I think the investigation is at a virtual standstill, but jmo
When this first happened, I remember thinking in a day or two we are going to know who this guy is. It has to be someone that was on foot, and lives close, and I am sure LE is going to question the neighbors and nail him.
Then I was watching an interview from a professor, and I want to say he teaches criminology at a boston college. I have tried to find the link, but I can't seem to find it. The guy was an older man with a white/gray mustache and same colored hair. They were walking down the sidewalk, (Journalist and him) talking, and the interviewer asked him if he thought this guy would be caught. his response was. Oh yes, when he kills again, he is bound to make mistakes. I thought, this guy right off the bat thinks he is not going to be caught, and he also thinks he is a serial killer. This was before the second press conference with L:E. if i remember right. I remember thinking, how can this guy be so sure with so little to go on? Just the way he said it, was like he had no question.
I'm no way giving up hope, but I am starting to think this guy may have been right.

Maybe you are thinking of Jack Levin of Northeastern? I know he was interviewed early on.

From the article linked above, interesting observation on increase in random crimes:

[FONT=&quot]"While people would think that murders are much easier to solve given new technology, DNA and better investigative techniques, Mr. Levin said the opposite is true. A more mobile society and more "strange homicides" mean that, unlike 25 years ago, it can't be assumed that a victim most likely knew their killer. More and more random crimes are seen now, he said."

His final thought there is just the same as what I said a few pages back- are we just in a new reality with random crimes like this?!

He seems to be someone who knows a thing or two about this stuff. I've never been convinced that this killer wasn't just passing through or hunting in Princeton.

I knew someone had mentioned the "new reality with random crime" previously, but I couldn't remember who it was, so thanks, FM.

Jack Levin certainly has a strong reputation in his field, and I have been aware of him for at least 20 years because he seems to be a go-to person on serial and mass killings. But he also admits that he "can't reconcile" if the killer was someone who knew Vanessa or a stranger to her.

Thank you for that.
I went back and tried to find it again,. I did pull up the interviews with Levin and Fox news, and although he has a mustache, the content was different, plus his interview is inside of a room, and the one I was watching, they were walking down the sidewalk.
Levins' interview was good too,but I remember this guy had no question about the profile, if I remember right.

FM. In the running history, can you see how many times she ran Mathews Lane?
Edit:
Just to add, I don't need exact numbers, but, more if that was normal when she did the block around Ball Hill rd.
Thanks.

Does anyone have any particular questions I could address if I visited the area?

Ditto what Rocky requested and thank you. ForensicMass, maybe you could try parking where we suspect the UnSub may have parked on that small asphalt space. Straight in or parallel? Take a look from that vantage point to assess the position that the killer would likely be in before leaping out to snatch VM. How natural is it to park a vehicle in that spot? Do you feel that you're being watched while at the CS?

Also, obtaining an average # of moving vehicles along that stretch of BSR could be most helpful. As always, number one rule is to please stay safe. Stay within your comfort level, ForensicMass. For instance, do not exit the vehicle alone.

From www.VanessaMarcotte.org: "Marcotte, 27, was killed Aug. 7 in the woods near her mother’s home in Princeton, where she was visiting from New York. Authorities say she was killed between 1 and 3 p.m. after going for a run." Given that, I think we fully can move past the possibility of there being two crime scenes. Hey, it's one more small fact to add to our limited list of "knowns."

Also, it says she was killed "after going for a run." Is it generally thought that she was headed back home when she was attacked? Sorry if this has been established...

A very nice website, too.

I can't imagine how much they are missing her.

:(

Only one of her mapped runs of the 5 went down Matthews Lane. It was one where she ran north, did a loop Boylston Avenue to Mountain Road to Allen Hill Road to BSR, and she must've been feeling good because she kept going and ran south past her driveway and did a loop with Matthews Lane and BSR and then returned home. Total trip was about 8 miles I believe.

All good ideas. Will consider these as well and see what I can reason and share

Very scary thought. But with today's tech, I would bet that there are trackers in those vehicles showing where they are at all times. Also, I don't see a cop for this crime. I know a lot of people think the perp is a genius and did an amazing cover up, but I don't. I think he botched several things in ways that a cop would not mess up.

Oh, I have not read about an amazing cover up of the crime. Isn't it the consensus of the thread that UnSub got "lucky" by being at the right place at the right time?

Therefore, it remains a targeted killing or targeted sex crime that ended horrifically. This creep is a dangerous sexual sadist, jmho. He probably stalked VM for a long time. The point is that VM, herself, in particular, was the specific target of the perp's fantasies.

Perp's IQ depends. Many loners are psychopaths b/c they cannot find balance within a relationship. Think John Hinkley. Theirs is a life typically filled with turmoil, angst, and drama. Jealousy. Paranoia. Revenge. Holds a grudge. Impulsive.

Whereby, sociopaths (Think Orenthal.), by their very nature, are social individuals who usually are successful CEOs and entrepreneurs. They are typically the risk takers, money movers and shakers and can be great organizers and negotiators. Both diagnosis could be suitable for a highly intelligent personality.

Often, in cases like this where the brutality of overkill is overwhelming and brazenly conducted, for example, during midday hours, NPD is also a factor.

Woodburning, cooking...or even just an outdoorsy person. Hand held blow torches are pretty small and convenient. Atleast the one we have for our woodstove..aka the Crack lighter..flame comes out the side instead of the top..and no, I don't do crack..and Forensicmass, I have been thoroughly enjoying your thoughts..
Those are great examples. Now we have to figure out why someone would have one in their car.
I use one when I start piles of brush in the spring, however, it never leaves my home.

Le said she went for a "walk"
There was very long discussion regarding if she was running, or walking, and maybe LE misspoke, but just for the record, we are not sure which.

I agree with everything you posted here.
She was the target, he had stalked her in the past, planned it out in his head , but did not think it through enough to bring a shovel, or dig a hole in advance, Sexual Sadist who spend more than just 15 minutes with her, and enjoyed causing her pain.
I am going with psychopath, but that's JMO.
The million dollar question , is, where did he stalk her from? I asked FM if she ran Mathews Lane, because you can see the road from the few houses that are on that road. It would also make for easy access to the rear of VMs moms house through the woods, if someone wanted to lurk from there. There is a cam mounted on the house at 44 Mathews Lane, but looks more pointed down that pointing towards the road.

I just searched for her FAcebook profile to see if she was friends with the other party involved in a fatality the day after (subject was working in a trade where torches are often used) but I came across a weird profile with VM's name. THe profile picture was of pia muehlenbeck and it said "VM just changed HIS profile picture". Its quite odd, with a wallpaper photo of Chinese Poker. Prob too much overthinking this but its weird - Chinese Poker often involves "beginners luck" according to Wikipedia.

Weird ****. Profile of a gamer/techie. Foreign Language, perhaps Indonesian. Tempted to contact LE. Also, LE should reach out to anyone who was renting via AirBnb that weekend.

AT the very least LE needs to follow up on the owner of that profile.

I've been pondering in my mind as to why that "ping" came from the Mountain Barn.
After some discussion, I believe everyone is in agreement that the "Find My Phone" app was used, due to the reasoning if the phone was tracked using stored data from phone co. records, it would have taken a lot more time to obtain that information.
The belief was that her phone was there at the Mountain Barn, physically, because the app uses GPS, and the accuracy is close with a GPS. So many assume that the perp had her phone with him.
I dug up some info on "Find My Phone", and the accuracy, and from what I gather, if the phone is shut off, the location will be close, but vague.
After reading this, I am led to believe that the perp did not have her phone at the Mountain Barn, and that the phone was shut off, causing the "vague" location.
I was trying to figure why this guy would carry her phone with him, and take the chance of being tracked himself, and it didn't make sense to me. Now there is an explanation.
