I sympathize with the boy's family, and believe that there should be justice in this case, however the process is lengthy and at 18 isn't likely to self-isolate. So, why is the boy's family monitoring her social media? That's just self-inflicted torture.

The will for justice is primal and a direct bond between the aggrieved and the victimizer, it seems to me, so who am I to judge that if being judgmental, there are courts.

Just another way to ignore the court order.

I first thought this young woman was clinically narcissistic, but the attitude of the family has led me to believe that she is simply spoiled, selfish and totally lacks empathy for anyone outside herself.

Hi, newbie here.

It seems to me that this girl wanted Conrad to kill himself so she could bask in all the attention and pity. She apparently cared not one iota for the life of her "friend" or the feelings of his family. And now she is carrying on with her life like nothing happened. This looks to me like it could be a case of Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy, a form of personality disorder where those afflicted hurt others or cause them to hurt themselves so that they can enjoy being at the centre of attention.

Whether this be true, or whether she is just your run of the mill sociopath, or just someone so heartless that she can willingly talk people into suicide for her own emotional satisfaction - her own personal pity party - she is obviously someone with enormous callousness and lack of compassion, plus few moral boundaries and is potentially dangerous.

Whether the law can nail her for this remains to be seen. Persuading someone to go through with killing himself is not exactly lifting a finger to physically help him to end his life, still less killing him herself. All the physical actions leading to his death were committed by himself. Which makes this a potentially interesting test case. However morally reprehensible her actions obviously were, do they constitute her assisting in his death in some way? The defence will argue no. The prosecution yes.

I feel that morally there needs to be negative consequences for the evil thing she did. But the legal process only makes moral judgements at the time of sentencing, once guilt has been proven. Jurors are generally discouraged from taking a moral stance and encouraged to consider the letter of the law in determining guilt in the first place.

I hope she is convicted and does serious jail time. I am less than certain that this will actually happen.

I am just getting familiar with this case. Wow, she is a sicko. Unbelievable! But like you JSinUK, I am not sure they can get a conviction here. I havent read everything, so I don't know how the statutes read that she is charged with. But i am interested to see how this plays out in court and on appeal. Very strange case.

IMO this case may get dismissed. I personally feel that it falls in line with bullying. "just get back in the truck and finish it" (paraphrased) is the same as "you should just get a rope, gun, etc, and kill yourself, you're hopeless" or something of that nature.

I think there's much more to it than one bullying text. I was leaning toward that opinion too until I read more about the timeline of her different messages. She's diabolical IMO.

One? There was whole a series of texts that day not only with him but with her friends. She was telling her friend he was likely already dead while she was texting him to finish it up. IMO she spent days, weeks enticing him to kill himself so she could bask in the drama.

I agree. I wonder what else she's done in her short life. I knew someone like her when I was a kid. She tried to drown me. When I didn't die (and stopped being friends with her), I became her target of bullying. She hated me because I was onto her but I was also secretly afraid of her because she had shown me what she was capable of. I wonder if Conrad had a similar relationship with Michelle. The texts sort of reveal that kind of dynamic to me. Of course there's plenty we don't know and it's more complicated than we probably suspect but I sure get the same creepy vibe from this story.

Another newbie here too. Like many others have mentioned this case really bothers me. While I know it's not illegal to know of someone's intent to harm themselves and not intervene (tell someone they are related to, contact the authorities, etc) I do think it's morally wrong. He wasnt her boyfriend in fact. Carter is a sick sick individual. I would expect that her mental health will be coming into play shortly given that her own words put her at McLean hospital, which is a psychiatric hospital in MA.
