Attorneys and law experts familiar with the case of the Crumbley parents largely agree with Oakland County Circuit Judge Cheryl Matthews, who last month rejected defense arguments that the trial be moved out of the county. They say keeping the proceedings in Oakland County presents certain but not insurmountable challenges — despite the nature of the Nov. 30 rampage in which four students were slain, and six others and a teacher were wounded...

Six school employees with knowledge of Nov. 30 shootings must be deposed within 60 days.

Pontiac – An Oakland Circuit judge ordered the attorney for the Oxford School District Wednesday to comply with a request for depositions in a civil lawsuit stemming from the Nov. 30 high school shooting in which four students died and seven others were wounded.

Judge Rae Lee Chabot had previously ordered attorneys into mediation on the issues but after they reported being unable to resolve matters, she told attorneys they have 60 days to comply with depositions from six school employees: Pam Parker Fine, Shawn Hopkins, Nicholas Ejak, Jacquelyn Kubina, Becky Morgan and Allison Karpinski.

Failure to comply would put the school district’s attorney at risk of being in contempt of her initial court order of June 23 that attorneys for families of victims were entitled to ask them questions outside of court...

During the monthly review hearing in June, the judge pushed Crumbley’s trial date back to January 17, 2023. It was originally, but tentatively, scheduled for Sept. 6.

Oxford school district gets $700,000 from feds in response to shooting

The money will go toward improving school safety in the district as well as aiding the well-being of students, staff and families at the high school.

The U.S. Department of Education awarded more than $700,000 in emergency funds Friday to the Oxford Area Community School District in response to the mass shooting in November at Oxford High School.

The $707,600 was disbursed as part of the federal department's School Emergency Response to Violence project. Funding for the project is authorized through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, with more than $3.7 million being awarded this year.

Lawyer for victims' families plans to add Oxford schools in civil suit

Attorney Ven Johnson, representing families of four students slain and others wounded in Oxford High shooting, said district shouldn't be able to 'hide behind governmental immunity'.

Timothy Mullins, the attorney representing six Oxford school defendants named in the complaint, said Wednesday he filed legal briefs months ago that government immunity protection was appropriate, but is prepared to argue the matter further if necessary.

“There have been about 25 people or more that have tried to stop governmental immunity and failed,” Mullins said. “I suspect that will be case here. It's up to the judge of course, but it's possible we may have oral arguments on this sometime in October.”...

Detroit — An armed Oxford High School security guard failed to stop a mass shooting that killed four students and injured seven others, thinking the attack was a drill and that one student was wearing “really good makeup" as he bled to death, a victim's lawyer argued Wednesday.

Attorney Ven Johnson leveled the allegation against the security guard after viewing school surveillance video and moved to amend a civil lawsuit to name the retired Oakland County sheriff's deputy as a defendant. Speaking during a news conference attended by victims of the Nov. 30 shooting, Johnson and parents of victims criticized school officials for a lack of transparency in the nine months since police say Oxford student Ethan Crumbley waged the attack.

Johnson stated that the security guard thought the school shooting was an active shooter drill. He claims that there is video footage showing the guard walking down the hallway and finding the body of Tate Myre.

The attorney said that the security guard told investigators that when she saw Myre, she thought they were using good makeup for the ALICE drill...

I have no words and I'm sick of reading the lack of response from the very people put in our schools to protect the children. It was also stated that she had a body cam on her but NEVER TURNED IT ON. Now, even IF she thought this was a drill shouldn't she have turned that body cam on - as part of her training?

So glad I no longer have children in our public schools.

That's pathetic to even throw out to the public, how about she was in shock or panicked. Anything other than she thought it was an ALICE DRILL. ALICE...

ALICE stands for alert, Well she, this guard,thinks they alerted who???, everybody except her? an armed guard who could/may have ended this quickly. Good make up on a dead teen???

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. The whole point of the body cam is to see what they did right and what they can improve upon.

Did the security guard immediately go into denial, wanting it to be a drill, and ignoring her training, policies, and common sense about what happens during a shooting versus a drill, because otherwise, it would be "real?"
Do they teach security and law enforcement officers about the human tendency to freeze and go into denial in emergencies, and how to push through that?
This is why not everyone is cut out for security/LE positions (myself included).

Why should we be surprised? The information about response is trickling out of the situation in a very, very, very slow way. The families of those killed, the survivors and bystanders deserve way better. The Oxford Board of Education and Oxford High School administration and staff have been in CYA mode since Day 1. They will never take responsibility for their inept handling of this situation. JMO
