MI - Bianca Jones, 2, Detroit, 2 Dec 2011 - #4 - *D. Lane guilty*

  • #941
Banika Jones was in court Wednesday to support the man accused of killing her child. She says she believes he is innocent.

The defense said in their closing arguments that Lane is a "punk" for allowing the alleged assailants to take Bianca, but pointed out that his actions don't make him a murderer.

All this support for DL really makes it look like Banika has thrown her missing daughter under the bus. I'm afraid even if a jury finds D'Andre guilty of murdering Bianca, her mom will still be cheerleading for D'Andre's innocence. It's horrifying to read. I don't know how she can believe D'Andre over her daughters half sibling who stated D'Andre stuffed the panties in her mouth. I don't know what kind of people find that acceptable and I don't know what kind of people would dismiss or minimize a little child telling a parent something like that. It's horrifying.

Thanks for the updates, Cubby. I checked WDIV and Detroit News websites and found nothing. This is from the WWJ Radio website:

Really difficult to understand given that Banika's mother doesn't buy Andre's story and wants to know what he did with her grandchild!

I am praying that this jury be blessed with good sense. For Bianca's sake :(

Detroit dad killed missing toddler, prosecutor tells jury

By Christine Ferretti
The Detroit News

Detroit — Bianca Jones was "unwanted and unloved" by her father D'Andre Lane who prosecutors say fatally beat the toddler in December beforetossing out her body like trash.

The father of seven is charged with felony murder on claims he fatally beat the still-missing toddler with a hard stick over a bed-wetting incident on Dec. 2, disposed of her body at an incinerator and fabricated a tale of an armed carjacking to cover up the crime.

"Bianca Jones is dead. She died at 2 years old and he killed her," Assistant Prosecutor Carin Goldfarb told a Wayne County Circuit Court jury during closing arguments Wednesday.

"He killed her and threw away her body with the garbage. There was no carjacking. Bianca did not run away. There was no child abduction. She is dead."

On cross-examination, prosecutors pointed out to Gibbs that it had been determined the child she thought may have been Bianca, actually belonged to someone else.

So it appears they did not blow off the tip. It was investigated and determined the child was not Bianca. This LEO likely felt she was blown off because as patrol, she was not included in the intricate details being handled by homicide. Two different departments and I am sure they don't share every detail of every investigation or traffic stop with every LEO in Detroit.

Also from the above link:

The defense only called two witnesses. The other was also a Detroit Police Officer. Officer Oscar Garza testified that his tracking dog picked up a human scent about fifteen feet away from Lane's vehicle and that it led them to a vacant apartment building where a black ski mask was also discovered

A black ski mask, huh? In a vacant building. I'd think the jury would dismiss that entirely as trash in a vacant building as there are many in Detroit, unless a tie between DNA on the mask and DNA in the car could be found. That apparently did not happen.

:please:Praying the jury get's it right! If they do, maybe DL will try and plea on sentencing by revealing the location of Bianca's remains.

Only two witnesses? They got nothing? Just some random child that they must have know wasn't Bianca if they read the discovery (and because Bianca is dead) and a ski mask in a vacant building that even DL could have put there?

I was sure there would be a bus load of manipulated girlfriends saying DL is the coolest guy and if he abused his children it wasn't that bad, honest, I never did anything and I would have if it was that bad, I swear.

This appears to be an updated version of yesterday's Detroit News recap of closing arguments:

Detroit dad paddled toddler to death for bed-wetting, jury told

By Christine Ferretti
The Detroit News

Detroit — Bianca Jones was "unwanted and unloved" by her father, prosecutors say, and the man fatally beat the toddler for wetting her bed before throwing away her body like trash.

Wayne County prosecutors contend D'Andre Lane paddled the child to death on Dec. 2, disposed of her corpse at an incinerator and fabricated an armed carjacking to cover up the crime.

The scenario was laid out in closing arguments Wednesday at the close of the father of seven's felony murder trial in Wayne Circuit Court.

"Bianca Jones is dead. She died at 2 years old and he killed her," Assistant Prosecutor Carin Goldfarb told jurors.

"He killed her and threw away her body with the garbage. There was no carjacking. Bianca did not run away. There was no child abduction. She is dead."

They think he disposed of her in a dumpster somewhere?

That article says
Deliberations are expected to begin Thursday.

So did they start yesterday or didn't they?

DETROIT — A guilty verdict against D’Andre Lane, 32, of Detroit for the murder his 2-year-old daughter, Bianca Jones, is not a sure thing for the prosecution.

Lane's fate could be learned as early as Thursday when the jury is expected to begin deliberating at 9:30 a.m.

http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2012/10/bianca_jones_jury_deliberates.html

Oh, my. I saw a guilty verdict against D'Andre Lane and thought I missed something!

Also from the above article:

In reality, the prosecution believes Lane took the dead child from his home and disposed of her remains in an incinerator.

An incinerator, how lovely. Un-believable. I'm not sure what to think as far as what the jury might decide. The media simply didn't give us enough for me to decide either way. Just based on what we read there was a lot more in the pre-trial than what this jury might have heard, so praying the jury gets it right.

Also, disclosure - get puke bag before reading the above link. A whole lot more of Banika's cheerleading and support for her daughters alleged murderer. It's gut wrenching to read each and every time I read it.

I apologize if this has been discussed before, but has anyone had any thoughts on whether the teenage nephew actually assisted in the disposal of Bianca's body? It seems a bit much to believe that a teenager wouldn't know the difference between a live person and a deceased person when DL brought her out of the bedroom the next morning. There was the inconsistency in his statements (at first he said he saw her yawn, and then later said she just looked at him). Or is he just covering for DL?

Is there any info that the nephew's whereabouts were verified (ie, he was actually dropped off at school), and if the daughter was dropped off first?

Hmmmm... Points I had not considered... But quite valid!

This article states"....disposed her body at an incinerator... "

First I have heard of this... Conjecture?

Could DL have not thrown Bianca in bodies of water?

does any one have clarification of this?

TIA

Here is what I found on incinerators in Detroit:

Detroit is home to one of the world’s largest incinerators. That facility burns around 800,000 tons of trash every year.
The issue has sparked passionate conflict in Detroit for more than 20 years.

http://www.environmentreport.org/show.php?showID=517

I'm going to take an uneducated guess here that much of Detroit's trash gets burned in this incinerator as opposed to going to a landfill somewhere, and that led the journalist to believe she eventually made her way to the incinerator by having been tossed in a dumpster.

I could be wrong. The only thing I remember about incinerators is seeing them in old buildings. Or remnants of where they once existed in old buildings. Are there still active incinerators in Detroit aside from the one large city incinerator mentioned in the above link? Locals can you help us out here?

  • #956
Since I don't know very much about incinerators... I have a picture in my head of a large incinerator at a building plant...

And I can't imagine people from the community just walking up to an incinerator and putting trash in it...

It seems like incinerators would be monitored for amount placed in it, types of material (no flammables ), etc.

But this is all just my opinion based on very little facts,

I wonder how long the jury will be out? There isn't really that much evidence for them to review. I guess it will depend on how the initial vote went. Hopefully they will do a better job at jury duty than the Pinellas <modsnip> in the Caylee Anthony trial.

Praying for a guilty verdict!

:please:

I hope the media is watching for a verdict. I have family in town but will be checking in when I can. Praying for justice.

That article says

Morning reports on WWJ radio indicated that deliberations would continue at 9:30. It sounds like the jury heard their instructions yesterday, went to the jury room, and perhaps decided to wait until morning to actually begin discussions of the case. :moo:

I ran all of my usual Thursday errands and will be on verdict watch for the rest of the day. WDIV will likely send an email alert when a verdict has been reached.

:please: Justice for Bianca :please:
