LANSING, Mich. – Michigan lawmakers passed several new laws and amendments in 2023 that will take effect in 2024.

Making use of the first combined Democratic majority in the state House, Senate and governor’s seat in decades, legislators approved numerous bills from their agenda. Now, laws related to gun safety, minimum wage, LGBTQ+ protections, the “Right to Work” policy, and more will take effect in 2024...

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect (including links to the actual legislation):

Gun safety laws

Following the deadly and horrific mass shootings at Michigan State University in February 2023 -- which occurred just over a year after the deadly mass shooting at Oxford High School in 2021 -- state lawmakers quickly passed a series of bills related to firearms in an effort to address gun violence.

Lawmakers sought to reduce gun violence through a three-pronged approach, approving legislation that establishes a red flag law, requirements for gun storage, and universal background checks on firearm purchases. There were several bills related to each of the topics that all passed and were signed into law by Gov. Whitmer -- apart from one of the five bills related to red flag laws.

Here’s what’s taking effect...
Thank you!
In addition though not part of Michigan's new 2024 gun laws.

This is the federal form that James lied on when purchasing the handgun;
It was entered as evidence during JC's trial.

"A straw purchase
is any purchase in which a second person agrees to acquire a firearm for someone else. This is not the same thing as purchasing a firearm as a genuine, bonafide gift. It is legal to purchase a firearm as a gift for another, since you are actually buying the firearm for yourself to gift to another. However, it is illegal to purchase a firearm posing as the real buyer for someone else. If you do, it is called a straw purchase because the person posing as the buyer likely has a clean background and is doing so on behalf of another, often because that second person may not pass the background check.

A purchaser of a firearm from an FFL who lies on the Federal Form 4473 about the identity of the ultimate possessor of the gun can be charged with making false statements on a Federal Firearms Transaction Record. Lying on this form is a felony and can be punished by up to five years in prison in addition to fines, even if the transaction is denied by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

There are students who have already testified at EC's Miller Hearing and his sentencing.
Both those that were injured and those who were a witness.

"Due to emotional impact of witness testimony, it is a real possibility that one or more witnesses may be unable to testify," Assistant Oakland County Prosecutor Marc Keast wrote in a filing that helps explain why the prosecution may call on students to testify in the trial of James Crumbley. His son carried out the 2021 deadly mass shooting at Oxford High School, using a gun gifted to him by his parents."

James Crumbley may come off as more sympathetic than his wife. But is it enough?
I actually have some degree of sympathy for James. He seems very meek and has probably always taken a back seat to his wife. Jennifer comes across as a bully and likely ran the show in the Crumbley household. I also think that Jemes' hearing issues might engender sympathy for him during the trial. JMO

Totally agree.

Well I don't have sympathy for James just because his personality comes across differently from his wife's. Where was he during his son's lonely times?

Text messages from James:
"he woke up looking like he had WAY too much to drink last night complaining about a headache”

“He said, ‘let me ask you a question. Why am I in your guys’ room,’ LOL”

“I totally thought you were giving him Xanax last night.”

Just one more parent not taking his son's problems seriously, IMO.

Article also says Ethan claimed in a text message to a friend
"his father refused and instead gave him pills and told him to “suck it up.”

James has hearing issues?
Yes. Counsel requested headphones for James to wear in the courtroom because he has trouble hearing.

For several witnesses who were in Oxford High School the day a 15-year-old student opened fire in the hallways in 2021, testifying during the shooter's mother's trial late last month was so traumatizing they may not be able to do it again for the father, prosecutors say.

James Crumbley's attorney has filed a motion not to allow student witnesses to testify in his trial next month in Oakland County Circuit Court. But Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Marc Keast said due to the "emotional impact" of testimony from earlier witnesses, they may not be able to take the stand again so he's seeking to add several students to testify instead.

Crumbley is set to stand trial March 5 on four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with his son's mass shooting at Oxford High School, which left four students dead and six others and a teacher injured...

Looking at the picture in that link, it’s astonishing the physical difference of JC upon arrest and now. Obviously jail/stress has taken a toll on her. We can never know obviously, but I wonder if she would have shown some true emotions during trial and really expressed grief and remorse for the deceased teenagers, and not been so defensive, if she would have had a different outcome. But who knows, maybe that is the real her and she’s not remorseful

I agree he appears to be meek and bullied by his wife’s overly aggressive personality. In her defense, maybe she was tired of living with a guy who couldn’t keep a job or wake up on his own.

With that said, if he wouldn’t have bought the gun for his mentally unwell kid, he wouldn’t be on trial. I find him equally or more responsible than his wife. They both suck as parents though.

And I think this goes back to a societal view on mothers. We are often held to a higher standard than fathers.

According to her testimony...She is remorseful only about this...

Ethan shooting people.

She is not remorseful about her actions at all.....

She specifically testified that she would not do anything different. Not even any mention about locking up the gun.

Judges mention remorse often, very often, during sentencing. Now that Jennifer has been found guilty she needs to express remorse even if she believes herself to not be guilty.

The evidence pointed to alcoholic use and Xanax use. In jail she cannot have any of this. The only things she can have are over the counter medications and food and beverages.

This may account for a change in appearance including a lack of hair dye - hair care products.

Agree with all of this. Crazy when she said she wouldn’t change anything.

Her appearance isn’t just lack of hair dye. She looked slovenly thru most of trial. Especially her hair. Assume she can buy a comb in the jail. Put it back in a messy bun or something. But she looks like she rolled out of bed most days. And for the person asking about calories in sandwiches in the beginning of her arrest, she sure has gained an excessive amount of weight. Assume that’s from stress and poor quality food in jail. She should have shown some of that stress and emotion in the courtroom instead of acting unaffected.

I wonder if her slovenly appearance was calculated. Attorneys will usually give advice to their clients on how to look innocent to the jury. Generally neat and not flashy is considered best. But this attorney was so weird that I wonder if she thought having JC look poorly-groomed would play better, perhaps counteracting the self-involved attitude she had displayed as a mother. Or else JC just couldn’t be bothered to look presentable and respectful, or was too depressed to try.

I think she used snacks in place of alcohol and prescription pills which accounts for weight gain. Also lack of exercise and lack of the walking people do just in their every day life. In jail you sit around. Also the lack of outdoor recreational options that are offered in prison.

Yes her hair wasn't just gray, it was unkept. I don't understand it. Attorneys give advice about how their clients should present themselves and it seems like J's attorney didn't care. And her attorney never should have asked her if she regrets anything, would do it differently, without telling her to answer ... Yes.

And her attorney brought up the affair for no reason.

Terrible attorney... In my opinion.....Appeal

Probably too depressed to care. Sitting in jail too long....over 2 years. Most people in jail are not in jail anywhere near that long. Jails are not equipped for long term incarceration.

The Oakland County Jail maintains an average of 596 offenders in custody on any given day.

The Oakland County Jail has a monthly turnover of 40% of their inmate population.

Another 30% turnover every 90 days.

Another 20% every six months.

Approximately 10% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months.

I’m rewatching (mostly listening to) the trial right now in its entirety. Really paying attn to the attorney. She’s the worst attorney I’ve ever seen. She’s like a bratty child. Whining and complaining about everything. And acting like she is so overwhelmed, slow down, I don’t understand etc. it’s bizarre. And the judge buys into this nonsense and responds like she is patting her head, saying it’s going to be ok honey. And the judge makes stupid comments about having to be up at 4 am reading notes, things are taking too long etc. The victims’ parents are there! I find it disrespectful.

Why oh why would she allow the affair! It made NO SENSE. Even the prosecutor was like wtf.

Originally I thought this could be a calculated step by the atty. but why?? Sure, no need to be flashy but there’s a nice middle ground.
