The family of a teen who died in the mass shooting at Oxford High School last fall has filed a lawsuit against the school district as well as staff and administrators, alleging they were negligent and could have averted the tragedy.

"The unfathomable violence that occurred on November 30, 2021, took the lives of four students, including Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and injured seven other individuals, including a teacher," read the suit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

"The school shooting was both predictable and preventable."

Oxford Community Schools representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday night...

Detroit – One of the Oxford High School students who survived being shot on November 30 has filed a federal lawsuit against the school district and four top officials for failing to intervene to prevent the tragedy.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of 17-year-old Kylie Ossege, a recent Oxford High graduate, who suffered a gunshot wound to the right shoulder during the mass shooting at the high school in November. Four students were killed and seven others, including a teacher, were injured...

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has offered Oxford Community Schools the use of a dog trained to detect explosives and firearms along with a handler at the high school next school year.

Nessel, in a letter to the Oxford school board on Monday, also asked the district to reconsider its rejections of her offer to review the events leading up to the Nov. 30 mass shooting at Oxford High School.

Four students were killed and seven others including a teacher were wounded in the attack.

The district has twice rejected offers from Nessel to review what led up to the shooting and announced on May 10 that any independent investigation would wait until criminal and civil litigation was completed. A week later on May 17 the board changed course and approved hiring a consulting company to investigate and review the Nov. 30 shooting...

Oxford school board officials have again rejected Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's offer to review the deadly Nov. 30 shooting at Oxford High.

The Oxford Community Schools board, which twice previously declined Nessel's proposal, also rejected her offer of a dog trained to detect explosives and firearms along with a handler at the campus in the next academic year. The district's letter was in response to one Nessel sent Monday in which she asked the district to reconsider its rejections of her offer to review the events leading up to the Nov. 30 mass shooting at Oxford High, which left four students dead and seven others, including a teacher, wounded.

In a letter to Nessel Tuesday, school board President Thomas Donnelly said the district is "proceeding with the independent investigation announced in May. We intend to share information with our school families and the community outlining the next steps in that investigation. We are confident that, at the conclusion, we will have a clearer picture of what led up to the events on that tragic day as well as a set of responsible and effective solutions to consider so, together, we can move forward."...

Oxford – A group of Oxford Community Schools parents known as #change4oxford announced Friday a federal lawsuit on behalf of 20 students that aims to force the Oxford Community School District to make changes in the aftermath of the Nov. 30 shooting at Oxford High School.

Four students were killed and seven others were wounded, including a teacher.

Unlike other lawsuits already filed by parents against the school district seeking significant financial damages, the lawsuit to be filed Friday by 20 Oxford students does not seek monetary damages but wants to “correct the district’s violations of the students’ rights to a safe and effective learning environment,” according to a news release. Toward that goal, school administrators are being asked to maintain school safety and protect students from deadly violence...

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – About 20 students at a Michigan high school where four students were killed in a mass shooting say their constitutional rights to safety and education have been violated and that they want changes to ensure security at school, a law firm representing them said Friday.

The federal lawsuit being filed Friday names the Oxford Community School District, its former superintendent and other officials. It seeks an independent review and policy changes, including increased transparency and communication from the district.

The Associated Press sent an email seeking comment from the district...

The families of about 20 Oxford High School students filed a federal lawsuit in a push for policy changes after three teenagers were killed and eight other people were injured in a shooting at the Michigan school.

The suit, filed in the Southern Division of the Eastern District of Michigan, does not seek monetary compensation. Attorney Scott Weidenfeller, who represents the families, said they are asking the district for transparency and communication.

"The new school year is about 10 weeks away, and so these families have children that are going back to the school. And so, this lawsuit really seeks to force change by federal court order," he said at a virtual news conference Friday...

^ I hope the lawsuit doesn't have glaring errors like the above NBC report that quotes the attorney who represents these Oxford families. There were, in fact, four students killed in the November 30 shooting. NBC report omits Justin Schilling who was 17. The attorney should familiarize himself with the facts before doing interviews. Oxford district pursues shooting recovery plan with aid of UM center

Oxford Community Schools is tapping the expertise of a national program run through the University of Michigan to create a long-term school security and emotional wellness plan after the Nov. 30 school shooting at its namesake high school.

The National Center for School Safety, based out of UM's School of Public Health, is among a roster of experts Oxford is engaging as it focuses on helping Oxford High School students and staff deal with the fallout when an accused teen gunman killed four and injured seven last fall in their school.

The recovery plan is scheduled to be unveiled to the school board in August...

Pontiac — Defense attorneys for the parents of the accused Oxford High shooting suspect filed emergency motions Tuesday seeking sanctions against Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald for alleged “unethical and inappropriate” statements and pretrial publicity.

Attorneys Shannon Smith and Mariell Lehman represent Jennifer and James Crumbley, respectively, both charged with involuntary manslaughter in the Nov. 30 deaths of four students investigators say were fatally wounded by their teenage son, Ethan Crumbley. All three Crumbleys are in the Oakland County Jail pending their trials.

In Tuesday’s court filing, Smith and Lehman objected to McDonald accusing them of “lying” and providing false statements to the public and news media and “doubling down on misinformation” they say will deprive the Crumbley parents to their constitutional right of a fair trial...

The Crumbley parents have requested a new court filing as their lawyers say Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald has crossed the line.

According to the couple’s lawyer, McDonald’s is bad-mouthing their clients to the media and tainting the potential jury pool. On Tuesday, the lawyers representing James and Jennifer Crumbley filed an “emergency supplemental” motion asking the 6th circuit court to restrict pretrial publicity.

In May, the Crumbleys argued that the media coverage about them shows that they are “already convicted.” The couple’s defense team defends this motion while also stating “despite the fact that (Ethan Crumbley) solely and deliberately planned and committed premeditated murder.”...

Pontiac — Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald challenged allegations of inappropriate pretrial publicity in the manslaughter case of the parents of the accused Oxford High shooting suspect and said she would not object to a media gag order for both sides.

McDonald’s office was reacting to an emergency motion filed this week by defense attorneys for James and Jennifer Crumbley, parents of accused shooter Ethan Crumbley, who accused her of inappropriate and unethical pretrial comments. McDonald's office replied Wednesday the same attorneys raised the same issue to Judge Cheryl Matthews in May 18 filings, to which McDonald responded last week...

Judge orders Oxford shooting video released; prosecutor seeks to intervene

Pontiac — The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office said Wednesday it will seek to intervene in a civil lawsuit after a judge ordered the release of all evidence contained in the Oakland County Sheriff Office’s file relating to the Nov. 30 Oxford High School shooting, including surveillance footage.

Seeking the evidence as part of a civil lawsuit are the families of two slain students, Tate Myer and Justin Shilling, and three other students who survived the shooting incident but remain traumatized, according to court documents.

Attorney Ven Johnson, who is representing families in federal and state lawsuits, filed legal motions with Oakland County Circuit Judge Rae Lee Chabot to compel the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and Oxford Community Schools to turn over copies of all police reports and surveillance camera videos.

“This is nothing unusual,” Johnson said Wednesday. “I have obtained this type of material in other cases, but for some reason, the sheriff’s office has blocked my efforts. Well, now the judge said they must turn over the material.”...

The suspected Oxford High School shooter appeared in court Thursday morning for a monthly hearing to confirm his placement at the Oakland County Jail while he awaits trial -- of which the date has been pushed back several months.

Each month, accused shooter Ethan Crumbley must appear in court for a pretrial hearing, in which the judge will decide whether to continue lodging him at the Oakland County Jail rather than a juvenile facility. Crumbley’s attorney previously requested he be moved to Children’s Village juvenile detention center because he is a minor, but an Oakland County judge denied that request in March and ordered the accused shooter to remain in jail...

New trial date set for accused Oxford High School shooter

Pontiac — Accused Oxford High shooting suspect Ethan Crumbley was back in court Thursday for a virtual placement hearing as required by law and learned he will not go to trial until January at the earliest.

Crumbley, 16, of Oxford is charged with killing four fellow students at the school and wounding six others and a teacher. He is facing possible life in prison if convicted.

Oakland County Circuit Judge Kwame Rowe continued Crumbley's placement in the county jail after both defense attorneys and Oakland County assistant prosecutors told him there was nothing new to report regarding Crumbley. Defense attorneys have argued in the past that it would be more appropriate for Crumbley to be transferred to the county Children’s Village juvenile detention facility rather than in the county jail...

Pontiac — James and Jennifer Crumbley are set to be back in court Monday as they seek a gag order against Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald for alleged inappropriate pretrial publicity in their manslaughter cases tied to four deaths in the Oxford High School shooting.

McDonald has indicated she would have no objection to a gag order on defense and prosecution lawyers, but she wouldn't stop her advocacy for the public and public safety. She also said the Crumbleys' lawyers raised the same issues before and were attempting to circumvent court rules.

Defense attorneys Shannon Smith and Mariell Lehman have asked that McDonald be sanctioned for statements made in filings and to news media which they argue will taint the prospective jury pool and interfere with their clients' right to a fair trial...

Jennifer and James Crumbley, the parents of the suspected Oxford High School shooter, have requested their trial be moved, arguing that they won’t receive fair treatment in Oakland County.

They are scheduled to appear in court for the motion to be heard on Monday morning at 10 a.m. -- watch the hearing live in the video player above.

James and Jennifer Crumbley are both facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter for their alleged role in failing to prevent the shooting. Their son, Ethan, is the suspected shooter...
