FWIW, I think Robins statement is the truth. She knew MJD at least well enough that they had a few personal conversations, and was certain in her statements. There were no "I think's" or "maybe's". She knew her well enough to try to talk her out of prostituting and know she was denied the job at the strip club because she was only 15. Well enough to know she went by "Corey or Carla" (and maybe she used both). She was certain that MJD's pimp was "the guy Phoenix put in jail for bringing the 13 year old girl from back east". That makes sense too, since MJD was new and young, she was easy prey for Alonzo with her pimp being locked up. I don't think a more experienced prostitute would have gotten in a car with another pimp.
Since she doesn't seem to have been in the area long enough to look more than "familiar" to the regulars, and wasn't known by vice..I'd say she wasn't there long. And KL, by his own admission, had only been there a little while. My own opinion is that he brought her there.
So here's my line of thinking: KL is from Wisconsin. Court minutes said he was granted incarceration in Wisconsin to "be near family" which tells me he wasn't a drifter. Wisconsin was "home". He may have only been in Phoenix a little while this time, but he was probably making several trips a year from Wisconsin to Phoenix. He also seems to have been part of an organized ring, since there were quite a few codefendents with charges ranging from running a house of prostitution to money laundering....organized trafficking of these children, with his job being to recruit them, bring them to Phoenix, and get them out working. If I google a map running from Milwaukee to Phoenix, it's likely he went through the following cities:
Milwaukee, WI
Des Moines, IA
Kansas City, MO
Wichita, KS
Guymore, OK
(or he could have shot down another highway into OK city)
Albuquerque, NM
Then into Phoenix.
Perhaps we should be concentrating on missing girls from towns surrounding these areas. I don't think he would have been snatching little girls playing in the front yard of their homes, because that type of abduction spawns a manhunt. We should be looking for maybe a runaway, or wild child who went out partying and wasn't seen again. When I used to go check on my sister, the thing that always struck me was that these guys didn't look like pimps. They were tastefully dressed, smelled good, they were clean and clean cut. They looked like someone who was on their way to a sales job. They didn't "come on" like pimps either. They would always come on with this "I can make it all better" routine. One I remember vividly approached me with "you looked cold so I got you a cup of coffee." The first time I went to find her, I heard she was hanging out in front of a certain night club. I went to that night club and stood around waiting to spot her, and all these nicely dressed friendly guys kept approaching me.. me, being ignorant at the time, and thinking pimps look like they do on tv, didn't even realize. There was a cabbie sitting in front of the night club who waived me over. I went over to talk to him and he said "baby, you stand over here by me. you don't belong here." I said "is it that obvious?" He laughed and said "thems pimps on you. If you take a ride from one of them boys, the next time I see you, you'll be working the streets." My point with all this babbling is that she could've just thought "he looks nice" and accepted a ride. Because they DO look like nice guys, and based on my experience, they can sniff out the girls that are naive and alone. Maybe a runaway who came up missing sometime in 1998.
