole vibe changes. It's called marketing.
He drove into the crowd because of his radical Islamist beliefs. The flag wasn't just a prop. It was his philosophical motivation. It gave him a reason to throw his wretched life away and take as many innocents along with him as possible.

I am not going to let radical Islamists off easy and pretend they don't create death and horror in this world. Look at the nightmare of the Christmas Market massacre in Germany last month. It's not just 'marketing' ----it is violent hatred of the West by radical terrorists seeking power over us. I am not going to pretend it is 'no big deal.'

IMO it's terrorism regardless if his personal problems set off or sped up his radicalization or not. He did not pretend to be an Islamic extremist. If he was just a peace-loving Muslim (reports say he was devout), he would not have tried to kill as many innocent people as he could. This goes for all other terrorists driven by hate.

Detailed history of his family life:

Apparently he had been married three times. He filed for divorce in the second and third marriage. Reportedly his father is often quoting the Bible online, so perhaps the perp wasn't Muslim by birth.

I have been wondering about this as well, especially since the vehicle was used FOR terrorism and not damaged from someone else inflicting terrorism.

Prayers up for a full recovery for Mr. Sensky, a Pittsburgh-area resident who was visiting New Orleans.

A Canonsburg man was among those injured in the deadly attack in New Orleans early New Years’ Day that has left at least 15 dead.

[…]
Heaven Sensky-Kirsch said her father endured 10 hours of surgery on Wednesday and was removed from a ventilator, according to the Associated Press. He was ejected from the wheelchair he has used since a 1999 car accident and also sustained bruises to his face and head, Ms. Sensky-Kirsch told the AP in a phone interview from a hospital intensive care unit.

Mr. Sensky went to New Orleans to celebrate the holiday, his daughter said.
Mr. Sensky and two friends were eating pizza before the attack and he left the group to return to his Canal Street hotel because he was feeling cold, Ms. Sensky-Kirsch said.

She said some people reported seeing the attacker coming and were able to get out of the way, but Mr. Sensky “was stuck in the road.” His wheelchair can be seen in some images posted on social media, lodged against a crane.

When he didn’t return to the hotel, his group went to look for him, Ms. Sensky-Kirsch said.

“We thought he was dead,” she said. “We can’t believe he’s alive.”

I can’t imagine being in that situation AND being in a wheelchair. What a horrible and helpless feeling.
