BROCKTON — It was a volatile mix of an extramarital affair and existing mental health issues that led Christine Ricci to fatally stab her husband in the heart in their Marshfield home in January, a Plymouth County prosecutor said in court.

Christine Ricci, 46, cried as she pleaded not guilty in court Tuesday to charges of murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in the killing of her husband Michael Ricci, 51. Christine Ricci was arraigned virtually from a jail in Boston on the charges in Plymouth County Superior Court in Brockton.

Plymouth County Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham said Marshfield police responded to the Ricci home in Marshfield shortly before 5 p.m. on January 28 after their 16-year-old child called 911. Firefighters treating Michael Ricci found that he had been stabbed in the heart and on the back of his left shoulder, Buckingham said, adding that he had also been slashed on his back.

-- MR’s extramarital affair and mental health issues led CR to fatally stab her husband in January.

-- CR, 46, was held w/o bail after pleading not guilty at her Plymouth Superior Court arraignment to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

-- On Jan. 28, LE went to the Ricci home after their 16 yr old child called 911.

-- MR had been stabbed in the heart and on the back of his left shoulder. CR told investigators her husband came in after shoveling snow, an argument ensued and he pushed her. She grabbed a knife to scare him away. He lunged at her and the knife plunged into his chest.

-- MR was a Boston firefighter and Army veteran.

#ChristineRicci's defense attorney began opening statements by telling jurors that Christine never intended to kill her husband, #MichaelRicci, and that the Commonwealth doesn’t have any evidence to prove she murdered him.

Christine claims she acted in self-defense when Michael allegedly attacked her.

Sophiya #Ricci, Christine and Michael Ricci’s daughter, was the state’s first witness to testify. While she was on the stand, she testified that she called 911 after her mom had called for her yelling for help after allegedly stabbing her dad. While the extremely emotional and frantic 911 call was played in court, Sophiya cried on the witness stand. The court then took a break.

Yesterday's X post:

Angel Ricci choked up while testifying in the murder trial against his mother, #ChristineRicci. Angel had been explaining his family’s dynamic before his father died when he got visibly upset.

PLYMOUTH − Opening statements were made Thursday in the murder trial of Christine Ricci, the Marshfield woman accused of stabbing her husband, Michael Ricci, to death at their home in early 2021.

After the jury was given instructions by Plymouth Superior Court Judge Diane Freniere, Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham addressed the jury of nine men and seven women, four of whom will be designated as alternate jurors. She told them that Christine Ricci had been unable to get over an affair her husband had in 2018.

She said Christine Ricci continued to needle her husband over his actions even after the couple decided to work on themselves and the marriage, going so far as to reconfirm their vows in a 2019 ceremony.

"It was like a pot of water on a stove," Buckingham said. "She turned up the heat by bringing up the affair over and over."

She told jurors they would hear from relatives, friends and Michael Ricci's co-workers from the Boston Fire Department, all of whom would testify to hearing about fights and seeing him with black eyes, a fat lip, scratches and even a broken nose in the years since the affair.

I've only seen bits of this trial so far, but from what I've seen:

- The couple's adult children, while not quite hostile to the CW, seemed to be trying to give evidence favorable to their mom. It's like they've lost one parent, they don't want to lose another.

- The Ricci's should have split up shortly after the affair was discovered. The differences this caused in the marriage were irreconcilable and the household was a ticking time bomb for tragedy while the status quo remained in place.
