Wanted to get an idea of how the cousin could be charged
Accessory After the Fact in Michigan -
under Michigan law the penalties for an accessory after the fact charge can be severe.

An accessory after the fact is a person who knowingly assists a perpetrator of a crime after the crime has been completed. Even if the person who committed the crime is never convicted, a person can be found guilty of accessory after the fact as long as it can be proved that the crime occurred, and the person offered assistance after the crime. An obvious example of an accessory after the fact is a person who assists a wanted felon hiding from the law. Accessory after the fact is a common law offense, so its origins derive from case law. Although the crime of “accessory after the fact” is not explicitly outlined in the Michigan Compiled Laws, MCL 750.505 does set out the relevant sentencing guidelines which can include incarceration for up to five years or a fine of up to $10,000. It is up to the court to decide whether it should be prison, fines, or both.

"But also, he's a man who showed glimpses of his dark side – a scary first date, stalking a woman in a Sam's Club parking lot, vile comments at work.

Until his arrest in May, though, nobody had put it all together.

"It's hard to understand that your close friend, someone that you hung around with and liked being around... had this double life," said a former Fruitport High School schoolmate who worked with Willis and remained friends with him.

In a special report tonight at 7 p.m., Target 8 investigator Ken Kolker sits down with long-time friends, classmates and others, taking you behind the two faces of Jeffrey Willis."

Beyond shocked that Willis was playing cards right across the parking lot from Jessica's job the night she disappeared and the police just recently found this out. How did they not learn this early on?!

The night Heeringa was abducted, police say Willis was playing in a Magic: The Gathering tournament at The Pointes Shopping Center, right behind the gas station where she worked.

But police discovered this only recently.

Amazing LE never checked his cell records to see if he was lying when originally spoken to

I guess I didn't get to read this. The friend doesn't think Willis will tell where Jessica is.

And, like everybody else, he wants to know where Heeringa is, though he expects his friend will play it out, much like a game of Magic: The Gathering.

"He won't reveal anything until he's ready to reveal it," he said. "That's like with Jessica. If he moved her body, that's his trump card. He's not going to reveal that until he's ready to reveal that."

"If it's enough, Jeff will play that card. Until then, he'll go to his grave with it. I'm sorry to say that to the families, I really am. I hope like hell he mans up. But I don't see it," he added.

Thank God it did that probably saved her life.

I don't like criticising law enforcement and it is easy to ask why things weren't done in heinsight but I would have thought they would have looked at various events going on at establishments around the gas station the night Jessica disappeared. They could have questioned the people at the trading card event and discovered what vehicle they were driving.

I wonder what he was filming when the cousin went down to the basement if what the cousin says is true that he believed Jessica was dead. It is probably better we don't know. I still don't trust what the cousin is saying completely.

I will be very surprised if he does too I hope and pray I'm wrong especially for the Heeringa family. Jessica's kidnap and murder is the crime he most likely feels is his success. Rebekah's murder and the teenager getting away will be failures in his eyes. He can use what he did to Jessica and her not being found for bragging rights. His smirking in court indicates to me he is enjorying having the upper hand over prosecutors and the court. The only hope is that a family member can get him to confess or some sort of deal can be done to improve his prison facilities. The thought of this monster benefiting from his crimes against Jessica sickens me but it might be the only hope of Jessica being found and being given a funeral. I just hope hell exists for monsters like Willis.

Is "Magic: the Gathering" a game like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh where the players collect actual cards, and then play their tournaments?

  • #875
I'd never heard of the trading card game "Magic: The Gathering."

Here's a link to Wikipedia.

When I was younger my friend and cousins would always play it so I would say about 20 years ago it was popular. Sounds like people still do but I remember back then it was huge.

Yes they collect cards (fiancé has so many) and then play tournaments.
My fiancé plays a few times a month however some people are really drawn to it and play much much more.

I believe the cousin is saying that Jessica was already dead in order to try to minimize his culpability. I believe that she was probably still alive, but that would be difficult to prove in court, so the charge against the cousin is the most sensible one.

Lawyers for a man charged with murder in the 2013 disappearance of a gas station clerk in western Michigan want a key hearing in the case to take place behind closed doors.

Continued

Willis' attorneys say the case has received too much media attention. The motion is scheduled to be discussed Oct. 19 ahead of the Oct. 25 hearing.

Willis most likely had a cam going when he walked in with her. There is probably a recording of her whole time in the basement. Shocked LE haven't found it yet and if they have we don't know about it

What makes you think she was alive? I think the cousin got suckered into helping with Jess and that Willis used the recording to make sure he doesn't rat, because the cousin helping move her body was probably on video. I think Willis moved Jessica because he thought the cousin may rat, he wanted no one to know where she was.

Jessica's case has always had a lot of media attention, she was just on Disappeared before he got caught. Accept it for what it is. Really hope he gets denied.

I wonder if there is a genuine concern about the media attention and getting a fair trial or if he is worried for his safety in prison when the gravity of what he has done is known by the other prisoners. I'm interested to know if there are cases similar to Jessica's in Michigan that have been successful without the victims remains. From reading the comments by Jessica's family on the Find Jessica Heeringa facebook page they are not convinced Jessica has been murdered by Willis or that she is dead. They said the police have no proof Jessica is dead. I don't blame them for trying to cling on to some hope even though I strongly believe Jessica is deceased. I just hope Willis's attorneys don't use this to their advantage to a jury by saying that even Jessica's own family don't believe what the state is claiming.
