So, what do you think the "manslaughter by vehicle" are about??? The van didn't suddenly come to life and kill Freddie!

That may be the same charge which in some states is vehicular homicide. Meaning you used a vehicle as the weapon, intentionally or not.

Is it a crime to run from LE - regardless of whether or not one is a so-called "long-time criminal"?

I don't think so.

In order for a lawful arrest to be made, there must be probable cause for the arrest, according to my understanding of the law. If someone is merely running from LE, and if someone has not committed a crime that justifies the arrest, then one should not be arrested, IMO.

Even is someone is an alleged "long-time criminal", the Fourth Amendment prohibits LE from searching anyone without probable cause.

At the time of FG's arrest, I don't believe LE had any justifiable probable cause to detain him, to search him, nor to arrest him.

That's your opinion. There are rumors out there that LE happened upon a drug deal. With his history is that really far-fetched?

Seems those that believe LE in this country have a predilection toward corruption and are actively hunting down black men for no reason will always believe the version that puts LE in the worst light. JMO

At the moment, I don't believe the contents of this letter from a Sgt to his Command, advising that numerous members of the public are challenging LE to fight with them on the streets of Baltimore.

LE has been ordered to drive 2 to a car - so some of them should start getting some of these incidents on video (body cam not needed if unavailable - they all have iphones according to previous footage).

The Sgt that wrote the letter claims 5 incidents in one day - he should have been fed up enough to capture some or all of the last 2 on video.

It's possible that two can play the instigating game here, imo - the head of the LE Union in Baltimore is stating these officers are not guilty - riling the members rather than letting justice take its course. How many times do officers hear a person arrested is not guilty and laughs about it. Isn't one suppose to tell that to the judge and jury ?

Docket sheets for five of officers identified three as white. Two as black. Bail from $250,000-$350,000. In court may 27. @ABC7News
RSBM

Thanks for your efforts on WS, popsicle !

From the pics in the DailyMail, I saw that three were white and two were black. This wasn't about nationality, imo. And yet the unrest seems to be seething with those accusations alone.
This case is about an individual's actions and the choices he may or may not have made. And also about how LE may have handled the arrest. Nothing more.
My opinion is that many arrests are based on what a person does or does not do, not what his/her ethnicity happens to be.
The only change I'd make in the police force in the city where this happened is to hire most -- if not all -- African Am. officers. Then you take away the issues that come up repeatedly.
:moo:
Just my opinion.

I haven't read or heard anything from the ME's report conclusively stating that FG purposely struck his head on the back of the door in the police van (or that FG purposely struck his head against any other surface inside the police van).

IMO, this is a misrepresentation of an earlier media report (regarding the ME allegedly stating that the injury to FG's head matched a bolt in the police van).

If FG sustained a head injury that matches a bolt inside the police van, it doesn't necessarily mean it was a self-inflicted wound.

Agreed it doesn't mean that this was a self inflicted wound but it is very plausible. The only other option (the driver inflicted the injury) is less plausible when you stop to consider the erratic manner the van would have been driven in order to inflict such injuries (sudden stops and starts). If the driver was driving in such an erratic manner I am sure it would have been noticed by witnesses.

I work and live in Baltimore. Every day this week, my work closed early for safety concerns as did many other businesses. I am one of the lucky ones who still gets compensated for my time but many others have to use timeoff or go without pay. The ones who people are protesting against are still getting paid, probably with a lot of overtime added in. This is really hurting small businesses who didn't play any role in Mr. Gray's death. Idk..I am just sad, sad for Mr. Gray's family, for all LE, for the businesses and for Baltimore. It will never be the same and I am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

It is stated in the charging documents that Freddie Gray sold a switch blade knife. Maybe this is old news. First time I have heard or read anything about it.

See PDF - Under description of charge:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/ma...ents-for-freddie-gray-20150420-htmlstory.html

According to the charging document, FG was arrested for possessing a spring-assisted, one-hand operated knife - not for selling one. I've read the charging document numerous times, and I can't find ANYTHING related to FG being arrested for selling a similarly-described knife.

Furthermore, the State's Attorney has said that the knife was not an illegal blade. Make of it what you will, but if the State's Attorney has reported factual info, it appears that FG was arrested unlawfully.

Will the police department or union post the bail for these officers since it happened while they were on duty?
I do know that in my county the school district has posted the bail and paid for their lawyers.

Imagine our country without LE...is this foreshadowing of what's to come?

It appears to be what some elements in our society think we need...naive in the extreme...

This just seems so very very wrong.

If a police officer wants to talk to you and you decide to RUN and make them chase you then that deserves charges, seems to me they had every right to take him into custody. The fact he was a convicted criminal many times over just adds to the justification.

BBM

Is there a Maryland statute that can be linked that supports the claim that "If a police officer wants to talk to you and you decide to RUN and make them chase you then that deserves charges"?

I would be surprised if there is.

I doubt there is. Just seems like common sense to me.
