"I am very skeptical, along with everyone else," said Peter Goelz, former managing director of the National Transportation Safety Board. "The Chinese have not been good team players in this. Many have thought that they have been manipulating the situation."

“It cannot be confirmed that the pulse signal detected by the Haixun 01 is related to a black box from MH370,” the news service quoted the center as saying. False alerts can be triggered by sea life, including whales, or by noise from ships.
The Chinese vessel, Haixun 01, was searching about 1,020 miles northwest of Perth, Australia, on Saturday when it picked up the pulse signal, Xinhua reported.
On Saturday, 10 military planes, 3 civilian jets and 11 ships were scheduled to search an area about 1,050 miles northwest of Perth, and the signal reported by the Chinese ship appeared to come from that area, according to coordinates provided by Xinhua.

according to the pinger manufacture there should be 2 pinger signals..IMO, if the Chinese heard only 1 then the other recorder battery has run out or something has happened to it
also, he says the pinger has a distinct sound so not to confuse it with other noises usually heard in the ocean

A China Central Television correspondent aboard the Haixun-01 (pronounced high shuen) reported that the 37.5 kHz signal was detected on Saturday every second for 1.5 minutes.
The signal is the standard beacon frequency for the planes cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder, said Anish Patel, president of pinger manufacturer Dukane Seacom.
Theyre identical.
The frequency was chosen for use in the recorders to give that standout quality that does not get interfered with by the background noise that readily occurs in the ocean.
But he said he would like to see more evidence. Id like to see some additional assets on site quickly maybe some sonobuoys, he said, referring to 5-inch-long (13-centimeter) sonar systems that are dropped from aircraft or ships.
And he said he was puzzled that only one signal had been detected, since each of the recorders was equipped with a pinger, which is also called a beacon.

Malaysia's civil aviation chief, Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, confirmed that the frequency emitted by Flight 370's black boxes were 37.5 kilohertz and said authorities were verifying the report."

BBM.
So it's highly unlikely that the "pings" are coming from other ships or whales, dolphins, etc?
I have heard the Pinger sound on CNN...still trying to locate that video and it does not sound like, what I have heard, whale noise to be
But I could be wrong because I have read that whale noise and interference from shipping noise can create False Alerts...sigh

Yes, but, they ARE officially part of the multinational search team.
On Saturday, Australian officials coordinating operations from Perth said 10 military planes, three civil jets and 11 ships were participating in the search over an area of about 84,000 square miles.
It was not immediately clear whether Chinas patrol ship Haixun 01 was counted among those 11 ships, and Australian search coordinators have made no mention that any Chinese vessel participating in the search was equipped with a black-box pinger detector. Photos carried by Chinese press showed Chinese searchers in a small vessel lowered from the Haixun using a hand-held commercial pinger detector.
The command center spokesman would not discuss why Australian officials had made no mention that a Chinese ship also carried a pinger detector.

I saw that too but didn't listen to it and can't find it now. CNN and other mms said the sounds heard can only be human-made (not wildlife, etc) BUT that doesn't mean it's not a random submarine or another searching vessel.

There's a video here from Anderson Cooper's show on CNN, you'll hear the pinging at about 1:05.
