The Austrian had an Austrian passport stolen in Thailand and used to book this flight in his name. I think I'm looking at the same link you are and it does name him...Christian Kozel, per the manifest. But Kozel wasn't on the plane.

They could have checked in and not boarded. I am curious as to whether manifest is generated immediately before boarding at the gate or at time baggage is checked. Every time I have flown, ticket is scanned immediately before boarding at gate. Wonder how they do it?

You can enter China by air and stay for 72 hours without a visa IF you have a connecting flight out. Otherwise you absolutely do need a visa before you enter.

I agree with this.. I was referring to the stolen passports but you are right.. again.. if the ticket destination was not for China they would not need a visa. Good thinking Adnoid. (wonder when their ticket destinations will be released.. could be the reason for the speculation about terrorism not being ruled out)

Regarding cell calls, only if passengers suspected something while over land. Inflight wifi for international flights is in its infancy. It's unlikely to reach a land cell tower with a handheld cell phone when over water.

Also. If something was unfolding while over land, such as a hijacking, there are a number of covert methods pilots can use to relay distress signals, as well as reroute a plane. The absolute lack of data transmitted past the last known spot is very troubling. A lot of things would have to happen simultaneously for that to happen. Also puzzling is a lack of floating debris field if the plane broke up before ditching.

I don't know how it works in other countries, in particular other Asian countries but don't passengers need a visa to visit China? Don't airlines check passports not just for identity but that the person has the proper visa to gain entry to the country they are flying to?

Generally, the visas are checked by the incoming country (not the outgoing). I personally know a guy who arrived (from the US) at the Beijing airport without a proper visa. He was refused entry and had to return to the USA. It was completely his fault, as he just didn't bother to get a visa like he knew was required. There was no talking himself out of this one, though. Oops.

Suspicious. Like Steely said someone (2) needed a different identity to fly. Wonder if their passports have electronic chip like ours do. Would think if I reported mine stolen and someone tried to use it, there would be an alert when it was scanned at check in.

Yes, sorry. I was looking at another link above your post, which didn't mention an Austrian National. The Austrian Foreign Ministry has confirmed it was an Austrian National's passport too, and that he's safe and well. (google translated)

imo in almost every national airline of the developed world and Malaysia is that, no passenger, no baggage. If they don't board the bags are taken off the plane. Precisely to stop easy terrorism

Fox saying oil slicks visible but no wreckage seen. When I was a child a plane went down in Lake Pontchartrain and was never found. I remember hearing it was way under the floor of the lake. Realize this was in the late 50's and equipment was very limited.

If the plane had made an emergency landing, passengers and/or crew would have attempted to contact family/friends. The lack of communication strongly suggests that the aircraft met with catastrophe.
