DETROIT - Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged three people in the murder of a 13-year-old Detroit boy who was abducted while riding a bike along a city street.

Gregory Walker, Lillian Roberts and Earnest Coleman are charged with kidnapping, torture and murder, among other charges, in connection to the death of 13-year-old Deontae Mitchell.

It is alleged that three kidnapped Mitchell at gunpoint outside Nino's Market on East Warren Avenue about 11:15 p.m. May 31. Walker is accused of beating and choking the boy to death...

Poor Deontae
I just don't understand! It's bad enough when there is one perp but we see it all the time. Why didn't one of these other men say NO? Why didn't anyone stand up for the child ? If you're too afraid to tell your friend to not kill babies, maybe you need better friends !!!!!!!!!!!!

I still can't get past what was done to this child over $70.

My son is 12.

Such a kid thing to think. "finders keepers"

And now a child is dead. Beaten and killed.

A Detroit man testified Thursday that he saw a scared 13-year-old Deontae Mitchell in his cousin’s car the night the child went missing after allegedly scooping up $70 in lost money that belonged to his relative.

Mitchell was last seen in a video being forced into a dark car on May 31 by a man outside an east side market. That individual is alleged to be Gregory Walker, one of three people charged in the kidnapping and killing of Mitchell.

John Reed testified that his cousin called him late the night of May 31 saying he had “the little boy in his car.” He said Walker told him some boys had stolen his money and shot out the window in his car. A mechanic testified that Walker and Roberts brought the car to him about a day later to have the driver’s side window replaced and a bullet hole in the car repaired...

I simply don't understand how anyone can kill another human being let alone torture them! ...let alone a 13yo!! Am I missing something?? Do these people simply have no empathy? How common is a lack of empathy?

My suspicion is that it was much more than $70. But $70 is an amount that wouldn't raise any additional suspicions. JMO.

Makes me think that there is a good bit missing from the story. Including, perhaps, a much larger amount of cash. Face it. If a kid breaks your car window and makes off with $70, and you know who it was, you'd probably call the cops. At the very least you'd need the police report to have insurance pick up some of the cost of the broken window. That's if your life is pretty much on the up and up. So, the perp's (and his cousin's) story is pretty leaky all the way around.

And maybe the story on the kid's side (that he just picked up some cash that somebody dropped) isn't completely true, either. Maybe the kid actually did go out of his way to "pick up" the cash--as in maybe it wasn't actually dropped. At this point it only matters because it might help explain why the perp ended up killing him. As in, maybe he had a few clues about how the guy happened to have the cash to begin with. And he knew that the cops were pretty certain to become involved--particularly after they had driven the kid around for awhile trying to intimidate him into giving up where the money went.

Just think that there's a whole lot more to this story than what we know so far.

Imagine, for instance, if the perp was dealing. And he had been fronted some product with the collections being owed back to some source.

Little boy picked it up (knowing who it was for) and rode off quickly with his cousin while giggling because they just got a little summer spending money. Big man doesnt like to be crossed. Big man hunts down this child. Big man forces him to search for the cousin so they could both be taught a lesson. Big man hurts this baby who only did what most little boys would do. To big man, taking $1 of what he thought was his is the same as taking $10000. He thinks he is important, in his own head, and no one should cross him.

Agreed these folks were not the call the cops type. Which is why I am suspicious of anything that they have said. Detroit News story linked above cited someone saying that they repaired a window and bullet hole in the car. So--it appears to be true that someone did shoot out the window. Maybe the boys, or maybe not. Maybe the window was shot out before the boys entered into the story and just allowed them to reach in and take $. I haven't seen any surveillance footage showing money being dropped and picked up. So--I am not ready to rule out Deonte's cousin having invented that part to cover for something.

I want to be really careful about what I am wanting to explore here, because I am not about finding ways to blame the victim. I just think that the big guy had to have had much bigger reasons than $70. One of the early charges for one of the accomplices had to do with kidnapping with an intent to collect ransom. I think they had to have been going after a good bit more than $70--and had some reason to believe that someone HAD a good bit more than $70 to offer up. Again--JMO.

Gregory Walker received two concurrent sentences of 40 to 60 years in prison and Lillian Roberts got two sentences of 24 to 40 years...

Coleman was sentenced earlier this month to at least 14 years in prison. Coleman had pleaded guilty to torture and illegal possession of a gun.
