Regarding the excellent points about friends and family-

It wouldnt surprise me if her social circle is much smaller since the texts were published. From what I have seen around the web, the "no way she did this" has dissolved into a simple argument about free will and Conrad having sole responsibility for the choice no matter what she said to him.

Her friends, at least the ones who gave statements and testified to the grand jury, indicate that she is unstable and needy and frequently a liar...when she said she was on the phone with him, apparently they didnt really believe her.

I cant get away from this story because of the base cruelty. Hanging at Disney, going to prom, graduating...if her parents believed that it was appropriate to share photos of these things in the middle of this case, I would say it says a whole lot about them. I would also say that the fact that she was so attention seeking might say a lot about them as well.

I believe MC is a monster and that she committed an unthinkable and evil act, and I want someone to wipe her smug look off her face.

I'll be curious to see how this plays out as well and if there are any legal ramifications. There are / have been awful websites where people can encourage others to commit suicide. Has there ever been any legal action taken there? If not, I wonder if this case could possibly set a precedent.

I can't believe what she did. We truly live in apocalyptic times. :(

The courts in Minnesota have been addressing the issue of individuals who encourage suicide:

The 52-year-old ex-nurse was sentenced to three years in prison in the deaths of an English man and a Canadian woman...He had admitted going online and encouraging 18-year-old Nadia Kajouji of Brampton, Ont., to kill herself. She was a student at Ottawa's Carleton University when she jumped into the Rideau River in 2008. The other person the former nurse Melchert-Dinkel talked to online about committing suicide, 32-year-old Mark Drybrough of Coventry, England, hanged himself in 2005.

The defense argument of William Melcher-Dinkel (referenced in my previous post) was the same one used by Carter-that he was protected by free speech.

Not so much. Granted, he served 178 days but he is on probation for 10 years. Was his sentence enough? Maybe not, but it sets a precedent for the death of Conrad Roy.

I like the way the indictment on pages 37-39 dispenses with the free speech argument, including the Melcher-Dinkel case. Bottom line, there is a huge difference between counseling someone about suicide options in a state where it is legal, and actively encouraging (badgering) someone to seek out and use the option as Carter did. What Carter did is NOT free speech and to claim that it is flies in the face of the intent of the first amendment IMO.

The whole thing is horrifying and reading the texts are like looking into the mind of evil.

There are worse texts but for some reason this one exchange really bugs me:

Conrad (opening a new convo I assume) - how was your day?
Carter - are you gonna do it?

She didn't care to ask how his day was and she didn't care that he cared how her day was, she only wanted to know when he was gonna " do it." That's bullying.

Actually she did ask how his day was. It's one of the messages that bothered me most... he replied that he'd had a good day and she immediately asked him when he was going to "do it". I despise this girl.

Nicely done and thank you for that link. It's hard to read.

From your link;

"The First Amendment does not protect conduct that threatens another...Where a defendant is charged with threatening a victim, she is not charged with "merely offensive speech", but for conduct that placed the victim in reasonable apprehension of imminent serious physical harm"

"Carter is not charged with merely discussing the merits of suicide, but for engaging in a course of wanton or reckless conduct that caused Conrad to commit suicide.
Her instruction to get back in the truck, which occurred while she knew that he was in a depressed and suicidal state and under the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning, was by no means an "essential part of any exposition of ideas", and was clearly outweighed by the dangers that it posed."

Apologies if I did not transcribe that correctly.

Just incredible.

You may be right, Dex. And a less attractive girl probably would face a rough trial. I hope her relatively good looks don't work in her favor. JMO

Thanks so much. I agree. I think at that point he was just immobilized. She wanted to play the strong, noble, grieving girlfriend, so she needed him to go through with it.

What I don't understand are her texts to Samantha revealing that she could have stopped him. Was she pretending to be guilt-ridden so she could get reassurance that she had done all she could to help him? It sort of backfired! I'd like to know what Samantha responded. Did she call LE?
That was my impression--she wanted reassurance as well as that being, IMO, a very lame attempt at covering her 🤬🤬🤬.

Also I agree if she were of an appearance considered less attractive than she is she would be treated differently. It reminds me of my friend who told me, "I know this is wrong of me to think, because I don't know anything about the situation, but Amanda Knox looks like an angel and is way too pretty to have done something like that." This is a very well-educated friend who works with child protection and has seen first-hand that pretty faces don't mean pretty souls, and she recognized her bias, but it was still there.

Note: I'm not trying to start a discussion about Amanda Knox. Please. I've had enough of her to last twenty lifetimes.

I agree that people may be more reluctant to believe the story based on her appearance-I am quite certain her appearance has caused her to receive a lot of attention and recognition in the past. Her appearance has been rapidly changing since she was indicted, although it seems clear to me that she and her defense team are still working it.

As usual, South Coast Today has the most complete coverage of today's hearing: (imo)

Assistant District Attorney Maryclare Flynn told the judge Thursday that the DA's office learned on Aug. 31 that an account similar to one Carter operated had been opened. The new account has the handle "@michyc47_"; a former account used by Carter used the handle "@michyc47."

I think they should have been able to ask her under oath if she put it up. At least the judge granted the subpoena for Twitter to turn over the IP address. I am of two minds as to whether or not it is her, but I am willing to bet her IP has bounced off of a few discussion sites ;).
